Learned a lesson. Yearrrs of doing boxed hair color really affects how getting it done professionally turns out! Took lots of tweaking and still didn't take right...frustrating...but my own fault. Won't use it again!

I tried a couple of times to color my hair at home. And it looked like I colored my hair at home! The color just didn't last and my grays and roots never took well. I finally found a salon I like and they've been taking good care of me. Just had my roots touched up and hair chopped off today! I only need a touch up every three months because the color really lasts. Hopefully now with all the work you put into color correcting your hair you won't have any more issues.
I'm a brunette and I noticed blondes have way more issues with coloring than I've ever had. One young girl wanted light blue in her blonde hair in homage to Frozen. She ended up leaving with gray grandma colored hair! But she liked it and really gushed over how it was exactly what she wanted. I saw another girl today getting all over highlights the old school way. The plastic cap with holes and a crochet hook? The guy coloring her hair had a white blonde Mohawk and he was explaining how he had to color his and what products he used to keep it that way. It's a lot of work but when it's done right looks stunning!

I did it at home (with more bad results then good) for 20 years. Mainly because I couldn't afford salon color. But new good job makes for things I can do now! I cut a few inches off this week, added bangs and wanted something different for colir. My hair had a brassy tone to it which I hated! We chose a medium brown then added light blonde streaks. Well....I had light all over! The brown never took! I was so sad! Then she said she'd go in with a much darker brown and do low lights. They took. But it's the opposite of what I pictured. Still much better then it was. Now we know what shade to use! I also need to condition it a lot (deep condition) and said we can do more high/low lights in 6-8, weeks

I'm sitting with foils in my hair now lol. I wouldn't trust myself with a box color. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/OrTI4SBmZ2ZYSFv6ag4f.jpg)

Fingers crossed! Cost is one of those reasons I tried doing it at home, too. Not to mention I couldn't find a decent stylist in Germany. I'm pretty basic on the color, dark brown/black root touch up with haircut is $60 in my neck of the woods.

I didn't color my hair until I could afford a salon because I'm a big chicken. That said, I recently relented on the expensive color shampoo (I bought Redken color magnet or something like that) and I couldn't believe the difference. No color on my towel even though my hair is naturally dark with red highlights (which is what I get done too) I always had color on my towel after I washed. I think I will never go back to drug store "color" protectant shampoos again. The savings comes from not washing out all the professional color with crappy shampoo.

Hair color is something I'll never trust from a box. I did that route as a college/early adult, but nowadays I have lots of gray to cover and leave it to the professionals! Lucky for me I live in a small town and pay small town prices which sure helps a lot.

Weird I have gone back and forth over the years and never had a problem with professional or box. I can't afford professional anymore, so box is it. You can get very high quality box dyes these days.

I began my life as a blonde but my hair naturally darkened as I got older. When grey began to show in my hair, I began to use L'Oreal Excellence at home (the dreaded box haha).
The first time I selected the color, I must have looked at colors in the store for over an hour. I finally settled on one and used it. No one said anything to me about noticing the color was different, so I think I matched the original pretty well. The color lasts 4 weeks--it doesn't fade, it is my roots growing that make it necessary to color again. Perhaps because I am using a blonde, IDK, but there is never color on the towel when I shampoo my hair. My husband does the roots for me each month. Salons charge $65 and up to color hair, and there is no way I could afford that.

I did a box for years and was very happy with it. Now that I'm adding streaks to my hair, I have it done professionally. I just can't make my hairdresser understand that I want her to color the gray. I know gray is tough to color but I really don't want my gray to show. I'm thinking of going back and doing a box for all over and then going back for new streaks

I've used boxed color since I was 23. I started going gray at 17.
When I first started coloring, I went to a soft black. My natural hair color was medium ash brown, but since the grays were getting obvious, I decided if I had to color my hair, I might as well try a different color.
My pale skin combined with the black hair gave me a kind of Snow White look, which was actually pretty comely while I was in my twenties. I got tons of compliments on my hair, which was unusual for my skin tone, but not obviously dyed. Plus, my roots didn't really show glaringly like dark roots on a blonde, it was more like lightplay on my hair. Only the grays were obvious.
When I became pregnant at 32, I stopped coloring my hair because of fear for the baby being exposed to chemicals. So, 9 months of pregnancy + 9 months of nursing, my hair was significantly grown out. I started coloring again, but matching my natural hair color, rather than black. Again, it looked pretty natural until the grays would make themselves known. But that would happen with salon color too.
Took another break with my second pregnancy, but went right back to box color. I'm happy with the results.

