(Nathan For You fans will understand the confidence reference) So, I received a job offer this morning! Let me tell you the whole story so you can appreciate how crazy this is. I had an interview last week. I felt awesome, I looked awesome. I was SO prepared. My mom came over to watch the girls and she was so impressed with how calm and confident I was, she even asked me if I'd been drinking. Got there Ok, time to spare. Walked around downtown Toronto for a bit. Found my way to the interview room (and saw two of my old colleagues along the way! crazy!). I walked in. I was confident. I shook hands. I was confident. I KNEW I was fully prepared -- I'd studied and rehearsed this interview in my head for almost two weeks. Then, the ONLY questions they asked me were about my commute and really, really specific technical questions regarding the equipment I'd be running. I knew not ONE single answer. It was horrible. I looked, and felt like a complete idiot. I've honestly never felt so inadequately prepared for any type of academic exam/questions before in my entire life. I was actually pretty OK with the entire thing afterwards because I figured it just wasn't the job for me and the hiring manager mentioned that he'd put my resume in the top of the pile for another job I'd applied for -- but that THIS job really was the better job. Then, this morning, he called me. His very first question this morning was to ask how I felt I did in the interview and I was completely honest -- said what I did above. And, HE AGREED WITH ME! He told me he'd give me a D on my interview questions. But here's the craziest part.. they're offering me the job anyway. For the job I'd interviewed for! And all because I was enthusiastic, I had great soft skills, and my references spoke so highly of me! I sort of hesitated to post this all since I haven't actually signed anything yet, but I'm sort of also really excited and I've already told everyone I'm related to.

Fantastic! Congratulations. I agree, confidence shines through and can compensate for not knowing all the 'right answers'.

I am thrilled for you!
Attitude is everything - they obviously felt you have what it takes to learn what you'll need to learn - but the soft skills are impossible to teach!

That's wonderful Ashley. Big congratulations. Now don't post anything specific about it on Facebook though, as companies check there to see if people are posting negatives regarding their work environment.

That is such great news Ashley! When do you start? August 10th. Plenty of time to pass a police check, medical stuff, buy a new wardrobe, and completely freak out over my commute.

A good attitude/confidence goes a long way. You can learn a job but most people don't change their attitudes.
Congrats!

Congratulations that's wonderful news. I also think that some employers realize that interviews are stressful, and sometimes some of the best candidates for a job get a blank moment. But the rest of what they see is what they're looking for. I hope t turns out well for you and a good fit.

From my experience, there is often a bit of on the job learning and picking up the technical or "hard" skills. Soft skills and how you work with others are very important skills that aren't directly measured or written on a resume, but are often, if anything, more important (not just for hiring, but when it comes to layoff decisions). I'm glad they saw you for who you are in the interview and offered the job. Congrats!
