My DD is a junior in high school at a school that specializes in Math and Science, but for the next two weeks one of its history courses gets to take the spotlight. The class is actually American History from Reconstruction through the 20th century, but it is nicknamed Tales from the Crypt. Each year, during the second week of classes in August, the class goes to the local historical cemetery and chooses the name of someone buried there. Then throughout the first two semesters they work on researching that person in the archives at the local library. This is all done on their own time and they are required to visit the library at least once a week. In December, they had to turn in a research paper based on this person. In January they had to write a monologue based on their research and audition for the tour. Performers were chosen and since then they have been honing their performances, including meeting one a week after study hours, to practice. Next week is the actual cemetery tours. They are held at night and the public can take the tour by candlelight and see the performances of these students. It coincides with the annual pilgrimage. I can't wait to go down and see DD's performance. I have heard it countless times but haven't seen it with costume, etc. This is the 25th Anniversary for this Tales from the Crypt class and over the years it has won numerous awards, including one from the History Channel. This past week DD was interviewed and recorded by NPR, so it will be featured there as well. I'm so proud of DD. I guess it is things like that which make her being away from home for school worth it. Tales From The Crypt

That is awesome. I would have loved to have an assignment like that when I was in Junior high. or even high school.

I am pretty geeked out that there are assignments like this in history classes-I have a history degree, and more often than not I have people look at me like I am crazy for liking history. They complain that it is boring. But it isn't, not at all-it just takes someone or something to get kids excited and assignments like this go a long way to help give old news life again.

That is really neat! And fun that the story made its way to a news outlet!
