start preparing things to take? Me: If I KNOW for a fact that I want to take a piece of clothing, I try not to wear it for 1-2 weeks leading up to the trip, so I don't have to wash more than I need to before the trip. I just start a stack, and put everything in one place, but I don't put anything in the suitcase until the day or so before. I have DH do the same. He picks out what he wants and puts them in the stack, or brings them to me as I am packing; toiletries go in the morning of. I start pulling together "carry-on" type items a few days before...camera(s), books, magazines, snacks. I like reading magazines in the car, in the plane or on the beach. I start collecting them (I USED to buy scrap magazines, but there aren't anymore in paper form that I want. ) about 2 weeks before, and just save them up for the road trip. I also take books, but magazines are easier. I do try to read one full book while on vacation. ETA: Funny thing is, we have to be pretty careful with what we take, if we take my car. We usually only drive it to the beach, and you have to pack VERY carefully with just ONE carry-on sized suitcase for both of us, a beach bag, towels, a thermal bag with some frozen meals in it for lunches or dinners at the beach house...It's really fun trying to get it all crammed in there! LOL There are only 2 of us, so I'm sure it doesn't take me as long as those of you with bigger families, although, we also have to put together Wili's bag for going to my parent's house.

Honestly? Like the day before. ha ha And its an allll day affair. I do all of the laundry first, fold and then make separate piles for what I am packing. I have three kids though, so I am never on top of laundry on a good day. I feel like doing it this way just makes less work for me (although it does make for a very long day of packing right before a trip).

I'm a list maker. So I start making lists in advance. I will write a general list and then as we get closer it will be more detailed down to exactly what i am packing. As we get closer like the week before, I will start taking out the clothes that are going to be packed...especially for the kids. I know I will have laundry to do the day before we go so I try to keep that to a minimum. I cross things off the list as they get put in the suitcases that way nothing is forgotten.

I keep a packing list in Excel, divided up by clothing, toiletries, carry-on, then add ons for various types of trips (beach, camping, anywhere out of the country, places with a kitchen). Uber-anal I know, but it works for me. I used to get anxious and lose sleep, and then start tossing crap in piles about a week before a trip, all in the name of not forgetting something. Now I don't stress. I stockpile magazines a couple weeks before the trip, do laundry 1-2 days in advance, and then pull out my list(s) and start packing either the night before or the morning of depending on when we leave.

Not until a couple of days before. I have a very limited wardrobe so can't pack much of anything ahead. DD's and dh's are more extensive but still, I just have a list and then a couple of days before I start throwing stuff in if I know we won't need them before. Like beach towels for the beach, sunblock, stuff like that. But so much of it we need until the morning we leave, that I just can't start too far ahead.
You just inspired me to update our packing list for this summer's vacation, so thanks! I've been meaning to do that.

I will bookmark this thread, I need some major packing advice. I do make lists, but I could do a better job!
I try to get stuff ready 1-2 weeks before. I am not a fan of traveling, for me it seems to mean so much work. I don't like running all over the day before a trip to get things for the trip. I have a toiletries bag ready at all times.
I also have to have a clean house before we go. I have my neighbors check my house when we are away. I worry that we left the stove on, or something like that. I actually go through the house and take pictures of all the outlets, stove, etc. because I can't enjoy a trip if I think something could cause a fire. I am so crazy! I never worry about someone breaking into the house, I could go to bed with the door unlocked and not get up to check it. But if I forgot to check the stove, I run downstairs to make sure it's off. I also worry about someone leaving water running in the sink, or a toilet leaking (I have heard stories about badly damaged homes from things like this.).
If I were rich, I would buy two of everything so I could always have a summer suitcase packed and a winter suitcase packed! The hard thing is when we go on trips in the fall and spring. We have to take clothes for possible warm and cold weather. We feel like we have to take a ton of clothes for only a few days.
I definitely need help! haha!

I start putting things on the spare bed about a week before including clothing, toiletries, camera etc. Then I purge/check the items about 2 days before travelling and pack the day before leaving.

