I have a BFF here and she is the sweetest, nicest, kindest person I know. She is the most accepting person I have ever met in my whole life. I am blessed to have her in my life and to call her a BFF.
Today she saw a child who has Down Syndrome and she and I were talking about her son's classmate who has Mongolism. My jaw dropped and I couldn't say anything but nod my head. I didn't want to say anything and just listened. I want to break it to her that that is not the correct term for someone with DS anymore. I just don't know how. The term might have been politically correct at one time (if it ever was) but I want to correct her politely and kindly but don't know what to say.
Can one of the moms in here who has a child with Down Syndrome please tell me how to say this the right way? Please tell me the right words to use?
Many thanks,

You just smile politely and say, "oh, no one uses that word any more! The proper term is Down Syndrome.". It doesn't have to be a huge deal.

Just explain to her that is an antiquated term and quite offensive and you know that in her heart she did not mean to offend.

I would have just said nicely it isn't called that anymore. I don't see it as a big deal to tell your friend she was using an antiquated term.

Ok I will bring it up with her the next time she uses it. It came up in conversation last night and as you can read from my post, I was a bit surprised.
Thank you for the advice!
