I'm unsure about switching to a front load or staying on top. Do you have any opinions to sway me? I mostly use the regular setting with an occasional delicate cycle. Most features will be wasted on me but I need large capacity. Brands you've loved? I can think of 432 things I'd rather buy

Speed queen. It's a top loading traditional, all mechanical. The only extra we sprung for was a second rinse button. I LOVE IT.

After all those years using front loaders at the laundromat I hate them. I love my top loader.

We replaced a 35 year old General Electric that finally died with a whirlpool Cabrio that I absolutely love. It's a top loader with a number of different settings and works very well. That GE however! They sure don't make them like that anymore. It was my husband's parents.

I don't know that there are any I can say I've loved but I will always, always have a top loader. I hate the front loading ones.

I just bought a Speed Queen top loader traditional, after having a top load HE LG machine (no agitator).
There is NO comparison. The traditional washing machine gets the clothes MUCH cleaner in a fraction of time. I hated that HE machine with a passion. Off balance ALL the time. All I had to have in it was a towel that was slightly different from the other towels and it would not finish the cycle.

My favorite washing machine ever was a Fisher & Paykel top loader HE. If/when my current front loader HE dies I will be going back to Fisher & Paykel.

This is the machine I have had for over ten years. I love it. My non-mechanically inclined hubby has learned how to do the couple of minor repairs it has needed. And that says A LOT. It's still going strong and we are a family of six.

I have had a Speen Queen top loader since the start of the year. Love it! I was not interested in a washing machine with no agitator, using minimal water, (DH has smelly clothes!), or have having to wipe down the door or leaving it open so it doesn't get smelly. I have enough stuff to do.

Another vote for Speed Queen. Warranty is 3x longer than major brands, no electronics (on their standard top loader), and it has far far more metal parts than any other home washer on the market. It won't look cute or sing you a song but you can plan on it lasting at least 15 years with some basic maintenance/repairs. Love ours, we have had it a year and a half now. It's basically the washer everyone had in the 80s and 90s that lasted forever until electronics and planned obsolescence became common.

I have a Samsung front loader and I hate it. It's about 5 years old now and when it dies, I will replace it with a top loader. It cleans fine and has a speed wash setting that I use almost every load, but as others have mentioned, I hate the upkeep of having to leave the door open and cleaning out the hair and gunk that builds up in the gasket around the door. It stinks--literally!!!

I had a front loader for 7 years. I inherited it from my mother. Hated it! I bought a top loader without an agitator. I love it! It was the lowest end model, but it got great reviews. Most people complained about how loud it is. If you're interested I can get off my butt and get the make and model.

Wow! I have a Maytag Bravos toploader which I totally love except it does get off balance SO easily (no agitator)...need to check out the speed queen!

Another vote for Speed Queen. There are a lot of fancier, loaded with 'bells and whistles' washing machines out there, but none can even come close to the performance and durability of a Speed Queen.

joining the chorus in support of the top loading speed queen. I got one a few months ago and just love it. it gets the clothes so much cleaner is quick and doesn't get unbalanced. my fisher and paykel was going unbalanced with every load and the keypad controls weren't working except for using permanent press. the repair guy said the parts are plastic and when you use the same wash cycle the plastic behind the keys breaks down and no longer work. the speed queen is mechanical not electrical and i read that they are going to have to change that by 2017.

I have a top loader and while I am not the biggest fan of HE washers (they take FOREVER) I LOVE not having an agitator-I like to wash my bedding a fair amount and not having to bring the big stuff to the laundrymat is a big bonus for me.

I cannot reach the bottom of a top loader. So I would have to get on a step stool to get things out. My sister and a friend both bought top loaders recently and they can't reach the bottom either. I have an LG front loader.

I barely clear 5' and have no problem touching the bottom of our top loader. I do have to get up on tip toes but rarely do I need to touch the very bottom of it anyway. Usually the clothes are sticking up a bit or stuck to the sides a little.
On the other hand, I have trouble sometimes getting stuff out of the very back of our front loading dryer.

With all the positive posts about Speed Queen I looked at their stacked units. All front loading. Most stacked washer and dryers have top loading washers with the dryer above. I would never get a front loading washer so guess I'll need to stick with brands that build units in the configuration I like.
