Has anyone gotten one of these letters? My Dad received one addressed to him only and Im trying to figure if its a scam. It says they need more info to process his return and to go to idverify.irs.gov to verify his identity. My Mom and him file jointly and they have NOT filed yet this year. So Im guessing he is a attempted identity theft victim. Mom will call the IRS in the morning. But just seeing if the Peas had sny experience with this.

I know the IRS will always write and not call. however, I wouldn't go to that website if I wasn't sure if it the letter was legit. I would go directly to the irs.gov site and go from there. calling them first would be even better.

I did find the idverify website listed on the IRS site. Although that is actually bad news since it looks like he is a identity theft victim. ?

I hate when people take advantage or steal from others who are truly hard working people. I hope the situation is corrected soon with little agrivation.

Some asshole used dh's info to file their taxes. I discovered it when I tried to e-file thru turbo tax. Dh called the IRS and the guy on the phone pulled up the other return and was able to stop any money from being sent. He told dh that after we paper filed our taxes along with the identity theft form and proof of identity, we wouldn't hear anything for 6-8 weeks, and would get our refund in about six months. I mailed the return with all the info on March 2, and we had our refund 3 weeks later. We will have to use a special PIN for the next few years when we e-file, but all in all it was less painless than Expected. Make sure they place a fraud alert with one of the credit bureaus- you do it with one, and they notify the other two.

Yes that is what it is - we got one too, and I called my tax preparer (we haven't filed yet this year). She said to call the # on the letter, which I did, and got a very friendly & helpful IRS agent. He gave me a case # and our preparer will send our real return directly to the IRS with a PIN#.

Do follow up on the identity fraud reporting. And get copies of all the credit reporting agencies' reports. This happened to some friends' youngest child (at the time age 8), since the child's SSAN was on the parents' return, that "flagged" the IRS.
It isn't just adults that are targeted.

Sorry to hear that happened. What is the best way to prevent this?

Sorry to hear that happened. What is the best way to prevent this? Don't use a credit card at Home Depot. Dh has one credit card that he rarely uses. After that security breach, his credit card was used fraudulently and this happened.

Placing the fraud alert entitles you to one additional free copy from each reporting bureau. We are spacing them out over the next year. The initial fraud alert is for 90 days, but we will renew it at least once. Another thing that happened is that after my dh placed the fraud alert, he received letter from a supposed credit protection company saying he had tried to sign up with them online, and needed more info. When he called them, the first thing they wanted was his San. He declined to provide it and asked them how they got his information since he had never been to their website. They declined to answer and he had to get a supervisor involved to get them to remove him from their system. I googled and apparently it is a real company, but he did not sign up for it, and they came across as shady.

We're they part of blue cross blue shield at any point? That's how my husbands SS# was obtained. He was a member about 3 years ago.

We just ran into this over the weekend when we tried to e-file. Now we can't even get through to the IRS on the phone. So I'm just going to do what you all were told to do and hope for the best. Guess this is what happens when you wait until 4/11 to file...
If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm open!

Guess this is what happens when you wait until 4/11 to file... If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm open! I think I covered it all above, but: 1. Call the IRS (this isn't a huge deal, you can proceed without doing so, they just gave us additional helpful information) 2. Go to the IRS website and print the identity theft affidavit. Fill it out 3. Copy the DL and SS card of the person whose identity was stolen - the affidavit only asks for one, we provided both 4. Mail your paper return along with the above - don't forget to sign the return! Apparently that is a common error now that we mostly file online. 5. For my state return, I sent a paper return with the same paperwork with a note explaining that I didn't know if my state had also been compromised (with Turbo Tax, you can't efile your state if you couldn't efile your federal). 6. Prepare to wait. We were told not to expect to hear anything for 6-8 weeks, and that it could take up to 6 months to get our refund. This didn't turn out to be the case. 7. Place a fraud alert with one of the credit reporting agencies - you only have to do one, they will notify the other 2. The alert lasts for 3 months, can be renewed, and gets you an additional free copy of your credit report. Good luck!
