This has nothing to do with me, but there was a news story tonight. I think eminate domain is a cheap way to take someone's land. In the case of the news story the land would be used for a retail/entertainment project.
Here's the deal. If the goverment needs the land to mitigate flood issues or other safety concerns and the owners won't seel for market value or above, I see using it. But to give less than market value is bullshit and to take it to build non-essential buildings is crap as well.
Just my opinion.

I agree with that. We do not need more shopping centers in this world.

freecharlie - I am guessing you are referring to the Glendale story. I drive past that store every day as my daughter works across the street and they have had all kinds of signs covering their windows talking about imminent domain. I have seen news trucks filming in front of the store but tonight was the first time I actually saw any footage. they had a very decent turnout for their "block party" today and I hope all that were in attendance are truly supporting their cause. I understand imminent domain for the points you mentioned, I understood it when they expended alight rail but for another retail shopping center. Aaarrgggg. AND that little area is a bottleneck for traffic - it can take me 10 minutes to navigate 2, yes 2, blocks in the morning and there is no way around it. I am applauding the owners for taking such a stand AND I hope they win. Doesn't Glendale have enough extra revenue now that they have the large, improved Shotgun Willies across the street from this store in the Target parking lot, which happens to be one of the third busiest in the nation. They don't need that store but based on how they own everything around it, I think the little guys aren't going to win. The new shopping center would be less than a mile away from the huge Cherry Creek retail mall. Seriously, no more stores please.

marimoose - yes, that is exactly the story I am talking about. I just don't understand why a government should be able to take someone's land for something that isn't necessary. On a side note, I didn't realize they reopened Shotgun Willies.

This happened in Cincinnati not too long ago and it was a huge brouhaha. A neighborhood in Norwood was deemed crapworthy so it could be torn down for a shopping center. The whole deal was BS.
The fight did slow things down, but the shopping center folks won in the end.

The shopping center that replaced a bunch of homes in Norwood is *across the street* from a shopping center.

On a side note, I didn't realize they reopened Shotgun Willies. Oh my goodness, yes. Shotgun Willies opened back up several months ago in a huge building that is now right behind where the original one was. It does look like a nicer establishment haha. The traffic for the place is crazy and now there are limos and buses and heavy police presence all the time. The place where the original building stood was leveled and now it is a huge parking lot but my daughter heard that they were supposed to be putting a coffee place(just what we need ) in. I can't see that happening with all the cars for the Willies visitors. My daughter commented today at 3 in the afternoon about all the cars. It is crazy and far different from the original place. It is conveniently next door to the new and improved Fascinations store and across the street from the super busy Emerald something or another pot shop. That place increases the traffic issues too. I will give SW/Fascinations credit as they are landscaping their chunk of land quite nicely so it isn't an eyesore. I remember when Shotgun Willies opened and never thought they would make it this long.

I didn't think they could do stuff like that anymore (using eminent domain to take land for commercial development). There was a big Supreme Court case years ago involving New London, CT, and people were so outraged, I thought Congress passed a law outlawing it. Guess I was very wrong. That's terrible.
