I woke up this morning around 6:30 am with horrible abdominal and back pain. I am not usually one to run to the doctor for every little thing, but after about two hours the pain wasn't subsiding. I wasn't able to get comfortable and I also couldn't (tmi) urinate more than a few drops, even though I had the urge. I threw up and that's when I knew I had to get to the ER.
My husband was at work in a meeting, so he didn't have his phone on him. He was concerned this morning when I was in pain but I told him to go in before the pain got too much to handle. Luckily my mom was still at home, so she picked me up and took me to the ER.
Some blood work, a urine test, a CT scan and some morphine later I was diagnosed with tiny kidney stones. So tiny the nurse said I probably won't even see them in the strainer when I pass them. Holy crap, I have never been in so much pain in my life! My mom got my prescription filled, I took a dose and now about an hour later I'm resting comfortably without awful cramping. I'm drinking lots of water and hopefully I will pass this sucker soon!
Also, slightly related, I bow down to any of you ladies who had a completely natural child birth. I told my mom while I was waiting for the nurse to get morphine that I was definitely not fit for a drug free birth! And I will never be too old to get tucked into bed by my mom when I'm not feeling well. I love her so much.

Ugh, I've been there. Sorry for your pain! I ended up with shingles at the same time, probably brought on by the stress of the kidney stone pain. I was a mess. I hope it goes away soon for you.

My former boss had an episode of kidney stones. He was so sick and hurt so much that once he recovered, he gave his wife a very generous gift. She had given birth to 4 boys, natural births - no drugs, and they all had rather large heads.
Her gift was a week at a spa, airfare included. And flowers. And dinner out.
Hope you feel better soon.

I get stones and I know what you mean... I just want drugs and my mom to tuck me into bed...lol Once you pass them, you'll revel in how pain free you feel - it's like you have this reverent appreciation for the miracle of urination...lol

I haven't passed it yet, I still feel pretty sore, but I'm not doubled over any more. And I have an appetite! That is usually the #1 sign, for me, that I'm on the mend. Thanks for the well wishes. I remember my Papa having kidney stones when I was a little girl. He must have blessed me with them, too .

I'm so, so sorry for you. I had 2 last year...one in each kidney. The first put me in the ER and I was proactive with the other one and got it broken up (still had an excruciating day as the largest piece passed. Threw up more than I thought possible. Couldn't keep pain meds down. The recovery both times was really long. Worst experiences of my life and I've had 3 kids without drugs! I hope you feel better really soon.

Happy stone passing! Hoping yours goes quickly.
I passed a 3.5 mm stone last month, and at the follow up appointment they found a 8-9 mm stone still in my kidney. My urologist told me they'd have to break it up because it was too big to pass. I had the procedure done 2 weeks ago and I'm a little nervous that it didn't work. I should have had bruising where the blasted me with sound waves, and I bruise really easily, but the only bruise I had was on my wrist where they tried to put the IV in. It was still there a couple of days ago.
I never saw anything in my urine, but I didn't use a strainer the first two times post-surgery and I stopped using it at home after 5 days. The worst part of the whole experience was the 5 day course of Levaquin. That is my least favorite antibiotic. It makes me feel like I have the flu minus the puking.

I'm not liking posts because I like that you ladies have had kidney stones! But to show my sympathy. I am so sorry to all of you who have experienced this, I was rolling around on the gurney like I was Linda Blair in The Exorcist!
I've been keeping up with lots of fluids and I'm feeling more like myself.

I feel so bad for you. BTDT when I was pregnant with my first. I didn't know what the heck the pain was, but like you, I was rolling and thrashing around in pain. I thought I was having back labor pains, it was horrible.
Hope you're feeling better soon!
***eta***Wanted to add, I never knew when I passed them. I think they were small and they must have broke up or something. Can't quite remember, all I remember is the pain.

It was the worst pain I have ever been in. A friend, who has had kidney stones and given birth, told me that kidney stones hurt worse.

Does the pain compare to a gall bladder attack? because those are brutal, too.
What causes kidney stones?

Unfortunately, I've had many kidney stones. They are absolutely the worst!! And, I'm sorry to say that since you've had one, you're very likely to have another. Also, you probably already know this, but the pain will subside for a while once it gets to the bladder, you'll think you're in the clear and then, bam!, it starts moving out of the bladder. In my experience, that pain is way less intense and doesn't last as long, so that's a bit of good news. Isn't morphine the best drug ever??

