I'm a real fan of TripAdvisor and use it often. I do write reviews, both good and bad and sometimes include photos. I don't do it every time I visit a reviewable place, but sometimes will sit down and do a bunch of reviews at once of places that I have been to recently. I really do depend on the reviews when choosing places to go, but like most of you, I find there are a lot of irrelevant comments. Also, sometimes things are written that I don't care about, for example, a review of the lounge, which I won't be visiting anyway. It's still nice to get a good feel of the attitude of the management though in how they have or have not handled problems that others have had.

I write good and bad and try to do pros and cons. Basically what I would want to know. I have 85+ reviews and about 75 helpful votes. I notice that I get more responses from management now that I have so many reviews under my profile.

I do it for both good and bad. Since I use TripAdvisor on a regular basis, I feel it's only fair to contribute. I've rarely had to leave a bad review. Most of mine have been glowing. But it might be because I checked with TA first to see if the place was good . This exactly.

I feel like the reviews on Trip Advisor have served me well, so I try to leave feedback when we travel.
I find that the reviews are like those on Amazon: you have to read between the lines. I'm more likely to take a review seriously that tells me specifically why a place was great or one that has legitimate reasons for problems a customer had than vague comments or complains about things that were beyond the establishment's control . (Ie "It was raining!")

I have posted reviews on trip advisor but only when I'm either very impressed or very disappointed I always read trip advisor reviews before booking a hotel - but I try to take the reviews with a grain of salt because it seems most reviews are just to complain

I've written a fair number of reviews on trip advisor, but probably not as many as I should.
I pour over the reviews on trip advisor and I really appreciate it when people include details that you would only find on trip advisor. For instance, when I'm planning my trip I appreciate knowing how much a cab from the airport to the hotel will cost and whether it's worth the extra cost to book a room with a view.

Only rarely. I have good intentions to do it, but unless I do it straight away I tend to forget the details that are useful to other travelers.

If I take a trip, even an overnight, I write a review on TripAdvisor. I use that site like my bible, so it is only fair to give back. Tripadvisor has sent me lots of nice little gifts as a thank you (hats, shirts, etc). My reviews state both positive and negative(if any) experiences and occasionally pictures.

I always write reviews on TripAdvisor. I try to write a pros/cons style to give a better feel. I haven't had a bad trip since I started checking reviews before we went.
BTW My best friend is a mucky muck at TripAdvisor; she loves the company. It's a very interesting place to work, and they are very good to their employees.

Yes I have written a few and many people have said the information was helpful.

I absolutely do. I've even done it for some local attractions. I use TA when planning trips, and I think it only fair to contribute. I've left very few negative reviews, but I try to be thorough and fair.

I love TripAdvisor! I use it to research any trips we take, and I will leave reviews - good and bad - for places we visit. I've only done a couple local reviews, though. I probably should do more.

Ever since planning our trip to Paris & London and pouring over every inch on trip advisor for those two cities, I leave as much feedback as we can on Trip Advisor, good, bad and ugly(rare). Some cities the forums stand out as amazing message boards (like ours is here) and I would spend every other second there learning about the city we are about to visit. Our vacation this year is to a new place and the forum on Trip Advisor is probably the very first one I am not pleased with and the people and it almost made us chance our travel plans. But yeah, I try to review every place we can even the ones here at home (because I figure at some point someone is traveling here for vacation.

This thread makes me happy. I love TripAdvisor so much - one of the best sites on the internet in my opinion. Love that the peas are so active with sharing their experiences! I write reviews there, too, as I think it's important that we all contribute to keep the site relevant. I don't know what I'd do if it ever shut down lol.

That's very close to what I was going to say. I find Trip Advisor to be an extremely valuable tool and appreciate the others who contribute honest reviews to it. I enjoy writing my reviews -- it's another little way to re-live some memories of the trips we take.

I have and recently decided to start adding more when I go to new places. So far, I've only left positive reviews.

Back in 2001 or so I read a lot of reviews because dh and I wanted to go to this really expensive restaurant in Detroit and spend the night at a nice hotel. We didn't have much money to travel anywhere, but we wanted something cool.
All the reviews for the Ramada downtown looked decent. The Booker hadn't even been remodeled, and the other hotels were just so expensive.
The hotel was HORRIBLE. Imagine being stuck on the empty streets in downtown Detroit. At night. Alone. except, you're experiencing this IN the hotel because horror or horrors, half the hotel is a flop house. For real. Sheets on the windows of this high rise. There were two people smoking crack in the elevator as we went to our room. We didn't last 2 minutes because someone down the hall was screaming actual bloody murder along with the sounds of fists hitting flesh, and the place so so filthy. There was a jacuzzi. The water was black. There isn't enough fire in the world to clean that out. Oh, and there was an illegal rave in the basement. Ramada refused to refund our money and charged us for the whole night. I even complained to corporate and was given a big fat FU as a response.
I seriously could NOT believe that nobody had posted a negative review of this hotel. So I did. On behalf of the poor, misjudged city of Detroit. Actually staying on the streets would have been less dangerous and much more pleasant.
The restaurant we went to is still one of the very best we've ever gone to (of course it's not still there--it was better than The Whitney, and that was excellent), and we made our way around Chicago's top restaurants in the 7 years we were there.
Dh and I do rely on the reviews a lot. There are a lot of strange reviews. It's kinda difficult to read between the lines sometimes. Other times it's easy when the management gets in a flame war with reviewers. Nope, nope, nope.

Oh yes, I've written quite a few. I always check the reviews before I book hotels as well. I've received some great info off of Trip Advisor over the years about tours in Europe and restaurants.
