We are redoing the flooring in our living room this summer. We have old, ugly builder's carpet. We've thought about doing hardwood, but I'm worried about nicks and scratches. We have two kids, two puppies, and two slightly careless adults in the house! The ceramic tiles that look like wood might be a good fit for us. Anyone have them in their home?

Yes. We had the put in almost 2 years ago. With the layout of our house, wood was not practical for all the rooms we had to put it in. It runs from our entry, great room, kitchen, hallways, bathroom and laundry room. About 1700 square feet. We have a dark color so I probably complain about the same things people with dark wood complain about, but we are happy with our choice
. I'll take a picture in a bit and post it.
We searched by several stores before finding one we liked, some looked really cheap to me.

We looked long and hard at wood grain ceramics for an addition we did on our home to accommodate my son who uses a wheelchair and other heavy equipment. I do like them, but in the end we went with a commercial grade textured vinyl that looks so much like wood that we have literal arguments with people who are convinced that it can't be just old vinyl. I love the low maintenance and no concerns over spills, pets, dripping from the hot tub, etc.
One of the things that swayed my choice was having to maintain grout with the tile. The materials cost was only slightly less for the high end vinyl, but the cost of installation was considerably lower.
And just reread your post to note that you're doing your living room. Hmm. Not sure I would ever do vinyl on a living room floor. Have you considered doing an engineered wood with a lot of built in, rustic texture so that any future dings and scratches won't show up?

The space between each tile is much smaller than the grout space that we had removed. The color of the grout is near the same color as the tile, so grout maintenance had been a non-issue.

On the flip side, I have hardwood in an old house. I have had dogs, cats, kids, and careless adults. You do get scratches over time, but it has been 20 since the last time they were refinished and there is only one spot that really could use some work. They are a lot more sturdy and forgiving than people think they are.
I should probably add that I am not the best at being nice to them either-I don't care about shoes (well, maybe soccer cleats) or toys (except that time I stopped the boys from skateboarding in the house) and tend to not be really all that anal about the floors.
So maybe don't completely rule it out...?

I watch a gal on YouTube who just got this type of flooring. This video of hers tells all about it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jDXdICHr9o
(If my link doesn't work, her channel is Lynette/La Beauty Bag and her recent video is: "Wood Look Tile- Everything You Want to Know").

I hate tile. The coldness, both in terms of actual temp and homey feeling, the grout, etc just no no no. I would do a higher quality vinyl that looks like wood planks before I did time ever again.

So maybe don't completely rule it out...? I'll agree with this. We have lived in a 1958 house with original hardwoods for the past 24 years. There has always been a dog and cat, sometimes 2 of each. DD is rough as heck and we have never babied the floors. We also wear shoes in the house and don't ask others to remove theirs. The floors were refinished after 9 years in the house, then again 2 years ago (only because we remodeled, removed walls and extended the oak into the new kitchen so they had to be refinished to match). They look fine. The true hardwood floors are going to hold up much better than most people expect. They are also a better long term investment than the engineered wood floors because they can be refinished. If you want to protect the heavy traffic areas, then you just put down rugs/runners. We have a gorgeous runner in the kitchen that is indoor/outdoor, but you'd never know. Holds up well to pets and super easy to clean. I've been in homes with the tile that looks like wood. They look nice, but there is no mistaking they are tile. Tile is harder on your feet/back and not forgiving when things are dropped on it. The engineered wood is an alternative, but I don't care for the way it sounds when you walk on it. It is in the downstairs on my mother's home and I'm not a fan of it. It also hasn't held up as well long term to pets/careless adults as well as my oak floors have. The problem is that old hardwood does not even compare to the poor quality of today's hardwood.

I have been eyeballing that wood look tile though and thinking about it for the bathroom that we are remodeling. I think it looks fantastic. Go for it.