Pretty much like 3 hours before going to bed the night before a trip.
I do try to plan what i need to buy in preparation a week or two before hand (sunscreen, new bathing suit, travel items, etc.)

It depends on the trip. If I am going on a snorkel trip, I will start a couple of weeks ahead of time putting stuff in the guest bedroom that we will need to take. I like to get our snorkel gear out and ready and make sure I have my tiny baby shampoo for the masks. I also get the underwater cameras ready to to getting all batteries charged, make sure I have any cables needed if I am taking my netbook with me, etc. I will also get my netbook out and charged. Clothes might wait until a bit closer unless it is a trip in the winter so we are not using our summer clothes. I also like to get out my travel toiletries and make sure everything that I can fill ahead of time is ready to go. I always have last minutes things that I need to add to the toiletries. Nothing gets packed until the day (or maybe 2) before we leave.

My husband laughs at me but as soon as we book something I start preparing I have lists of everything, I decide which cameras I'm taking and make sure I have batteries, film and spares ready. I decant all the toiletries we need in to small bottles and have outfits picked out. I love doing it and leaving it til the last minute would stress me out too much. ETA We don't book too far in advance, usually a couple of weeks before we're going to go.

If I'm going somewhere I'm really super excited about, I start pre-packing anywhere from 2 weeks to a month before. I try to stop wearing the clothes that I plan to pack probably a week out. If it's a special piece, or requires dry cleaning or hand washing, I definitely get that done at minimum a week before, earlier if I can help it. I always make a list. I do my final packing the day before, packing around my empty CPAP case. The morning of I pack my CPAP and then re-settle the rest of the stuff in the suitcase. I have doubles of everything else, so those items are packed as soon as I get back from my last business trip, which may end up being the day before. I seriously love planning what to pack for my trip. My sister, cousin, and I booked our rooms for WDW in October just yesterday, and I'm already starting my list.
For work, I pack on Sunday for my Monday flight. Everything except clothes is already in my suitcase. I may double-check toiletries to make sure I'm not low on anything. Then I check the weather where I'm going, decide if I'm going with a brown or black color scheme, and gather a week's worth of work clothes and undergarments (plus one extra for emergencies) and put them in their respective pack cubes in my suitcase. If I decide I need a different sized suitcase than the week before, it takes seconds to transfer everything over.
I also double check my carry-on (or car bag if it's a road trip) the night before. That's the same no matter what type of travel. It has my emergency overnight kit in case I'm stranded without my luggage, reading material (books for air travel, magazines for road trips), headphones, meds, wrap or light jacket, wallet, phone.

It depends on the kind of trip. Camping, the day we leave. We have all our camping gear organized and labeled in the garage and each time we get home, we get everything cleaned and put back where it belongs, so it's ready for the next trip. When we leave the next time, all we have to do is pack clothes and food, put the gear in the car and go. We can be out the door less than an hour after deciding we're going camping.
For a business trip, I plan my wardrobe the week before and get anything washed or dry cleaned that I'm taking with me. When it's clean, I hang all that in the guest room and actually pack it the night before I leave. Most leisure air travel is about the same.
For a family road trip or going to a vacation rental, it's a couple week process of things here and there. Figuring out what all we can fit, what we will need (do we need to take the bikes? tennis rackets? hiking boots? etc), food and kitchen tool planning (we usually do vacation rentals over hotels because we prefer to not eat out all the time), etc.. This is definitely the most time consuming kind of packing, but makes for a super relaxed vacation, so it's worth it.
I keep packing lists for each kind of trip on my phone, and tweak them as need me, so that really streamlines things.

I do laundry that week, but if there are special items I want to take, they are set aside far in advance. For instance, for our Disney trip at the end of May, our ponchos, ears from previous trips, Frogg Toggs, etc. are already ready to go. However, our toiletries will be packed the morning-of so that we can use them until then.
I use Paperless on my phone to check off the things we need to bring as they are loaded into a suitcase.

Hmmm - even though we're not going away until August, maybe I'll start a list now of things I need to buy prior to the trip

A few days beforehand I check my travel-size supplies and go buy more of anything needed. I pack clothes the night before.
I have a carryon size that is filled with the basics, from when DH and I were commuting back and forth between states frequently, and then I can just add whatever clothing I need and my makeup.

