I'm making it now, but I'm not sure about the cut of pork I picked. It had a bone and was pork shoulder.. I was bummed as the original piece I picked, while during check out, the checker said, 'do you still want this as the end of it is opened"... NOOO!! Advice??
UPDATE- So the meat was definitely tender and bone pulled right out, but there was something wrong with the meat. It must have been spoiled. It did not smell good the entire time cooking. I added some of the BBQ sauce, after draining the juices, thinking that would revive it. Still smelled funky. Will try again another day, but my stomach is queasy just thinking about it. I tasted it, hope I don't get sick.

I've made it but not with the bone in. It's a nice, easy way to make BBQ-style pork. Be sure to pour off the excess liquid before adding the BBQ sauce. You can always pour a little back in afterwards if need be. Don't worry about the bone, though. I've made a different recipe with that bone-in pork shoulder. When it's all done cooking, just give the bone a yank and it slides right out. Very cool. Then you can shred the meat with no bone in the way.

pork shoulder is the best part from all I've been reading and the bone just makes it better!

bone in should give it a richer meatier flavor. Won't be a problem at all

I came in to see about the root beer. You really add that to pork?

That's the perfect cut. The bone gives it more flavor and will help keep the meat juicy.

I came in to see about the root beer. You really add that to pork? Yes, you put the pork roast in a crock pot, add one can of root beer. Let it cook for 10-12 hours. Drain the liquid, shred the meat with forks and add BBQ sauce. I've only made it with a pork butt roast, but all pork roasts are pretty fatty, so I imagine that will be delicious.

Yep, bone in should be fine. This recipe works with a can of root beer, dr. pepper or coke / pepsi. I have to substitute sometimes when I'm out of root beer!

I've used both. I always trim the fat, rub it with spices, pour rootbeer over the pork and cook it in a Dutch oven. I prefer cooking it in the oven instead of the crockpot because it gives it more of a roasted flavor.
Cooking in the oven also concentrates and reduces the liquid. When the pork is done I remove the pork from the pan and remove the bone and any excess fat from the meat. I then shred the pork. before returning the shredded pork to the pan, I skim off the excess fat from the liquid. After placing the shredded pork back in the Dutch oven, then I add our favorite barbecue sauce and continue cooking for about another hour.
It's our favorite way to eat pulled pork.

I always use pork shoulder with the bone. Root beer, Dr Pepper and Coke have all been used. My mom even used an orange soda once on a whim. All were good, and the brown sodas weren't different enough in flavor to fret about. I used to shop for all sugar, mexican sodas, but realized now I use whatever I have on hand.

I typically use a bone in pork butt for carnitas. Next time you do it, throw in some orange juice with your root beer.

My husband is a chef. Whenever he makes pulled pork he always uses a bone in pork shoulder. I have to say, though, he's never used root beer, or Dr. Pepper, or a crockpot!

I roasted a bone-in pork shoulder Sunday. It was the most moist pork roast ever, and very tasty. I've used Coke on pulled pork.

Like others, I've used root beer or Coke. Either way I have to go to the store to get soda as we don't typically drink it. I have also done it in both the crockpot and the dutch oven.
I stopped adding BBQ sauce and we eat the shredded pork as is in tortillas or we poor BBQ sauce on individually since dd doesn't like BBQ sauce.

Hmmm, I think I'll try that with Cream Soda or Pepsi.

BUMMER on your update. Please do give it another chance sometime. It should smell great and taste delicious. (You didn't use diet soda by any chance, did you?)
