Just a reminder that the IRS does NOT contact you by phone unless you ignore their letters. Today we got a phishing scam call that was a recorded message claiming that it was our final notice that the IRS is supposedly bringing a lawsuit against us. The only letter we have received from the IRS recently wasn't anything like that.
These types of scams are very common near tax time. If you go to irs.gov, you can find info about such scams and how to deal with them. For starters, if you answer the phone and a live person claims to be from the IRS, ask them for their badge number and name. Then call the number at the irs.gov website, and ONLY the number on the IRS official website.
The IRS doesn't do robo calls. That was my first clue. Second was they did not ask for anyone by name, and the third was that we have received no letters from the IRS claiming we owe them any money, just one saying that they had adjusted our return slightly. Fourth, the recorded message said Internal Revenue Services, not Internal Revenue Service. The official name is singular, not plural. The gal in the recording had excellent English, but there were a couple of slightly odd little incongruencies that I noticed, but only when I listened to the message left on my voice mail multiple times and transcribed it for submitting their phishing scam to the real IRS.
I just got the call today and reported it promptly, complete with the phone number that I was supposed to call with my questions (and social security number, presumably), so I hope the IRS nails them to the wall.

I wasn't thinking one day and answered the house phone (we usually screen calls) and it was an "officer of the IRS" who said we were in "big trouble" with them and that we were going to be visited by an agent if we didn't cooperate. I laughed out loud, asked who they were calling for, and they couldn't give me a name. I said, since you can't give me a name, I'm certainly not going to give you any of my personal information. I then asked the lady what phone number she just called and she couldn't tell me that either. I just hung up on them.
I also like the ones that call saying they're from "Windows Support" and my computer is sending out viruses. I usually play along with them and make it difficult for them as I have a Mac and everything they tell me won't work (I do tech support for my job) because I figure it keeps them from trying to hijack someone else's computer.

My mom got the virus call and said, "I don't have a computer." They got all flustered and hung up! Hahaha!
When I got the live IRS call I went all Liam Neeson in Taken on them and told them I knew they were scammers and I had ways of finding them and to watch out because the FBI would be at their door shortly. They hung up.

The police are growing old waiting down the street to arrest me. Really, I should bring them some water and a snack. They've been out there for weeks.

I got this call yesterday. I think I did. I really couldn't hear the guy very well and he had a thick accent. I did catch the word "prosecution" and exclaimed, "I know this scam!" before I hung up the phone.
I got the same call last year, but they didn't say they were with the IRS. It was really vague and the guy gave me a number to call back. That's when I learned about this kind of scam.
