I've been drinking green smoothies for a few weeks and finally decided to take the plunge on a high end blender. My Oster is about 20 years old, and 400 watts.
I did my research and settled on a Blendtec because of the twister jar since we eat a lot of nut butters and hummus. I bought a pretty purple one from Kohls online - and it arrived yesterday.
Today I stopped at Trader Joes to get some cashews to make cashew butter. Set everything up and turned on its 1560 watts of power. It sounded like a jet taking off in my kitchen! I jumped literally a foot off of the floor. I had beautiful creamy cashew butter in 40 seconds but my heart was pounding and trying to leave my chest.
I had the same reaction when I made my lunch smoothie a couple of hours later.
I love the results- I never dreamed I could make nut butters and smoothies so, well, SMOOTH. I'm just hoping my startle response doesn't kill me.
So, Blendtec and Vitamix owners, please tell me that 1) I'm not the only initially startled by how loud these powerful beauties are and 2) that it WILL get better and I won't jump every time I start the thing!

I have a Vitamix. You will get used to the sound and pretty soon you will be okay with running it at 5 am like me

They are loud. They will always be loud. But, yeah, I guess you get used to it. Kind of. More of an ends justifies the means situation, if I'm really being honest.

It isn't like blenders are ever quiet, but this IS exponentially louder. I do love the ends so far, so I'm not sending it back, but, man is it loud!

I have a Vitamix as well. Very loud. Scared the crap out of me the 1st time I used it...especially when all the frozen stuff gets pulled down to the blades.

The main reason I returned my Vitamix is because of the noise. I don't think I could ever get used to it. It was very disappointing because I loved what it could do.

This makes me feel better. I bought a vitamix a few months ago a barely use it- noise and power spook me. I've been stocking freezer supploes for smoothies, time to get over my fear.

Our HealthMaster is pretty loud too! It also breaks eventually!!! I complained and they mailed me a new one (didn't even ask for the old one back!!). I don't think I'd buy another one though. I"d rather have a real glass container. But this one is an emulsifier, which I love. I can easily make sugar into confectioner's sugar in an instant (not that it's healthy--but when needed for a recipe, I could do it!). I've made soups, green shakes, everything! Love it. But we try to use it before 10 pm because we live in an apartment. I think my next buy would be the Ninja.

If it does, they'll take care of it. I have read that all the super high speed blenders have plastic instead of glass, because at the speeds they run and vibrations that plastic is actually safer. Some risk of glass shattering. Some of the lower wattage ones still have glass containers though, so you can look there. I am so glad to hear that I am not alone in my startle response to the little jet engine sitting on my counter! When I saw it demo'd at Costco, there were so many people around and it is such a large space that the noise didn't really stand out. It is a smart move for them to demo in places like that!

Our Vitamix is loud but it is worth it. I'm still in awe of how silky smooth emulsifications come out of it. I feel like I am in the private industrial hummus club where everything can have the texture of restaurants.

The only thing my blendtec has seen is rum, simple syrup and the likes hahaha and it does sound like a jet engine enough if I am doing a less heartier job than making peanut butter. I've gotten used to the noise but it's over pretty quick in the "Smoothie" mode

We have the Blendtec too. Not only is it loud, but it dances around the counter! My DH actually called them and asked about it. They said that sometimes there's a bad bearing and they sent us ANOTHER wildside jar. No questions asked. It isn't really any quieter, but you could try giving them a call. Also, just FYI, we used our twister jar to grind cumin seed and could not get the smell out of it no matter what we tried. We called to see if they had any tips for us and they said no we had done everything they would suggest, so here, we'll send you a new jar. They have AMAZING customer service. They have sent us two new jars, no charge, not even shipping. My DH just got the old twister jar out last night and noticed that the smell is finally gone. It took about six months to air out!

No it will not get better, you will always prepare for impact before turning it on. My Mom has a Blendtec and I have the Vitamix. I love the Blendtec a so much more than my Vitamix. My mom kept her 5 year old Kitchen aid mixer and uses it to grind up fels naptha soap bars. Scary Loud! jen

We have a vitamex and I hate it. Well I don't really hate it.. I just don't like using it. My husband research them and bought it with bonus money on his sears award points. It does work great. But I am afraid of putting it together wrong. There are so many things that go this way or that way. I don't really have a need for it. My daughter uses it more than any body in the house. She loves it. The noise is very loud.

She loves it. The noise is very loud. That is one thing I do love about the Blendtec - the blade is part of the jar, there is nothing to put together or take apart, other than the lid. And if you have a second jar - I bought a twister jar for nut butters - it has its own blades. I also don't have to touch anything sharp. I got $90 in Kohls Cash when I ordered it, so can't complain about that. Even though their price was higher than Amazon, with Kohls Cash and then $20 in Kohls Reward money, it ended up being less $ than anywhere else. That sucker IS loud though - people really need to know how loud they are before buying them. Today's smoothie was smooth as silk, though.

I am not sure I would have picked the vitamix if I was looking but life goes on. I like the simpleness of yours. I think husband bought this one because a friend has one and they really like it. I just don't use it enough to figure it out so everytime the subject comes up I always say I don't kow how.... ehehehehe then daughter does it. I know bad mom (slaps hand) well, at least I haven't broken this one like I did the last blender we had.

I must be in the minority I found my vitamix to be quieter than my cheapo blender from Walmart.