I agree with the others that say look into real hardwood. In our old house we put in engineered hardwood. The house was on a slab and we were told not to get real hardwood. I liked it, but it was soft and scratched easily. We wear our shoes in the house and we had dogs who liked to chase toys thru the hallway.
In our current house the hardwood is original from 1960. This stuff is tough. We had it sanded when we moved in, only because the previous owner white washed them. Yeah, WTH? Anyway they are a beautiful warm white oak. The only area that is a problem is where someone wore and rolled their spurs on it, other than that they still look great.

We live in an area that is warm to hot most of the year so having cold floors is an asset to us.

Really pretty finaledition! I'm not worried about them being cold since it's mostly warm here. We would have a large area rug in the living room too. You all have given me a lot to think about!

We have the tile in our full bath on the main floor. I love it! But it is such a small area and not high traffic. I really miss hard wood floors. We have to redo the floors on our main level (besides the bathroom) and I'd love hardwood but dh refuses since our St. Bernard would scratch the heck out of them.

I put new french oak floors in a house and I have to say as they aged they looked more and more beautiful.
I would not let nicks and scratches put you off.
That said i had a friend who put bamboo looking tile in her house it looked fabulous!

We have tile that looks like barn wood planks in our powder room. It looks so real that you have to touch it to believe it isn't real wood.

We put it in our bathroom two years ago, and then did our hall and kitchen last year after a water line leak damaged our hardwood. We love it! Here's a couple of photos during installation, after grout, and then with some of the cabinetry installed... http://instagr.am/p/qQxHCNyTJJ http://instagr.am/p/qVyJO2yTIx http://instagr.am/p/q8fV6mSTO- We matched it to what we already had in the bathroom (6"x24") but they've come out with some that are longer lengths. There are some really cool options, and lots of different looks!

We are home shopping right now and one of my favorites has tile that looks like light colored wood in all the bathrooms. It's gorgeous.

No we have real hard wood but it is a real light color wood. It's in our dining room and kitchen. It doesn't look too bad for being 12 years old. I wish we had it throughout the whole house. I hate carpet.
I really do like ceramic tile. We have tile in our entry way. I wish they would have put the hard wood there as well. I am not liking the tile all that much. really doesn't go with the rest of the house.

This is such great information, thank you all for sharing! On the tile that looks like wood option, would it be good for an office? I have a rolling chair that I sit in and I worry that the wheels would get stuck in the grout? It looks like in the picture that was shared that the grout lines are really small, so maybe not. I'm considering this option for my entry, study/office, and kitchen. I like carpet too much to do the tile all over...I need something soft that I can walk on, lol!

Can always get a clear mat or throw rug for under the chair. Believe me, the rolling chair without either could be dangerous, especially if you are not holding on to it as you sit down.

We put it in the bathroom the kids use but I wouldn't want it throughout the house. We have wood in the remainder of the house or are currently adding it. The wood in the kitchen was here when we bought it. They didn't use top quality. Previous owner loved stilettos because the dings are everywhere.

We have both real hardwood and then the wood looking tile. We love them both.
The tile is in our boys bathroom and then also in my closet, laundry and in my husbands office. We like it. Easy to clean, no worries. My husbands office chair has no issues with the grout lines.
The rest of the floors in my home is real hardwood, but is hand scraped. You can't tell when it is scratched because of the hand scrapes. We love, love, love the wood.
The two different floors are almost exact matches (except one is real and one is not!).

We area actually going to the tile shop this week to start looking for wood ceramic tile to replace the wood/carpet in our entryway, dining room, living room, and laundry room. We currently have wood floors in our entry and living rooms, but it has been destroyed by our dogs. I know several people here have said that wear adds charm to the floor, but not ours! We have 2 huge 75+ lb dogs who don't walk slowly in the house and our floors show it. Granted, it's builder grade wood, so it's horribly cheap and we can't sand it down and restain it because the wood in very thin. For us, tile is just more practical. I don't want to risk spending $15k + to get nice quality wood and the dogs go and destroy that as well! Many people down here in South Texas have tile throughout the house because of the heat and humidity.

We have them in our master bathroom and I love it! It's been about two years and just about everyday I think to myself how much I love these tiles! We have very small grout lines and the grout is almost the same color as the tile. Easy to clean and maintain!
