I clench my teeth at night and snore. My dentist has recommended using a mouth guard. Should I have a custom one made by dentist or try cheap ones? How do you clean them? Do they help with snoring? TIA

I have one that was made for me ... I would recommend going that route I wake up with fewer headaches so it must be working ... I only snore if I sleep on my back, which I never do, so I can't tell you if it helps with that ...

My DD had the expensive custom fitted one until my dog chewed it up. She then just picked one up at the drug store and used that. She said they both worked equally as well.

Have one made by the dentist. Mine seriously changed my life. Worth every penny. When you get up in the morning, rinse it under warm water, and before you put it in at night, brush it with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

What Marianne/littlemama said.
I have a drugstore one for travel (I went on a trip and forgot my custom one once, so I picked up a "Doctor's Night Guard" which now lives in my travel bag). It's okay, but not great - it's quite thick, whereas the one from my dentist is thinner and doesn't distort my face. LOL
Also, the one from the dentist is hard, not pliable. It actually functions a bit like a retainer as well - my orthodontically improved teeth want to shift, even 30+ years later! I can feel the difference after a week of travel.
Since I have actually chewed through one of the hard plastic custom ones, I know it's saved my teeth from damage over the years.

I had one made by my dentist 2 years ago. I hate that thing! It's large and made of soft plastic. I can't close my mouth all the way around it, it's so big. That's the part that bothers me the most. It also seems to trap saliva and I wind up feeling like I'm choking all the time when it's in. I would always wake up in the middle of the night and yank it out. I wore it off and on for about 8 months and finally gave up. My dentist said I would feel differently too and I never did. But I never had jaw aches or anything from clenching my teeth like she said I should anyway.

Yes a million times over! It has changed my life. The soft platic over the counter ones I clenched through. I was getting micro fractures in my teeth, snored, and had daily headaches... Now I no longer snore, though am told I "purr" ?. My headaches are much better controlled, and I sleep so much better! It is expensive.... My dog has gotten ahold of mine twice and I've had to replace it both times, but it's worth every single penny. I can't live without it.

Plus! It's thin and only fits on my front 4 teeth. Give it a week and you'll be sold!

Mine was made specifically for me by my orthodontist... I clench my jaw and grind my teeth at times, and it is extremely helpful. I don't use it all the time, but if I'm under a lot of stress from work, or whatever, I use it and it helps me avoid waking up with a headache from clenching my jaw all night long.
I would recommend having one made by a dentist so it's comfortable for you. It may take a bit of getting used to-- I gag pretty easy, so for me, I have to consciously make myself relax and breathe through my nose when I first put it in.
ETA: the one made by my orthodontist (back in Illinois) was really thin plastic, formed exactly like my teeth, and was really comfortable. I had to have another one made after getting a crown, and while I thought it would be the same kind, it ended up being like the one tinaev mentioned-- thick, clunky plastic, and I do NOT like it.

Definitely the custom one! I am a terrible clencher and grinder. I have cracked teeth and broken fillings. They are more expensive, but they last. They have one that is specifically geared towards helping with the snoring.
Good luck!

I started out with the cheap version from the store. I bit through it in 2 weeks. It was going to cost quite a sum replacing a mouthguard every 2 weeks.
My personalized one took a few days to get used to the feel of the hard plastic. It is much slimmer than the cheaper one. That makes it much easier to sleep. I would go with the personalized one if you grind severely like I do.

I had one made by my dentist and it fits over my two front teeth. It is much nicer than the huge soft plastic ones that fit on your bottom teeth. The over the counter one that I bought was a joke.

I've worn a night guard for 40 years now and I can't sleep without it. About every 5-10 years I get a new one and they're always a different style. I just got a new one made by my periodontist and it goes on my bottom teeth instead of my top teeth. Whatever.
I would absolutely go with one custom-fitted to your mouth. Your long-term oral health will thank you.

I have one called an NTI, custom made by the dentist bit goes over my top two front teeth. I've used it for about ten years. I wouldn't have any teeth left without it. I'm a major grinder.

My DH has one for teeth grinding. It stops him getting headaches. It's custom-made and he wears it quite happily. It DOES NOT stop snoring, though!

I have had one for almost 20 years, from the dentist. Well I have had 2 or 3 in that time period since I end up chewing through them! Helps a LOT and has saved my teeth a lot!

I thought I had an ear infection (for months) turns out to be a jar issue, I was grinding at night. I got one made by my dentist for $350 and he told me that was better than the ones from the drugstore, I forgot the explanation but it made sense, not like he was trying to upsale me but that those weren't good in the long run.
