I seem to be choosing real stinkers at the moment, I'm getting a few pages in putting them down and not picking them back up. I've done it with at least five books in the last week!!

I have quite a list of favorite authors and I read all of their books, so I rarely end up with any stinkers. (The last time I had to put a book down after only a chapter or 2 was when I attempted my first - and last - Janet Evanovich book.)
I enjoy all of the books I read, but the last one that really gripped me, and I could not put it down, was This Charming Man by Marian Keyes. I read it over a long weekend and totally neglected my children for those 3 days.
ETA: A Child Called It was the other one that held me captive for days.

The last one I really enjoyed was The Girl On the Train by Paula Hawkins ... the main character is a complete mess which makes the story even more interesting

I've read a few good books lately. I just finished The Girl On the Train by Paula Hawkins. It's a bit like Gone Girl.
I've also read the Call the Midwife trilogy. I really liked those! Jennifer Worth is the author.
Boston Girl by Anita Diamont was good. It reminded me of Angela's Ashes, which I also read recently.
Im reading Sophoe's Choice now. It's very good!

I haven't read nearly as many good books this year. The ones that I have enjoyed are: Sarah's Key an older book, but oh so wonderful The Story Hour by Umrigar Thrity - very nicely done Summer House with a Swimming Pool by Koch A couple from last year: The Invention of WingsAll the Light We Cannot SeeWe Are Called to Rise by Laura McBride - just lovely and full of hope despite a slightly rushed ending. Each of these is very very different from the others - mysteries, historical fiction, literary and contemporary fiction. Hope you find something that you like! Lisa

Wild by Cheryl Strayed; and The Aviator's Wife (about Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh)

AussieMeg, I LOVE Marian Keyes, is this a new one? I thought I had read all of hers. (My favorite - maybe because it was the first one I read - was "Anybody Out There?")

I just finished Not My Father's Son by Alan Cumming in two sittings. Girl on the Train was good - much better than Gone Girl in my opinion I have high hopes for One Step Too Far by Tina Seskis
I am hating The Invention of Wings so much I have to force myself to read a set number of pages per day. But it is the choice for both my book groups this month so I feel obligated to finish.

Same here! Our book club picked that one recently. Based on the subject matter, and the fact that I've liked the author's other book, I thought this was a sure winner. But I could not have cared less about anything that happened. I did finish it, and I wish I could tell you it gets better, but for me it never did.

I just finished Can you Keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella.
I read it in one day and almost one sitting. I really enjoyed it and thought it was very funny.

Another pea recommended A House In The Sky and I am so glad that she did. This is about a journalist who is kidnapped and held hostage for 15 months in the middle east. This was a very moving story.

I've read it over and over! I would say ' The House in the Sky'. I read it last fall and still think about it often. I recommended the book to you grace2882 and glad you liked it.

I have done the same thing! Can't get into a book. I finally started reading Everything I Never Told You and it took a month to read it.

My recent favorite were Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult and Invisible by James Patterson and David Ellis (if you like thriller-type stuff). I also really enjoyed Still Alice.

I just finished Five Days at Memorial. It's incredibly compelling and infuriating. I'd highly recommend it.

No, it was released several years ago. It is my favorite of all her books (and I love them all!). ETA: I just googled - it was actually released in 2008!

Unbroken A Game of Thrones, once I figured out all the characters.I'm on the third book, and it's losing me. I've started The Boys in the Boat, but my attention span is questionable right now, so I haven't picked it back up- I might read that one tomorrow morning.

I don't know why there are so many comments out there about The Girl On The Train being like Gone Girl. They are both thrillers with an unreliable narrator but for me, that's really all they share. I loved The Girl On The Train. Another one I really enjoyed recently was The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street.

Sorry, I should have said it up there. . I absolutely loved this book. There are two story lines interwoven. I much preferred the story line from the 20s and 30s. The intensity of that story line got so bad that I actually had to read ahead to find out what happened to those characters! I haven't done that in years with a book.

A couple weeks ago I read The Chocolate Money in a few hours, then the next day I read Gone Girl. I couldn't put either of them down, and luckily I was on vacation at home, so I could just read. And now, I'm reading Dark Places, and I would love to just sit and read it too! It's really got my attention. I just haven't had the time like a couple weeks back.
I noticed that my mom has a copy of the Girl on the Train, so I may borrow it, since it's apparently so good!

I haven't liked anything that I have tried to read recently so I haven't read much at all.
