So we are taking the kids down to Disney. DD is 4, ds is 2. I'm working on dresses for dd and I was wondering about poof! So if I was making a dress for dress up here at home the more tulle and poof the better. But I'm wondering if I shouldn't make them quite so big since we are going to be walking around a lot and going on rides and the like.
I would love your thoughts!
Also if you have any must dos or tips I would take those too!

No tulle....it'll be hot no matter when you go and I myself cannot imagine having that kind of fabric near me... go with some light weight cotton.

Sorry...we are not "Disney" people in general so I didn't know I needed to be more specific. Also coming from CA everyone just calls Disneyland Disney.
So we are going to Disneyland.

beaglemom - did the kids behave so well at your inlaws that they get to go to Disney as a treat?

I took my kids when they were 4 and 6. Disneyland--we lived in Las Vegas and just called it Disney. DD was 4 and she just wanted to see the princesses. We spent a lot of time meeting the princesses and at the story times. She wasn't big on the rides at all.
She did wear her Cinderella dress all four days at the park. It had been washed several times, so the tulle was a bit calmer and not so fluffy. We took the stroller and she rode around in it--she just walked in the rides area. It wasn't that busy, but I didnt want to lose her in the crowds. Honestly, I think it was the dress and the princesses that made that trip for her. Everyone waved to her in her costume and acted like she was actually Cinderella. She did take the dress off to eat, but otherwise she wore it most of the time. I'd make a princess dress with the poofs and flounces and have her wear something under the dress. That way, she can take it off if she wants. Id fully line it so that it's not itchy. I'd worry about that more than poofy.

Basket1lady Thank you! I do plan on lining it in cotton voile. I'm also trying to figure out if I can just make a full tulle skirt that she can just slip over the rest of the dress for the Anna and Elsa meet and greet stuff. The Minnie Dress and Ariel dresses are all cotton. It is really just the Elsa dress that I'm worried about. I love the idea of having her eat in something else - genius! We are going for her and she is all about the princesses!

When we went in December, I brought along the non-poofy Elsa dress I made for DD for Halloween and a brand new Disney Store Aurora dress that we surprised her with once we were there that I'd say is medium poof, LOL. The tulle flattens totally down when it's packed and will fluff up again nicely once you take it out and fluff it. Once we got there, she sweet talked her dad into buying her the Anna Coronation Day dress at the Bibbidi Bobbedi Boutique which also has a fair amount of tulle. The Disney Store and Disney Parks dresses are fully lined, so the tulle doesn't touch the kid's skin at all. (Believe me, if it would have been uncomfortable at ALL she would have complained!) We had no issues at all with the poofy dresses and the rides we went on either, and we went on lots of rides.
Like I mentioned, we went in December so even with the polyester dresses I still made her wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt underneath and a jacket at night or she would have been cold. In the summertime, I don't think they would be that hot to wear because the ones we have are quite thin and airy.
For how much work the Elsa dress was to make (and how much it cost for the materials and notions), it's probably cheaper to watch the sales on disneystore.com and just buy one when they go on sale. I think the Aurora dress I bought was about $24, and I got her a Sofia the First dress that she'll get for her birthday for around $20.
If your kids are as Frozen crazy as mine, you will want to use at least one of your Fast Passes on the Anna/Elsa meet and greet. It sure beats standing in line forever, especially if you will be there in the summer when it will be hot. If you scrapbook, buy the MemoryMaker in advance and you'll save $50. We took advantage of almost every PhotoPass photographer we saw and ended up with a lot of great pics of our days at the parks and even Downtown Disney. And speaking of PhotoPass photographers, pretty much any of them that you see without a tripod can do Magic Shots and they are SO fun! You usually have to ask but if they can do it they will happily oblige. We had Chip the teacup, Olaf, Anna and Elsa, Sebastian, etc. added to some of our pics and they turned out really cute. Oh, and don't forget to go to Guest Services inside the park to pick up My First Visit buttons for your kids! They are free and they make a great keepsake.
Have fun!

I would make the dress however poofy you (or she) want! I would also dress her in shorts and a tank top or something easy and lightweight under the dress so she could easily take the dress off whenever she wanted!
You might also look into making her an appt at the Bobbidy Bobbidy Boutique!

Thank you for all the ideas! We have an appointment at the Frozen/Anna and Elsa boutique. We are going Saturday-Tuesday - so looking at the weather it is going to be mid 70's - mid 80's, so having the tank and shorts under is a great idea. We are staying at one of the Disney hotels so the plan is on Monday to go in for the hour early to get the Anna and Elsa fast pass. Then go back out for her appointment at the Anna Elsa boutique and then back in to play! She really wanted the pink dress that the mice make for Cinderella in the cartoon version (I was looking for dress ideas on pinterest and that is the one she asked for the most), but I can't throw that together before Friday. The Elsa I already have all the fabric for since she has been asking for another one for a while now.

DD was 4.5 when we went and she never wanted to take her princess dresses off. She also never spilled or dropped anything on hers when she ate. It might be an easier sell to bring along a bib with Velcro at the back of the neck that you can pop on and off easily if you're worried about her spilling.

I just got back from Disney yesterday. Disney World for those who care. It was wonderful! Just a quick stop in for husband and I after we took a long weekend cruise!! Anyway..... My opinion on tulle is this. The bigger the better!!! I saw so many little girls wondering around in dresses ( my favorite was the one like Snow White ) and most of their dresses were flat. I would have been tickled to see a fuller skirt! You may need to send pictures! This opinion is coming from a Mom of all boys. That totally makes a difference as I'm used to dirt and rocks instead of tea and princesses . I would agree though....have clothing (light weight) under it for easy changes!!

I am guilty of that quite frequently......but this (original post and reply) made me giggle. Thanks for the laugh!!

I vote tulle. Lots and lots, the poofier the better.
Many years ago we toook both DDs to Epcot wearing princess dresses with shorts underneath. Also with tiaras and veils, because a girl doesn't often have a chance to wear her tiara and veil all day. We drew the line at cowboy boots because even Texan princesses need tennis shoes at WDW, even though boots would add that certain fashion flair that a ball gown (and tiara) so desperately needs.
Belle (in blue dress) leaned over to DD1 (in yellow ball gown) and said "I love your dress. Mine is at the cleaners."
Poof. Lots and lots of poof. Oh and pictures too!

We took our now 13 y.o. to WDW for the first time the summer before Kindergarten. He wore a tee-shirt or polo, shorts, & sneakers every day & received lots of attention from every character we encountered. He was selected, reluctantly accepted, & still recalls acting the part of Gaston in the play with Belle; she was his favorite princess because, like him, she liked books! I would recommend your child wear comfortable shoes & clothes - whether shorts/tee-shirt, poofy dress, or any combo. Especially with two young children (& if a humid day), you may want to consider how many clothes you are willing to carry & change throughout the busy parks. Hope you & your family a safe & fun trip!
