I shared on a "say it here" thread that a few weeks before prom, the boy my DD had been seeing decided to break it off, but offered to go to prom with her as friends "since she already had a dress". My DD was so happy that I told her that since she was going to have to pay for her ticket and dinner anyway, she might as well just go with some of the girls who didn't have dates instead of being with someone who didn't really want to be there with her. A few days later she found out she had been nominated for Prom Princess. What a hoot since my DD is so not a true girly girl. To say she "already had a dress" was a bit misleading though. She fell in love with a dress, but not the $350 price tag, so she asked me if I could make her a dress. I said yes, I could do it and we looked for patterns, but we also looked in consignment shops to see if she could find any ready-made dresses. She found one in the color she liked--all I had to do was the alterations. HA! It wasn't an entire "Pretty in Pink" makeover, but I took the dress from a long, straight, strapless gown and made it into a short (tea length on my petite girl), pouffy dress with lacy straps. At her school, juniors traditionally wear short gowns, seniors wear long. I had enough material after shortening the skirt to make her a matching bag to hold her phone, lipstick and money. Since this is a boarding school, DD was not home for me to keep trying it on, so over Easter break I did the best fitting I could and then finished the dress with my fingers crossed that it wouldn't need too many adjustments the day of prom. DH and I went down on Saturday morning and I was able to try it on her and just had to re-sew the straps to make it fit. Yes, I carried my sewing machine and a box of sewing supplies with me. Not all of the parents came down for the prom, so I got to help several of the girls in the dorm get ready, make repairs, etc. And since DD didn't have a date I bought a dozen roses and made corsages for her and the other girls she went with. They were so excited to have flowers! I even had some left over and quickly made another corsage and boutonniere for a couple that didn't have flowers. DD didn't get prom princess, but had a wonderful time with her friends and made great memories with those who are heading off to college next year. And, because I know the rules, I am sharing a few pictures. Thanks for reading this far and indulging this proud mama. Dress before: Dress after: My Sweet Girl

That dress is beautiful and so is your daughter. Beautiful and smart! So smart of you to take enough flowers to share - sounds like you were the fairy godmother for quite a few Prom night.

Your daughter is a beauty! She's rocking that dress! She goes to a school for math and science? Beauty PLUS brains!
I'm impressed that you did the alterations yourself. I've done quite a bit of sewing and I would have been intimidated by the beading on the skirt. You didn't just simply shorten then hem, you had to take the dress apart and shorten the skirt from where it attached to the bodice. I looks great!

Thank you for all of the kind words about DD (and my sewing abilities)! I am so proud of my girl and all of her accomplishments. Yes, she goes to a boarding school for kids who excel in Math and Science. It is for kids just from this state, and getting in is like applying to college: in addition to the application, they have to write 3 essays, take the ACT, and do a project of their choosing that relates to math & science. Then the applications are judged and they have to have a face to face panel interview. To even apply they have to have an A average in all of their math & science classes, almost all have overall A averages. Students apply during their sophomore year and if they don't make it, they can't reapply. They only accept kids as juniors and they have to be asked back for their senior year--most are, unless there are any discipline or academic problems. I like the fact that there is no class rankings, published GPAs, or Valedictorian/Salutatorian. Graduation speakers are voted on and they elect a class poet laureate to write and read a poem at graduation. And as for the sewing, I won't lie and say it was easy. There were a few times that DH said to me that if he had $350 he would go buy that other dress and light this one on fire for all the frustration I was having. I must have sewed and ripped the skirt off three or four times to get it right. I am so happy that DD liked it and it had just the right amount of pouf to make it princess-ey, but not so much it was overwhelming. And you can't see it, but in addition to the layers of tulle I added to the skirt, I made her a separate petticoat to wear underneath so she can wear it with other dresses.

Gorgeous! (both your daughter and your work on the dress) That looks like it was really tricky to do -- getting that skirt right must have been hard.

Now I need to know how much you paid for the dress at the resale store! The dress was $50 but MIL paid for it because she was excited that DD asked her to go shopping while we were visiting her over spring break (and MIL likes to spoil her granddaughter). I spent about $50 on tulle for the dress and slip, the mask, ribbons, flowers, and corsage wrist thingys. I am very glad we were able to do so much for so little. My DD is so practical about these things. She couldn't see spending $350 on a dress to wear for a few hours when there are so many things she could buy instead: new technology, stuff for her dorm, nerd swag (her term, LOL). I have already told my DS that when his time comes I am buying him a new black suit and calling it good!
