Hahaha, that would most likely bug the heck out of me! I do enjoy (mostly) the sound of wind chimes, but certainly not ALL NIGHT LONG!

I wouldn't do it. We've had those neighbors that put up a bunch of wind chimes and they will drive a person totally insane during a storm!

I enjoy listening to wind chimes during the day. At night, they're another story. I wouldn't put them up.

I like the sound of wind chimes if it is a tone I like, day or night. Kind of like white noise. I sometimes hear the clip on flagpole rope outside clanging against pole and it sounds just like sailboat in dock to me and I enjoy being taken back to waterside retreat.
But I know it would drive some nuts. I live in the middle of nowhere with nearest neighbor half to a mile away. If I moved I might make "errors" not realizing things that would bug people. Wouldn't be intentional and would not be bothered if someone brought the error of my ways to my attention. Would you be comfortable mentioning it to your said neighbors?

I wouldn't put them up at all! I like to think that I'm considerate of my neighbors this way.
Of course, wind chimes would drive me crazy after about 60 seconds.

I really don't know them at all. I'm going to give it a few nights, hoping it will turn into white noise like you said. Our houses are right on top of each other, if we don't close our blinds we can see everything going on next door. They put the chimes on the side of the house right next to our bedroom window! The way our houses are set up our backyards create kind of a wind tunnel and there is always wind blowing. I guess they were going to take advantage of that!
I just wonder if they think while they are putting them up, maybe the neighbors on the other side of the window may not like the chimes!? I know I would.

At out last house, I used to lie in bed at night fantasizing about cutting my neighbour's chimes down chime by chime. Drove me bonkers!

Quite a few years ago, we lived in a second floor apartment with a little balcony off my kitchen. I had a set of wind chimes that I'd really wanted to put up but never lived anywhere where it would work. I asked the people who lived underneath us and they had no problem with them. But, after a couple of nights a man from the apartment building that was kind of perpendicular to ours came over and said the wind chimes were driving him nuts. He was nice about it but obviously frustrated that they were keeping him awake. I was bummed about it but we took them down right away. As much as I liked them, knowing that it was keeping someone else awake it wasn't worth it for me.

A lot of people just don't think. We had this situation a few years ago, mentioned it to the neighbours (nicely) and they took them down. No issues.

I was THAT neighbor! My son gave me a set of wind chimes for Christmas, I hung them up and I heard them all night the first night, all I could think about was that my neighbors are probably hating me now! the next morning I cut the weight off of them and now they only make a slight "tinking" sound that can't be heard unless I'm outside. I try to be a good neighbor. :-)

The Middle (my favorite tv show!) had an episode about this same issue! The neighbor (played by Brooke Shields) had wind chimes and they kept the Hecks (main family) up all night.

We have windchimes up at the front of the house. They aren't loud, as in you can barely hear them inside the house. If they were loud, I wouldn't have kept them up. But I have to say, in a neighbourhood windchimes are not the worst noise maker out there. There are far worse noises that we have to deal with at all hours.

I'll admit to having wind chimes in the past, and it was never once something I considered might bother my neighbors.
But I was never one to be bothered by my neighbor's music, or late outdoor bbq parties, or dogs barking. I just figure it's part of the sounds of life, just like traffic.
For the record, I don't currently have wind chimes up, but not because of neighbors' complaints or anything.

I like some wind chimes, but some of those huge ones that make that "clunk, clunk, clunk" sound, I don't care for them. If a neighbor had up a set of windchimes that kept me awake, I would go out in the middle of the night and tie them together. I have one little tiny set of windchimes (only 5 inches in length) that is by my deck, no one can hear them, and we are 5 acres away from the nearest neighbor. ETA: Promo video of "The Middle" where Rita Glossner had all the wind chimes. link"I'm tryin' to beautify the neighborhood." "Aaannyyy hooooo."

We have a neighbor across the street, down 3 houses, that hangs them in the tree in her front yard. We can hear them over here and it makes me nutso.
Luckily for us, we have our windows closed and air conditioning on from early May thru September, so we never hear them except if we're sitting outside.

As close as your bedroom windows apparently are, is it possible they may be trying to drown out other sounds that may transfer at night?

I have a tiny little set of windchimes that are attached to a magnet that are designed to make tiny little windchime noises when you open the refrigerator door. I suppose if it bothers my neighbors they may be a bit too close, so there may be other issues at play.

Considering the fact that I want to open fire with a bazooka on ever bird in my neighborhood when they wake me up at 4:30 in the morning every.damn.morning, wind chimes is not something I would handle well at all.

I'm very sensitive to noise and hate wind chimes, whistling, humming, any of those types of noises!! I am certain there's a lot more noise around you that you are aware. You simply have become accustomed to them. Air planes, trains, cars, all kinds of noise makers all around us. I remember after 911 when all airflight was grounded, how much quieter it was at night. I do not live near an airport and was unaware of all the noise planes actually made, until they didn't

I actually have quite a few windchimes. I especially love the big low toned ones. BUT., lots here are very big. Mine is one of the smallest with 2 acres. And my chimes face away from any other houses. Years ago, one of my neighbors told me that when they did hear them they enjoyed them. So I chime away.

As much as I'd love to have a wind chime, the mature part of me wouldn't do it because of the noise to those that didn't choose to put up the wind chime.
However, there are days, when dealing with a bouncing basketball at 7am, shouting at all hours of the day/night, drinking out in the street until midnight, kids running through my yard, THROUGH and on top of my landscaping, leaving garbage and toys in my yard, that I'd love nothing more than to disturb these ding dongs that live around me that clearly have no consideration for me.
But I'm better than they are. Clearly.

Funny. I just noticed my neighbors' wind chimes tinkling away yesterday afternoon. I think they must be total white noise for me because I almost never notice them. I don't have any wind chimes, but if I did, I don't think it would have crossed my mind they might bother anyone. I'd be that annoying neighbor.

You should expect to wake up one morning and find them gone. Not saying I ever did that. But it could happen. Just sayin'.
Those noises do not go on for 24/7 and those noises do not tinkle at a high pitch. Big difference.

My first reaction to your post was I would want to punch the neighbor! I despise wind chimes. I think the noise travels a lot farther than people think, at least in my very quiet neighborhood.
