As a spin off of scrapaddie's post about her father working with Werner von Braun and Robert Oppenheimer. I don't know any Hollywood or sports celebrities, but I come from a long line of geeks. I got to take a class with Dr. Harold Edgerton, the inventor of strobe photography and sidescan sonar. My Grandpa studied anthropology under Dr. Margaret Mead at Columbia. My Dad took an English class with Robert B. Parker at Northeastern, although it was in the late 1960s before he was a famous mystery writer. My BIL did his physics post-doc work for two Nobel Prize winners, and got to go to their awards dinners in Stockholm. They're celebrities in the field of quantum physics

Yes. He's not as well-known as some you mentioned, but in his field of study (civil rights era history) he is. I've seen him interviewed for documentaries many, many times. Most recently for a PBS one about the Freedom Riders.

My marketing professor in grad school was the person who would appear on the Today Show the day after the Superbowl to analyze the commercials.

No, but a friend took a writing class at The School Of The Art Institute in Chicago that was taught by David Sedaris. He wasn't a particularly good teacher, apparently, which is funny because if you read Sedaris himself talking about teaching those classes, he'd agree.

I don't know if she's a celebrity, but I took nutrition with a professor who is a columnist for Runner's World, she's authored a couple fitness books, and she used to be a trainer for the Sacramento Kings. I had a mad girl crush on her....still do!

Newt Gingrich was a history professor where I was majoring in history. I AVOIDED taking any of his classes because even back in the late 70's he was a douche. It was a bit tricky getting some of the classes I needed but I managed it.

I did have an associate history professor who had just graduated from Cambridge and wore his academic dress on the first day of class (gown, hood, head dress, etc.) and then his black gown to class every day.

Not in college, but once I entered the world of cake, yes!
For those who are fans of the old Food Network Challenge series, I've taken classes with Karen Portaleo, Joshua John Russell, James Rosselle, Marina Sousa, Courtney Clark, Michelle Bommarito, Rich Reichart and Kaysie Lackey. I'm a very spoiled girl - my friend owns the school where she has had them come teach, and I just banked any hours I worked for her to use towards classes!

I took a class with a visiting professor in the mid 70's that was part of Richard Leakey's team. Very interesting class. He was only with us for one semester, but the best class I ever had!
And, I took an exercise class lead by Richard Simmons )late 80s). He was teaching a seminar on how to lead exercise classes for individuals that used wheel chairs. Man, that guy has some energy..... I know a lot of people think he is a joke, but something about him touched my heart.

I had a professor in law school who was the talk of the nation for a few weeks, but it wasn't for her academic work. It was Anita Hill who accused Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment.

Not so much a celeb in his own right, but my favorite professor at UC Berkeley was the grandson of the French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir and son of the French filmmaker Jean Renoir. He had a strong French accent so don't ask me why he was teaching the history of the English language, but he was. I loved his class and he was a wonderful guy. I also took a couple of writing classes from Ishmael Reed, and then a writing class at SF State from Stan Price, who was a poet and Anne Rice's husband. I learned a lot from both of them. Some of my history professors were well-known in their fields, too.

I am thoroughly enjoying these! Doc Edgerton was one of the best teachers I ever met. He loved to teach, and he loved helping students learn. He was a really nice guy, too. He had an infectious sense of wonder about the world.
And I wrote that my dad took a class from Robert B. Parker in the 60s, but I meant to write the late 50s. It would have been a freshman english class. My dad studied engineering, and didn't pursue too many english or writing classes.
My Grandpa went to school for his PhD on the GI bill, and was a professor of biology for many years.

I had a sociology professor who THOUGHT she was a celebrity because she had been invited to Clinton's inaugural ball. She was quite obnoxious about it.

I took both sociology and the sociology of sports from Harry Edwards at Berkeley who founded the Olympic Project for Human Rights which led to the black power salute at the Mexico Olympics.
He was a very good professor and very interesting. Also quite egotistical, we were required to read his autobiography and as I recall he wouldn't let the book store buy them back. There was quite a black market for them. His classes were large and he was very popular.

I took a few classes with Elliot Aronson - one of the top social psychologists known for his work with Festinger on cognitive dissonance and for developing the Jigsaw Classroom to decrease prejudice and inter-ethnic hostility. I also sat in, but wasn't enrolled in, Tom Lehrer's course on Musical Theater. He just qualifies as a celebrity celebrity, not as an academic celebrity. It was always stuffed to the gills - very popular amongst us Santa Cruz liberals.

When I was in graduate school at the University of South Carolina I had a class with James Dickey. He was a one time Poet Laureate of the United States, but is perhaps best known for his book Deliverance.
He would bring a large suitcase to class each time, unpack about 20 books from the suitcase, and then lecture for the entire class without once using those books.
He was an interesting man and fantastic teacher.

How was Margaret made? I would've loved to of been able to hear her speak My grandpa spoke very highly of her. I think she was the same age as him, but he did his doctoral work after he served in WWII. My grandpa was very progressive and thought she was wonderful.