I've had good results with box color, but in the last few months have grown out my color, just to see what color my hair really is now. I started going gray at 16, and now at 44 I am more than 75% gray. It's a soft gray and I've had many compliments on it, but I'm not loving it. However, while it is this light, I've decided to get pink tips for the summer, then start going darker later in the year.

I've been doing mine at home most of the time that I've been coloring it. I started going gray early and it gets expensive to salon color. I have had really good results doing it at home and I have very resistant gray. I have found that spending more on home color gets me better results and my hair doesn't get super damaged from it. I've been using the John Freida foam color for the past 4 years or so and love it.

I do my hair with the OMG box coloring too. I'm blonde with more of a white than grey coming in. I actually like it. I used to have it done, and while it was pretty, it was around $225 for a cut and color at the salon I used to go to. That was ok when I was working so much. I could afford it. But I really hated paying it. And I hated driving to Dana Point to get it done every 6 weeks.
My sister was doing a home color, and while I liked that it left variations of color instead of solid blonde, hers was too light for me. I bought the same brand in a bit darker blonde than she had. I love it. I still has streaks of many different colors in it. I think I pay around $8 a box? And my hair is still soft and full and doesn't break off at the ends like it did when I was a teen and using Sun-In too much. Anyone else use Sun-in many years ago? Again, having light hair, it worked on me. My friends with brown hair turned orangeish. It was awful.

I've been using box color for years. A few years ago I splurged and paid to have it done at a salon. While I loved them doing the work, I didn't really notice that big of a difference to justify the cost, so back to the box it was. I use a medium reddish brown color from L'oreal. I also use Wen religiously and never have to re color more than every six months or so.

I've done both. For me, I find that professional color is much more vibrant and covers my gray much better. I also like to have highlights on top of the color, and wouldn't want to do my own highlights at all.
But I did the box color for years when money was tighter. It was totally fine - I just like the results of the professional color better.

I agree merge left (Altho thank the good Lord no grey for me yet!) I never would have done my own high lights. I haven't had professional color in about 12 yrs. Couldn't afford it. While it didn't come out the way I'd hoped it still looks tons better then I've ever gotten it. But she said box color done too much can ruin your hair

I have used L'Oreal Preference for 20+ years and never had any issues. In fact I just did my hair last night. At work on Thursday night I mentioned to my co-worker that I really needed to colour my hair this weekend and she was so surprised. She said she never knew I coloured my own hair. I use a colour very close to my own and it seems to work just fine....at least for me. I just won't dish out that kind of money at the salon. I do however pay for grooming every 8 weeks for both dogs! LOL! I'm sure that speaks volumes about me!

I like the John Frieda foam colour too, and have used it for a few years. Last month I got my hair coloured 'professionally' for the first time ever. My normal hairdresser charges about £70 ($100) which I cannot afford. However, I'm registered with a Caring For Carers project, which has negotiated free treatments with the local college. That's why 'professionally' is in quotation marks; the students are not yet fully qualified. However, they are in their third year, well supervised, and I'm really happy with the colour and texture of my hair. I got it cut there too, and next week I'm going for a facial, and Indian head massage! ![:2thumbsup:](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/zKsqKGInldFvtmx415J3.jpg)

I used box color for years with great results. (L'oreal). I started having it done at the salon when my grey became so resistant, the color just didn't last around my hairline. My salon color was not negatively impacted by previously using box color.
The salon was great for a few years- adding Gray Magic helped. But eventually, the grey popped through as fast as it did with box color. Nothing helped. I figured- if I was having the same issue again, I may as well go back to doing it myself. I'm just as happy with the color now as I was with the salon color.
Recently the Gray Magic stopped doing much at all. I went to Sally Beauty Supply to see if there was something else to try. They manager- who is a stylist- recommended a totally different brand. I was reluctant to switch from L'Oreal- but the one she told me about is specifically for 'aging hair'. It's called Age Beautiful and it's FANTASTIC. It's done a superior job of hiding the grey for a longer period, my hair is shiny and the color is gorgeous. The only thing to be careful about (the manager warned me, and she was right) is that the color takes darker than the samples show in the store. I went with a shade lighter than what I wanted- and it's perfect.
