Dh's birthday is coming up. He likes to film our vacations and put them on DVD with titles, music, etc. The camcorder we're currently using isn't super user friendly, and sometimes getting the footage off the camera and into an editing program doesn't work. Would a GoPro be better? Or is it more for filming sports type stuff? We're going to Hawaii this summer and I was thinking it would be cool for underwater videos.

I love mine! Sadly I can't tell you how easy it is because it's my husbands toy and I never get to play with it. But my DH sucks at electronic and computer stuff and he has no problem using it. So it can't be that hard. The video and picture quality is great.

Someone here posted her family's vacation video at Disney using a GoPro, and I absolutely LOVED it! I wish I could remember who it was or find the thread - does anyone remember? It was a really interesting perspective compared to using a normal hand held video camera.
I would love to get one but there is no way DSO would agree to it. I currently have DD's boyfriend's GoPro, he said I could borrow it any time. I'm thinking of taking it to the snow when we go later this year.

My dad has a GoPro and loves it! Trust me, if he can figure it out I'm sure your husband could lol. We actually did use it in Hawaii last June and it was pretty awesome. The quality of the videos are amazing! My dad got a head mount and put it on his hat while tubing down a river. Also get a waterproof case. We got one and used it in the ocean while we splashed around. It's so little but amazing!

We bought one for one of our daughter's. She LOVES it. She uses it a lot for her guitar playing. I know she would highly recommend it.

I bought my husband the lower level one for Christmas. It was around $125. It doesn't remove from the case, but it does have a waterproof back. It was a good purchase for him. He does not use it enough to justify a $300-$400 camera. So that is an option if the price puts you off.
The camera does agreat job when he uses it.

We have one but we only use it for sports. We mount them on our helmets for mountain biking and SO mounts it to his dash on his race car. It's a fun little toy!

That may have been my Disney video... I know I have linked it here before. I have been using a GoPro for a few years now and absolutely love it. My only complaint is that there is no zoom, and sometimes it would be nice to have that. Most of the time though, I appreciate the wide angle first-person perspective. I find the image quality very crisp and sharp. Low light quality is not great but since it's mainly intended for outdoor use, that is not usually a problem. I will link my video again - there is some nighttime footage in it and you can clearly see the difference: Walt Disney World 2014 GoPro VideoAnd shameless self promotion - my latest video, from our March Break trip to Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort. It was shot roughly half on the GoPro and half on a Canon 70D. The GoPro footage is the wider angle stuff taken during some of the action events (aerial treetop course, kayaking, biking, etc.) March 2015 Disney HHI Resort Video

Does the go pro do any stills? We're going to the ocean this summer and I'd like to avoid taking my dslr if possible but can't decide on a camera to take. I keep thinking about the gopro but I just can't decide if it's what I need.

Looks like such a fun vacation! Off to check out your WDW video next! we love our GoPro! We just took it with us to England and France. We have also used it in Hawaii and Disneyland. We have various acessories for it such as a telescoping pole, clamps etc. While at Disneyland we saw one person with thier GoPro attached to a lanyard around thier necks. We thought that was a great idea especially for a place like a theme park.

Dh's hobby is dirt biking and he goes back and forth on wanting one. He wonders how often he will actually use it, to justify the price. I have thought it might make a nice Christmas gift. I see them used on the on-line group from time to time and mention them to him but so far he hasn't been interested enough.
I always thought of them as strictly for sports, and am intrigued by the idea of using them for other things as well.

We have gone through many camcorders over the years, but it seems like they are on their way out. We're in the process of converting old home movies on mini DV tapes and it's really hard to find parts or cameras that will play them. I like that the GoPro will take still shots, and supposedly they released some software you can download to edit your movies. I wish there was a zoom feature, but maybe that will happen down the road.
