I'm a very excited and proud sister! My brother lives in Florida and is on his 16th year in the US Navy. I planned to visit him this winter during to escape the frozen hell that is a Michigan winter. He asked me if I could plan my vacation to coincide with his final reenlistment ceremony. I said yes, I would be honored to do so!
I asked him what kind of outfit I would need to pack to wear to the ceremony. He wasn't much help with his answer, which was something like, "Well, obviously it is a military thing, so you shouldn't wear Daisy Dukes and a tank top, but you don't have to dress up too much, so just dress up a little bit." Ugh. Guys. So, who has been to one of these that can give me a *little* more help than that? haha I have a maxi dress that looks a lot like this picture. I also have a little black shrug that I could wear over it to dress it up just a bit. I wear it with platform sandals which you can't see anyway. Would this outfit (with the shrug) be acceptable, or is it too casual and I should go with something more dressy? For the record, I am not a dress up girl but I would wear whatever is appropriate to this kind of thing, if only I knew what that might be!

That dress will be very nice for the event. I usually wore slacks and a top. You won't need the shrug in Florida.

Thank you. I thought about the shrug to cover up my ugly arms, lol, and because it will be January in Florida and I know from talking to him it can be a bit cooler in the winter. I'm really excited and want him to be proud of me even if he doesn't know how I should dress.

Never been to one that was more than standard military uniform and civilians wore casual clothes (jeans).

Ask him which uniform HE is wearing.
If he is wearing an "ACU" then jeans and a favorite t shirt will be just fine. Super casual for you. If he is wearing his "B"s that is the military equivalent of business casual. "A"s is the same uniform with the addition of a jacket and tie (business wear)
Your dress choice will be appropriate for any of them. For the record, my ex did his re-enlistments in the equivalent of the ACU most of the time. The last one just happened to be in class B uniform because that was the uniform for the day.

Scratch that a bit... I see he is navy. Still, ask him what uniform he expects to be wearing. A navy wife can tell you what level of formality it will be. Some of the other military wives may be able to tell you too.

Thanks again for your help. As long as that dress will be appropriate for all of his uniforms, I will stick with that.

I think that the dress is fine. My rule of thumb is if you would be comfortable in the dress at church, it's good for military ceremonies.

Navy wife here, that dress will be perfect. You might want the shrug in case it is chilly in the part of FL you will be in. Here in NE FL it can get darn right frigid in January, but other parts maybe not.

How nice for your brother to have family there! The dress will be fine unless it's a blustery day. Then it might seem too summery. But that has nothing to do with the level of dressyness the dress has.
I've never worn jeans to a reinlistment, but I think the Air Force is more formal with that. Or maybe it's because my DH is the boss? I usually attend the reinlistment and retirement ceremonies in the office and often wear a nice dress or dress pants and a cardigan.
When it gets closer, you may want to check the location of the ceremony. Sometimes it's in the office, but often personnel have it at significant historical sites in the area. In Boston, the North Bridge in Concord where the "shot heard around the world" was fired was a popular spot. And DH did his last promotion ceremony on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial. Then you may need to plan for the elements.

Congrats to your brother. My dad was a 30-year Navy vet. My folks lived in Clearwater and I can remember it sleeting in January one year. Be prepared for anything!
