DH and I will be spending a few days in Bar Harbor and will be driving there from Boston's Logan Airport. We will be flying in early in the morning and plan on taking our time on the drive. What are the must see sights along the way and any lunch suggestions?
Thanks!!

We have been staying in Castine for a few weeks every year for fifteen years. It is about 20 minutes off of route one not that far south of Bar Harbor, and I always recommend it for the elms and the views . If you are reeaaaally taking your time, you could take a kayak lesson. Red's Eats in Wiscasset is probably the big tourist lunch destination on that drive. But the tourists are right -- it is really excellent. Delicious, large lobster rolls. We usually stop there for lunch on that drive. As for sights, Portland has a cute downtown/waterfront to walk around. The massive L.L. Bean complex is a little north of there in Freeport, if you are interested in that. Camden is a pretty little town to get out and walk around (nice harbor views, a good bookstore, that kind of thing), and Camden Hills State Park (off route one, you will see signs) has a short drive up a mountain with amazing views of the harbor. Otherwise, one thing you are going to enjoy is that route one is really set up for people on vacation, such that there will be signs directing you to all sorts of attractions and stores and so forth all along your way. There are places you can stop farther south in Maine -- Ogunquit, eg, has a very pretty beach -- but I like the midcoast and downeast more, so I don't have as many recommendations for the southern portion of the state. Have a great time! I love Maine.

I'll second all of the above and add the following:
I'm not sure which directions you have (either Maine Turnpike most of the way an option), but I'd suggest getting off the Turnpike in Brunswick and taking Route 1 up the coast. It is one of the prettiest rides and a lot of the good places to see are towns you'll be driving through. However, if you're returning to Boston on a Sunday, I'd check out the traffic reports and most likely get on the Turnpike in Bangor. Route 1 is only 2 lanes of traffic for a lot of it and certain areas can get very backed up as everyone heads home.
Wiscasset also has some great antique stores that you can walk around and see.
Moody's Diner in Warren is a classic diner and worth a stop for some great diner food! If you're into German food, there's Morse's Sauerkraut & German Deli in Warren that's a few miles off Route 1 but has a great selection of foods and a little restaurant.
I like Rockland to walk around as well - cute little village with some nice shops and good places to eat. You can also easily walk to Rockland Harbor Light - there's a rocky beach to to a little beach combing and you can walk out the breakwater to the lighthouse.
Our favorite place to eat in Camden is Cappy's Chowder House, but I don't think there's a bad restaurant in the area. The view from Mt. Battie in Camden Hills State Park is amazing! Definitely worth a stop if you have some time!
Belfast is on my list of places to visit - looks like a nice little town to walk around.
You can explore Ft. Knox and take a ride to the top of the new bridge over the Penobscot River (which is a mini version of the Zakim Bridge you'll see in Boston) in Prospect, Maine.
I love the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound - pick your own lobster and eat it overlooking Mt. Desert Island. Beautiful setting and fresh lobster!
I think the best advice is to allow yourself some time to explore when the mood hits you on the ride up. It's a lovely state with so many nice places to visit! Have a wonderful trip.
