FurryP, completely forgot to say check to see if you have any local Facebook yard/garage sale groups. I've sold more than I have bought. I like posting ISO (in search of) posts. I've found clothes for my son that way. Depending on the group, the ISO posts cannot be posted because some use them a lot to try and get free things (I've always paid for what I wanted).

So what is the secret to successful thrifting? You peas obviously have it down pat. I only find junk and over-priced junk. I seriously try to think outside the box when I look, to see if I can at least re-purpose stuff, but I find nothing like what you all find. I keep thinking the best stuff would be in older, long established neighborhoods. Like where people have lived in their homes for 15-2 years. But then I think about competing with the garage sale vultures that show up befoe the stuff is even out. I think it helps to go early and know what things are worth. Until I came on 2peas, I had no idea vintage pyrex was collectible. I saw so many of the white with wheat patterns at yard sales. Of course, now I don't see them anywhere! I also like to sleep in on Saturdays. So, I usually don't find great deals. It's just something to do. It's kind of fun peeking into other people's lives. I rarely find anything great at thrift stores. They are not good in my area. You have to enjoy the hunt. And you also need to realize that most times you will find nothing at all! I have a few things on my list and I stop frequently at thrift stores to see if there are any in the store at that time. Most of the time there is not but occasionally I score and when I score I am very very happy! i'm always looking for scrapping and rubberstamping stuff. But most of the stuff like fine is old and out of date. And so I leave it behind. I dream someday I will happen upon the mother load of stampScape stamps! I also look for Crystal that was made back in maybe the 90s by Avon. It has flowers and a hummingbird that's on it. Most places that I have found have cost me less than a dollar. I look for tassels... My younger sister is brain-damaged and will play with a tassel for hours on end. But it's got to be the right color length and kind of silky so that it will sway and shimmer a bit. A good coach purse buy is always fun.

I don't like going into thrift stores but I will stop at a yard sale in my neighborhood if it looks good. i also like the swap meet at a local junior college. that's always fun for a Saturday morning stroll before the clouds break and the sun gets too hot.

Coilstrand, good for your ds for being thrifty and funding his hobbies and interests.
FurryP, older neighbourhoods tend to be better for vintage items, glassware and furniture, I find. Newer neighbourhoods tend to be better for more up to date decor items and children's items. I think a lot of being successful is just luck. It also depends on what you are looking for, if it is something specific.
I find that when I am looking for something specific, I sometimes overlook something else. Your eyes scan looking for particular things and seem to skip over everything else. A few times I have had dh point out something that I missed in my zeal to find something I was looking for.
It's good to look through things as well, and don't assume that a box that seems to have mostly one type of thing (purses, kitchen wares, etc.) won't have something completely different buried in it. People often pass those boxes by because they aren't looking for a purse or plates, and they don't see the cool retro alarm clock, etc. further down.
You also have to enjoy it. I am an early riser and prowling garage sales is one of my favourite things to do, it always gives me a rush. It does help the more sales you are able to hit, and you can visit a lot of sales in one morning. Street sales and community wide sales are great because it's all in one area. I always manage to find something every time I go yard saling or to the thrift store. But I buy a wide variety of things, there is not much that I buy retail, so it's more likely I'd find something than someone who is only looking for vintage clothing for example.
