When did you allow your DD to start wearing light make-up?

Mine asked when she was at the Junior High so i'm guessing 7th grade. I was fine with it when she asked. She just finished 9th and she wears more makeup now, but it's light.

I said yes when they asked for mascara in grade 5 (so age 10). They both quickly lost interest and neither wears make-up now (ages 15 & 13) although I can see my 13 getting into it when she starts high school (grade 8) in the fall. They both own make-up and my only rule is that it be tastefully applied if they are choosing to use it. I get to judge tasteful.

End of 5th grade for my daughter. She asked because all her friends were wearing it, and when I saw how much it made her eyes pop, I loved it! She is fair skinned, with red hair and freckles, so here eyelashes are almost invisible, and it looks really nice when she wears mascara.

For dd#1 it was age 12 ... but, as things usually go, I've been letting dd#2 wear a bit at age 11 ... she definitely doesn't wear it everyday but if she wants to wear a bit I'm OK with it ...

With both dd's ... I taught them how to wear an appropriate amount of makeup and how to apply it properly ... that way there are no problems with it when they are ready to go to school    

Mine were both 13yo. I figured they should get to enjoy some of the fun girly things. What was so funny though, a few weeks after they started wearing a little make up, the new wore off and they didn't wear it as much.

About age 12. I was shocked when she did, because without makeup her eyelashes only looked average, but once she used mascara, those puppies are LONG! The tips are so light you don't see them without mascara. I'm totally jealous and want to trade, but she won't.

Mascara and lip gloss in 6th. Everything else - for her that means foundation, eyeliner, and real lipstick - in 7th. She'll be an 8th grader this year.

She attends a middle school with strict (and kind of ugly) standardized dress, and makeup and hair are her only way to express herself and feel girly. Once in a while she likes a retro look with winged eyeliner and bright lipstick. I guess she's "too young" for that by some people's standards ... but if you knew her, it's just who she is. Very artistic, mature, likes to be different, confident and knows who she is. I don't have a problem with her expressing herself that way.

I think every girl is different, though. My younger one is heading into 6th and I think won't be ready for makeup as early as her sister was. We'll see.

I wore makeup in 5th grade, mainly eye shadow and lip gloss. I promptly quit and have only worn it a few times since. I had a friend whose mom wouldn't let her wear makeup until she was 15. She had a stash at school and wore it while she was there, and took it off before she went home. 

I let them wear just lip gloss around 4-5th grade. My dd is going into 8th now and I told her she can do light eye makeup (neutral colors) and mascara now. I think that's enough to make her happy .

Just took DD13 to Sephora to get color matched last week. We chose a very light foundation (BB cream), mascara and an eyeshadow pallete. She learned how to apply foundation and do her eyes in a light natural way. She will be in eighth grade next month and 14 in October. Only about half of her friends wear any makeup. It is quite variable in our junior high. DD plays in the select jazz band at her school and wanted to be able to apply a little makeup for concerts and such.

My dd is 11 and entering 6th grade - so lip gloss only. Well she can play with make up around the house bit only gloss out.
She is in musical theater and wears heavy stage make up for that ....
I will allow light make up for middle school which will be 7th grade and she will be 12, turning 13 when she starts.

Eta - it hasn't been an issue for us at all. So far she's happy with lip gloss and gets her fill of full stage make up...so she hadn't asked for more. Anyway make up isn't allowed in elementary school so the middle school thing works us - and then she can wear whatever make up she wants I guess.

I allowed it when my daughter expressed interest in it...about 7th grade.

I took her shopping, got what was appropriate from what she liked and then showed her how to use it, then she went on Youtube and found a ton of really great tutorials.  The way she wears it now, just beautiful!  She's better at it than a lot of grown women I know.

BTW, if you forbid it, she'll just want to do it more, might possibly sneak it while at school.  IMO, 8th grade is certainly at least the right age to start.  She'll want to know what she's doing before high school starts.

My DD started wearing light blush and lip gloss when she entered 7th grade. By 9th grade she was allowed to use other make up, with the condition that she didn't go overboard.
