I heard it barking before I even got out of my car. Once I exited my car I saw the dog in the car. I then noticed that the car was on, a/c was blowing and the lights were on.
I don't understand why someone would go into a restaurant to eat with their dog in the car. Now granted, the a/c is on...but can't you just get lunch to go?
I'm glad they left the car running with the a/c on...but it really wouldn't take much to steal their car, would it?

Maybe they went in to pick up lunch take out? I do agree its kinda crazy to leave dog in a car running...I would be worried the dog would knock the car out of park and the car would hit someone/something.

We went to Walmart last night and when we got out of the car...we could hear a dog barking. My daughter and hubby were like go ahead figure out where the dog was. Luckily in a car with someone else with a/c running.

I would never leave my dogs in a car by themselves, ac or not. I just worry that way. While I don't like seeing anyone leave their pet in the car, at least they had the ac on. My worry would be, what if the car died or the ac stopped. Not worth the risk to me. My babies mean to much.

I don't understand the mindset that your dog must go with you, period. I can see it on an occasional basis, or if you're absolutely not going to be leaving your car (like picking up kids from whatever, where you're just waiting in the parking lot for them to come out). Understand that I am a huge dog lover, have 2 of my own (down from 3 after putting down our Golden in May). I have had dogs nearly all my life and can't imagine living without a dog. But there are just some things that I see done with dogs that just make me shake my head in utter confusion.

My concern, what if the car stalls out? Hot car! Were they from out of town?

Ok....I am guilty of doing this just this past weekend. I have a little mini dachshund who jumped into the car with me when I was going to run a couple of errands. None of my errands required me to get out of the car. However while I was out my ds called and asked me to pick him up something at Walgreens. (Hanging my head in shame---) I left my car on and ran in to grab what I needed. If it makes it any better I was nervous the entire time and ran in and ran out. Not something I would choose to do on a regular basis.

I do it. We lost 2 dogs to cancer and old age within a month of each other. That left us with one dog who soils in our house whenever she is left alone at home. If the weather is nice (not hot and humid or raining) we will leave her in the yard. If we are going to be gone for several hours, we drop her at doggy camp that doesn't do hourly care just half day/full day too the time of $15-$25/day. If I have errands to run that don't require me to get out of the car or only for a few minutes, I take her with me so she isn't stuck at camp nor is she being inappropriate at home. If I have to get out of the car, I take my keys with me and remote start my car from the key fob or I can start it from my phone anywhere in the world if need be so she had AC. She has a dog bed in the back and she just sleeps. It is rare but I do it for short bursts of time.

While I don't like to see dogs left in the car in this weather, sometimes it is unavoidable. Before I get flamed for saying it, let me present the following scenario:
I am driving up to the cottage with my kids and my dogs. I can't leave the dogs home because I will be gone for a few days, and they enjoy being at the cottage. If one of my kids has to use the bathroom, what do I do? I can't let the kids go into the rest area alone, and I can't bring the dogs in with me. The only option is to let them wait in the car.
Some dogs like to go in the car. One of mine jumps in while the car is in the garage and I'm bringing in the groceries. In the case the OP presented, at least the a/c was on and perhaps the owner was only picking up a carry out.

At least the AC was on. I've done that once, just to run in and out from somewhere and I've never left my dog in a car at any other time.If I am going to get out of my car where i can't bring the dog inside, I leave him/her home.

Where I live, dogs go everywhere. The restaurant, grocery store, department store, the doctor - you name it. Dogs are more welcome than children! In my opinion, I would prefer the dog left in the car!

Maybe they have an extra set of keys? At least they had the AC on!

I, too, have pretty much always have had dogs but I do not take them places with me. Shy of the vet, park or visiting family/friends which is rare, they just don't come with us. And I'll be honest, it used to aggravate the hell out of me when I used to own a craft store and every so often someone would come shopping with their precious teacup whatnot....why anyone would "presume" their dog is welcome in a business is beyond me. Besides my personal and professional opinion of no dogs in our store, they also unknowingly exposed their dog to Parvo as our business partner had a puppy who was infected and visited the store once to show everyone after hours. The risk was there for awhile. If the only option is leaving them in a car you better bet your ass your ac is running and no harm is coming to your pup but it's summer now, why risk it?

Aren't any of these people worried about their cars getting stolen? Obviously the key is in the ignition so your almost inviting someone to steal it. I live in a relatively crime free town and I read in our local Patch today that 4 cars were stolen in the last 10 days.

I do not know if they were from out of town. I didn't circle the car to look at the tag. I suppose there are times when it's unavoidable and yes, at least the a/c was on...but like someone said...what if the dog bumps the transmission? What if someone steals the car? It hardly seems worth the risk if it can be avoided. (and IMO...stopping at a restaurant isn't necessarily unavoidable)

It hardly seems worth the risk if it can be avoided. (and IMO...stopping at a restaurant isn't necessarily unavoidable) We did this last weekend while driving the 8 hour drive home from picking up dds from the in-laws and we wanted to stop for dinner. Dh doesn't like to eat and drive, and prefers to sit in the restaurant. We started the van with the remote start. No keys in the ignition and the car turns off if you touch the gas or brake. The gear shifter is up pretty high on the dash and you have to push a button to move it from park. We were sitting where we could see the van and the running lights come on with the remote start so when it turned off, we re-started the van. The dog doesn't bark at people walking by and was curled up sleeping when we opened the doors. We took her with us because we spent the night and wanted to avoid kenneling her when we were going somewhere she is welcome. She doesn't go with us around town unless we are going to the vet, dog park, or kennel. She does go with us when we are going to my parents or the in-laws which both are a few hours away. You wouldn't know we are from out of town as we stay in the state.

My DD is a manager at the local supermarket and if they see a car with a dog inside the police are called and the owner is given a warning and the incident is recorded. If the person is caught again with a dog unattended in their car they are issued a summons.
