Until this thread, I have never even considered that someone could think beans are a vegetable. I would consider them a starch.

I always consider legumes to be their own little category.
For us, they are often used as a source of protein, and I do not count them as a vegetable in our meal.

Yes i consider beans a vegetable. Which is kindof strange because I'm also a vegetarian so they are usually also my source of protein.
To be honest, I've never compartmentalized meals, so i wouldn't think "this is my source of vegetables for the night"... so i guess i would use a more literal interpretation, and since they are technically a vegetable, that is what i would consider them regardless of the rest of the meal.

(eating black beans and yellow rice left overs again for lunch today. Protein, veggie, starch, whatever. It is my favorite lazy mom meal of all time. )

I'll leave the vegetable/not vegetable debate to the rest of you, but I just want to say that I love this commercial. I love the sounds the kids are making as they're eating.

Nope. Then again, I also don't consider frozen peas and corn a "real" vegetable. Yes, I know they are, but to me a vegetable is something fresh that I have to prep and cook

No, absolutely not. I'd consider baked beans gross And beans in general, I consider a starchy protein, not a vegetable. ETA: The USDA considers them both a protein and a vegetable. I could never imagine serving legumes in place of a vegetable. As an additional side, yes, but not without other vegetables also part of the meal. I thought the same thing, but I would serve peas as the vegetable...so, I guess I don't know.

I consider them a solid becoming a gas. Not a vegetable or a carb.

I don't know nor do I especially care what the government classifies them as.
When I plan my menu - baked beans are a carbohydrate choice and strictly limited - as are other carb choices like potatoes, corn, English peas, rice, pasta, grains...
When I'm considering vegetables for the day, I would never 'count' dried beans of any sort - green beans/runner beans/pea pods, those I would count

I guess they are technically a vegetable, but I personally do not consider them a vegetable when I am meal planning.
ETA....That commercial drives me crazy!

No. I consider them to be a pile of crap. They don't register as food to me. They are pretty much the most disgusting food ever.

First, baked beans from a can (i.e. Bush's Baked Beans) are gross and have so much bad crap in them to consider them healthy.
Coming from my perspective as a vegan, beans (black beans, cannellini, garbanzo, kidney beans, etc) are a big part of my diet for the sake of protein and carbohydrates. I can easily make meals focusing on beans, which are healthy and delicious. I try to soak and cook my own beans (dry) when possible, but will use canned beans occasionally. I never eat the baked beans through because of the sugar and often times animal fat that are added to them.

Technically a vegetable but we treat it as a starch.
And corn is technically a grain, but it gets viewed as a vegetable. Our kids love corn but I don't like to serve it because I feel like it's starch overload, and better for our auto-immune son if he doesn't get it.

If I were determined to have a serving of vegetables on the plate, I wouldn't count baked beans as such. I do enjoy them, though.
What do I know about nutrition, though. I just polished off three Cotton Candy Oreos.

Not in my house, but I don't serve corn as a "vegetable," either. (Actually, I think corn is a grain. And I don't understand why anyone lets it pose as a vegetable. LOL) I was just thinking about the fact that I'm so proud of myself for not serving corn (or baked beans) as a vegetable ... but ya know, I do serve peas occasionally. Which is about equal to serving baked beans. Just because we love them. And they're green. ETA and now I see that others have said the same thing. Peas = beans. Bad lucyg!

Poor peas, the much maligned vegetable. The make casseroles so pretty.
