My husband is a news junkie. Not a conspiracy theorist but he stays on top of current events, reported threats, anything that comes across the news, a news website, or the neighbors are discussing.
Last night in the shower I heard about the threat level at Quantico going up, ISIS having confirmed cells somewhere else and a few other things that I effectively blocked out before I said "Babe, I appreciate that you're up on the news but I just can't hear about all of these potentially awful things before bed and honestly, I trust that if shit goes down you'll tell me to run. When that happens i'll listen but for now i'm going to need a super condensed report."
I don't think I have my head in the sand but the more I hear the more it freaks me out and if I watch the news right before bed I will seriously dream about what i've heard. It's awful.
We joked last night that someone could build a detention camp down the street, tell me it's a new vacation cabin/resort and i'd happily pack a bag and be oblivious until they threw me into a room, I realized there was no room service and bad sheets and then i'd be the girl that goes crazy, kicks all of their asses and saves the whole town.
I know things are serious, I know there are scary things happening and I know there are bad, bad people in the world but I just, I just can't.
Where do you fall on the spectrum? Do you need to know it all or are you blissfully aware of the headlines but avoiding the details?

My husband works in Intel. I did also when I was in the USAF. When he says, "No we can go there this year", I just say okay and make other plans.

We live in a suburb of Philadelphia, in the Northeast corridor between NYC and DC. On 911 literally everything shut down and it seemed like time moved in slow motion. I was home that day and myself and another mom were getting other peoples kids after school let out because working friends were trying to find alternate routes and means of getting home. Highways were shut down and public transportation not running. It was chaos. I am not sure the rest of the country experienced quite the same thing.
I do listen to the news, I am a news & politics junkie too but living where we do, and with a son in a major metropolitan area I would rather know more than less.

9/11 was awful, I still have dreams about I lived 30 miles from DC and our house backed up to the Marine Corps base where I worked but I was in DC that day. I dream about walking across the bridge and then hitchhiking to the metro station. I definitely feel much, much more secure in the hills of Ohio. I might be swinging to the side of 'I don't want to know' because I was in information overload for so long living in the DC area.
I'd never really considered that living there could've had an impact. Maybe so.
When my kids are somewhere that i'm not i'll definitely be obsessing over things where they are, I already go that way when we're not in the same state for any reason.

I listened to the news all the time until last summer when it just got to be too much. I was almost ready to go to the dr & get some meds for anxiety but then decided to eliminate (most) of the news from my life. It is nearly impossible to not hear the news, but avoiding it as much as possible has helped me tremendously.
I also sleep better now.

I prefer to worry about things that might actually affect my life. The chance, even if there is a credible threat, that I or someone I know will be killed by a terrorist is so small I don't waste any time worrying about it. I'm a news junkie, I love it, so much. However, I rarely share it with anyone and it rolls off my back. I once read this book, about how to watch the news. Sounds silly right? But it was fascinating and explains the bias we get in the 24 hours news cycle. (Networks are racing to be the first with breaking news, and don't have as much time to fact check, etc...) I haven't read the revised edition, which I'm sure addresses social media more, but I'll get to it. |

my BF is somewhat like your husband... like Compwalla, I prefer to think about things that will actually affect me on any given day or at any given time-- I listen to some local news on public radio, but never watch television news, and usually don't know what's going on to any great level of detail. It works for me. I don't like to worry about things that I can't do anything about- I find it's a waste of mental energy for me.

I do like to be aware of the news day to day, but I can understand those who find regular bombardment of the news to be too much. I have a friend whose daughter traveled to Paris *right after the Charlie Hebdo shooting and she had *no idea what I was talking about when I asked if that made her at all nervous. She says she never, never *ever watches or reads about the news. Now nothing happened to her daughter, she had a lovely time with her college friends while they traveled through Europe. Maybe in this case ignorance is bliss? I probably would have asked my son or daughter to make other travel plans after watching the news. Which is the right approach? I don't know?

I grew up in Manhattan and still have friends and family there (aka Dad). I take note of news reports, but there is little I can do. On 9/11 my Dad and brothers were all uptown, never lost power during Hurricane Sandy, took the same subways as the ebola doctor.
The odds are against the terror threats. I do worry that my Dad is starting to drive like Mr. Magoo, fortunately speeds in Manhattan rarely go above 35 mph.

I don't keep up with that in my daily life. But my DH does, so he does the worrying for all of us. He refuses to vacation in Mexico, even at the resorts where you fly in and never leave. I'm bummed, but there are lots of other great vacations out there.
When we lived in South Korea, I did keep up with it more because the local threat was very real. I'd be out shopping and see a demonstration, or know that if there was a demonstration on a certain day, I'd avoid that area.

I try to limit my news...I used to watch the news every day, but I found it depressing and really affecting me. I will look at it online when I choose to, but really never watch it.
My feeling on some of it is, is there much you can do about it? If not, then i'd prefer not to stress about it so I keep my head in the sand I guess. Hubby reads the news on his phone all the time, last weekend he was looking to complain about something going on around here in the news. It is something people weren't thrilled about, but not something that would be changed. I don't want to spend my time being annoyed by it so I asked him to stop...I just don't want to be dragged down with the negativity.
I try not to worry about things until it's time for me specifically to worry about things. There's always the potential that something bad will happen in your life...I just choose not to dwell there.

They're using the recent shooting in Garland to increase their numbers. There was also a hit list of service members with their addresses making the rounds a couple months back. Some service member's families were also being threatened online.

If I watch or listen to news before going to sleep I will have nightmares. I rarely watch the news. I read it, online, during the day.
Random bad things can happen unexpectedly at anytime and in any place. I refuse to live my life in fear. And I've observed that throughout my life, as I go about my day I always see many more good things occurring, than bad.
The good ALWAYS outweighs the bad, but you wouldn't know that by only watching the news.

I like to be aware too. if it's important enough to be in the top 15 minutes of the news, I pay attention. after that, the news starts to become fluff.

Just today the Pentagon raised the threat level for all military bases. Important info to be aware of if you live on or near a military base or know someone that serves.

Ignorance is bliss in my case. I can't do anything about a terrorist attack, why worry about it? I go about my daily life and do what I would normally do and if the sirens go off to take cover, I will. I don't have a bunker full of food, extra batteries, etc. Hell, I don't even have a bunker.
ETA I count on the refupeas to keep me in the loop and let me know if I need to duck and cover or to avoid a specific country. Don't let me down refupeas.

I used to keep up with all the news, world and local. After 9/11, something happened in me and I just don't want to know anymore. I don't watch the world news and I tape our local news to skim through.
If I really want to know something, I read about it on my home page or come here to the peas.

I delve into "news" much less than I used to. The state of the U.S. media is abysmal, so I get most of my news from non U.S. sources, and I am much less stressed than when I tried to rely on the pundit and sloppy journalist filled American sources.

I keep up with national and international news but when it comes to terrorist activity I have to try and set it aside and trust that the people whose job it is to be in the know will do that. I can't actually do anything so there's a limit to how much extra reading I will do about that sort of thing in particular.

I feel it's extremely important to be up to date on what's going on in the world. I'm not an "ignorance is bliss" kind of person, not knowing what's going on is a scarier thing to me and I don't really understand why people do it to be honest.