I'm a list maker too. I keep a list on my IPad of things I always take like cameras, phone chargers, clothes steamer, etc. If I need to buy anything like snacks or toiletries I do that a few days before. We do a lot of road trips with our car club and I'm getting really good at packing to fit a Corvette "trunk".

A week and a half to 2 weeks.
I'm a list maker and as I think of things I write them down and pack the ahead of time if I can.
I find that doing it so early cuts down on the amount of time I'm wondering after we've left what I've forgotten to pack!

A few weeks ahead of departure I start a packing list that I will add to as I think of things I want to bring, outfits I want to pack, etc.. I have a travel toiletry bag that is ready to go at all times.
I get caught up on laundry a couple of days before I start packing my suitcase, which is the day or night before departure. I am kind of crazy then because I try on all my clothes to make sure I'm comfortable in everything I'm bringing. I also make sure I can mix and match several items of clothing.

I do the same sort of thing, for the same reason-- I love to cross things off the list, plus writing the items down helps me to see whether I've thought of everything I need, or not... but when I pack, I will still (somewhat obsessively) go thru the bag and toiletries two or three times, to make sure I've got my Rx meds, contacts, glasses, etc. etc. because I am always worried that I'll forget something important like that (something I can't live without while we're gone). I also collect a few magazines / books for the plane or car trip; I either get a few newish fashion mags from the used bookstore, or a fluffy-type paperback book or two. (and I'll probably try to put a small-ish bit of art journaling supplies together, too, even though I know I probably won't use any of it, lol!) eta: mixing and matching to make more than one outfit is something I do, but making sure items are comfortable to wear-- never really thought to do that one, and it's a good idea!

If I am lucky enough to be going on a tropical getaway in the winter, I sometimes start packing 6 weeks out. I am not wearing those shorts and tank tops at home, and it just makes me happy to see the suitcase in my room every day and know the trip is coming.
If I'm traveling to the same climate as the one I'm coming from, it's probably a week.

On the 2nd page of my list is a "Things to Do" list, which includes items such as printing boarding passes, holding mail & newspapers, making sure all phones, camera batteries, etc. are charged, watering plants, throwing out food from the fridge, and shutting off the main water valve. I am typically not organized at all, but this list seriously saves my sanity.

I don't have enough clothing that I like to 'not wear' it a week before.
In truth, I have enough tops/shirts to wear a month without repeating--- but they aren't the favored, 'newish' ones I would take on vacation.
So I'm in the 'laundry a day or 2 before, and pack right before leaving' camp.
I've been told by my girlfriends that I need to get a smaller suitcase for our next road trip. There will be 4 of us instead of the usual 3, and like your photo of the trunk indicates, it will be a challenge for us to fit everything in the trunk.

I do small loads of laundry throughout the week so it's rarely an issue of "saving" clean clothes for a trip. I travel a good bit (anything from overnights to long weekends to several weeks abroad) and can pretty much throw a bag together for any given trip on a moment's notice if need be. I do keep a complete set of toiletries packed for short trips so it's easy to just add makeup to the bag.
I still subscribe to a number of magazines but they pile up because I rarely take the time to read them at home. We've had two long road trips this month so I finally worked my way to the bottom of the current stack. I love magazines for trips because I can just shed them as I'm done with them. All I have to show for those two recent road trips is a stack of ripped out recipes to try. The magazines have been left behind all across the country!

The bigger the trip the more time I give it. For a weekend trip to visit in-laws - the night before. A true week long vacation I'll break out the suitcases the weekend before and just drop stuff in it if I can. I don't have lots of extra clothes, so I generally have to run laundry right before I pack.

I am not a planner at all! So about an hour before I go to bed the night before I start throwing crap in a bag/suitcase. My dh is a planner and it drives him crazy. But honestly, plotting out what I need two weeks in advance is so tedious!
I went on a 4 night work trip last month and I left on a Sunday morning. I brought the suitcase up from the basement Saturday night and just started dumping in clothes on Sunday morning. It works for me!