Oh, yea, fun times. I had one about 2 yrs ago. Went to urgent care, and they dx'd it. Saw the urologist..oh, yea, it will pass on it's own..wait..and wait..and wait. I didn't have a lot of pain during the whole thing, just back pain, blood in urine, and some sharp pains once in awhile. Worked every day, etc. after a few mo's of this, and some nausea, they were like..ok..lets do lithotripsy. So they did that. Oh yea, they got it good. go back in 2 wks for check up and I'm like, ya know..it feels the same. Do a CT..ah.yea, it's still there. It's just flatter and moved down. GREAT. Ok, it's moved, so now it will pass on its own, right? nope, wait another MONTH. nothing. Ok..scope. They go up and get it, and put in a stent. WORSE thing ever. take it easy over the wkend, and Monday they pull the stent. WORSE pain ever. I had huge cramping, and THEN, THEN I had the pain. ended up in the ER. OMG. what a freaking nightmare. I had that darn kidney stone for like over 4 mo's. Tips..drink Lemonade, and heating pad to your back.

I swear, I can spot a kidney stoner a MILE away. Especially a guy! Some people can fake pain but there is no mistaking a kidney stone - you just can't fake sweating no matter how good you are.
I have never had one but I can see the pain in the faces of my patients and it breaks my heart, which is amazing since ER nurses don't have hearts. Seriously, we do with"real" patients. I know you are in a lot of pain. Beer really does help if you are a beer drinker. It is a diuretic and can help you deliver that baby. I mean stone.
Hope you are better soon! m

I sympathize totally.
An Unpassed kidney stone ultimately caused my sudden cardiac arrests.
I wasn't bleeding from the stone, ER just kept doing nothing, the stone eventually rotted through my ureter tube. Surgery to fix it. All combined the long qt prolonging drugs given to me for that kidney stone had me have three sudden cardiac arrests.
I live in fear of getting another.
The good in it is it uncovered genetic long qt in my family and now myself, my mom, my sister and especially my daughter are better protected on beta blockers.

I've had many, and you have my sympathy. They're beyond vile.
In the many times I've been to ER, I have only encountered a few nurses/doctors who have experienced kidney stones. They were extremely compassionate. Most of the time, I've been treated kind of indifferently, by staff that admit they've never had a stone. Like 'yeah- you have to be here I guess, but you're nothing exciting'. Not treated badly- but like I wasn't particularly urgent. It's so frustrating.
The last time I was in, I had a HORRIBLE dr. and nurse that couldn't be bothered. They actually told me I'd passed the stone already when I was still doubled over and crying. I just about lost my mind.
I don't think I have ever appreciated compassionate, kind people as much as I do when I have a kidney stone.

If they can tell you what kind of stone it is, definitely find out... Also ask about lemonade/citrus fruit/vitamin C intake... Some people break down it down into oxalate, which is the cause of a high number of stones... There have been a lot of old wives tales about what/what not to eat/drink, and a lot have been disproven... A lot of what works/doesn't depends on they type of stones you're most susceptible to, but you can make more than one type so you can avoid making one type while making yourself another... This explains the vitamin C/citrus findings www.health.harvard.edu/blog/high-dose-vitamin-c-linked-to-kidney-stones-in-men-201302055854

And look, I know the ER has more patients than me, but I've been in sometimes when it's clear that things are slow, and DH has had to go track people down and basically beg them to get me some drugs. I can essentially place my own drug order at this point. When people have shown compassion, even just so much as apologizing for how long it's taking, it makes such a difference in the experience.

I absolutely agree! It's maddening. It's like they don't believe it's as bad as it is. I have weird experiences with pain meds too- something that's worked in the past doesn't necessarily work again. Morphine is good, but it makes me throw up. Trying to get all this info across while doubled over in pain is like an exercise in terror. And when you get too specific about what works in terms of pain meds, they either treat you like you're drug seeking or you're a drama queen. I just want to scream "I've done this a dozen times before- I know what I'm talking about!"
I really wish ERs took stone seriously. Half of my anxiety about going in, when I have to go- is my fear of not being taken seriously by the staff.

Oh you are so right about the nurses not being speedy with the pain meds! I could see my nurse's feet under the curtain just outside my door and she spent a good four or five minutes talking with another nurse before she finally decided to come in. I was groaning "Pleeeease, come in, pleeeeease I'm in so much pain!" She finally came in and of course had to prep the stuff and explain everything she was doing. I was so thankful when the morphine finally kicked in.
On a different disappointing note - I was supposed to watch my niece tomorrow. It had been planned for a while. I had to cancel, obviously, and her mom sent a text to me that was intended for someone else. She said I was screwing her over. Awesome. Like I totally planned this to ruin to your day! She tried to smooth it over but I'm just not in the mood right now.
