Let's start off by making it perfectly clear...I am NOT a painter. I am both brush and roller challenged. My DH usually assigns me the taping and painting the inside of closets. This time he doesn't have time to help paint DD room that has to be finished in 1 week so it falls on me. I have to paint over bright green and blue semi gloss walls. DD chose a brown color. I know I need a really good primer that will stick, but I haven't a clue what brand of paint to buy. I was reading reviews online but they were not much help. DH only advice was do not buy Sherwin Williams because he disliked working with that paint. Please tell me which paint brands you liked/disliked and why and if you used 1 or 2 coats. Oh, I'm planning to use eggshell finish. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The painter we used last time used Sherwin Williams- around here, that is what all the professional painters use. When we have painted rooms ourselves, we have used Behr with the most success.

When we went from a very dark green to a light green we got Behr with primer. We also got a primer and had it tinted the lighter green. Fantastic coverage. I do not know if we needed the primer but it seemed to make the paint coat easier.

I'm not brand loyal, I usually just find out which store has their paint on sale when I need paint and buy that. That said, the Behr with primer is really good. That's from Home Depot.

We have used several different brands. The only kind I don't care for is Valspar. It seems very thin (runny) and hard to work with. If you already picked the color, what line is the chip from?

I recommend Benjamin Moore. We own an independent paint store, and that is our main brand. There are several lines with different price points, but they all do well.

Sorry, I only use Sherwin Williams and make sure I let them know what the project is so I get the right paint.

Behr paint with primer, love it! We just used this on two projects where we painted lighter colors over darker colors and were able to do it in one coat.

I have never, no matter what brand I was buying or the project I was using it on, been happy with one coat. The second coat always looks better. It just evens things out perfectly and makes things nice.
I have used Glidden with great success in my home. We're switching over the Behr now but the Glidden we're covering has been great and stood up to nearly everything. I just like working with the Behr a little better and have liked their colors better for my current project (I prefer buying from the line who put out the color rather than trying to color match if at all possible. Color matching isn't always accurate.)

Funny.....I have painted a lot of rooms in several houses and have tried a number of brands. Best to work with in my opinion is sherwin williams. And they can help make sure you pick the right one for what you are doing. I won't use anything else. (Although I would be willing to try Benjamin Moore because I've heard good things but there's never been one near me).
ETA: I always do 2 coats on walls.

DH won't use anything but Behr. Regardless of which brand you choose be sure to let them know thatyou are painting over semi-gloss. The guy at the paint store can recommend what will give you the best coverage.

Behr with paint and primer here as well. We helped my BIL paint his house and he used Sherwin Williams, it didn't cover as nicely or as well as our Behr paints do for us!

We've been painting our whole house and using Benjamin Moore regal for the most part. I've been really happy with the coverage. It goes on really nicely and feels smooth to the touch when dry.
I used some behr paint plus primer for the trim and it doesn't go on near as well.

Paint has shipping issues so you're going to get a variety of answers depending on where you live. We like eggshell finished walls, and depending on where we've lived we've had Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams, and Duron long ago. I dont know if Duron still exists. We hire painters too, their skill and speed is worth it!
ETA if possible go to a paint store instead of a big box store. The big box might have the same brand names in some lines, but often have lessened the specifications to meet a lower price poiint.

We only use Sherwin Williams. We have a store within a couple of miles and the employees that work there are really helpful.
I'm getting ready to paint our master bathroom and the color scheme is shades of plum, grey and white, so I'm painting the walls SW Silver Peony which is a light lavender with a grey tone.

The lowes paint mentioned above was excellent--we just painted every room in the house with it, one coat was perfect!

Behr paint with primer is awesome! We did red in our kitchen with this paint and it covered beautifully in one coat.

Valspar --from Lowe's
Covers in 1 coat, costs a little more because you get a better quality paint, IMO.

When we moved into our home last august we had to repaint my scraproom. It was a hideous and very bright and dark yellow gold color. I have never really seen this color before and hope I never do again lol. It was semi gloss to which was odd for a bedroom and I was afraid of anything covering it. Well we tried the Behr marquee stuff that was guaranteed to cover in one coat and it did. Love it. We used the same color in another bedroom that had the original flat builders paint and those walls sucked up more paint and needed two coats but the one with the nasty color and semigloss only took one. We have now used it on three rooms and love it. Only having to do one coat vs two or three was amazing. The third room was a very bright yellow but normal sheen. It also covered it in only one coat.
Good luck. I need to start painting around here as well luckily it don't have to worry about covering up any hard to cover colors.
eta hubby hated and I mean really hated Valspar he said it was to thick and sticky. He will never try it again.

I have used a variety of paints over the years and the last time I painted I used sherwin williams, love it. color is great, coverage is great. I will only go there now. Also they frequently have 30 to 40% off sales

Sherwin Williams used to be the most runny paint out there. My husband would not buy it. We now use Behr paint with primer and it is great, Home depot.
Having said that, a friend had my husband help paint at her house-she had Sherwin Williams paint-now with the primer in it and he said it was great. Much better than it used to be.
Good luck
