We're having a big party for my grandmas 80th birthday this summer. One of the things we'll be doing is getting one of those soft-serve ice cream machines. A cousin had one for her grad party a few years ago and it was a big hit, so I'm hoping this will be too, especially in the middle of July!
I'm trying to get an idea of what kind of toppings people actually enjoy on their ice cream. About all I've got right now is Hershey's/chocolate sauce and mini m&m's. That's not to say that I couldn't go to town and put out a spread worthy of a photo shoot on my own lol, but these tend to be the type of people who aren't going to care about all the little details and cute toppings. There will be kids there, but not a TON, and they are the ones that'll usually pile every last thing onto their ice cream. So I'm trying to find a few good toppings to stick with that people will actually use and enjoy...and so I don't have a boatload of candy leftover at the end .
Can you help a girl out? What are your favorites?

Think of what you'd find at a frozen yogurt parlor. I'd go for ground up Oreos, rainbow sprinkles, peanuts, and strawberries to start. What a fun thing to do for your grandmother's birthday party.

DH made me a sundae this week with ice cream, sliced bananas, Skor pieces, and pecans. It was really good. The bananas made it.

Sprinkles....and nuts, how could I forget those? I definitely need to do some fruit, maybe strawberries. The bananas sound good, esp to make a banana split - but I'd worry about them browning and staying nice. I know you can dip in lemon juice, but can you refrigerate them then and still retain flavor?
Thanks ladies!

I feel kind of dumb asking, but do you mean like the marshmallow cream in jar, or is there something else I don't know about?

crunched up oreos!! The little peanut butter cups You could do different kinds of candies that you can break up so you don't have left over. The Hersey chocolate is our favorite too!

strawberries-- but personally I'd rather have cut-up fresh ones instead of the preserved kind in the too-sweet sauce.
Maybe some crushed up vanilla cookies for people who don't like chocolate?
ETA: a can of spray whipped cream

Hot fudge (get a good quality one, not Hershey's syrup) Hot caramel sauce (but not as much as the hot fudge) chopped walnuts maraschino cherries
Those would be the basics I would stick with. With more people who would be more into it, I would have a ton of other ideas!
2 others I might add because I like them are: strawberries toasted coconut if your people roll that way
Things I would stay away from in July include anything chocolate (due to melting) and bananas, which are more of a cut up and use immediately kind of thing and will get brown and slimy sitting out

That's just the way our luck rolls lol

Brownies! If you want to get fancy, you could get those "bowl" type things that are made from waffle cone stuff. Also, definitely have some cups and cold root beer for those who'd rather drink their ice cream.

Don't pre cut bananas.
Put out some saltines. The older people will love it. Ice cream way back in the day used to be served with crackers.

This must be why; it must be something I got from my grandparents! (it's really good, by the way-- let the ice cream get a bit soft and dip the pretzel rod into it like you're dipping it into any other dip... yummy!)
