I think I need a paper planner. I've been using a notebook for a year+ so I have a pretty good idea of what I want/works for me.
This is my ideal planner, I think: A5 size (7" wide by 9" tall) binder refills/blank pages I can add myself.
I already have a monthly calendar template I've been using for a few years so I don't need any monthly overview pages. I don't need daily time slots/appointment times. I'm pretty sure I won't use weekly calendar pages. I'd like dividers.
I do a sort of less-structured bullet journal / daily record / planning / monthly calendar thing right now and just want a binder system with paper I can add and move around.
My questions: - What am I not thinking of? - Good sources for cute, durable A5 size planner binders that are UNDER $50? I was thinking of a Dokibook. --> Where can I buy blank inserts? I'd really love a variety of pages including blank, lined, grid, etc.
Thanks! Ashley.

I'm not sure where to get the actual planner under $50, so I'm not ignoring your Q - just don't know.
For the blank inserts, I would suggest that you make your own and take them to an office supply store to get laminated.
There are also lots of etsy stores that make custom dividers.

Thanks! For inserts, I meant blank paper pages, not something laminated.

If you like the look of a plum paper planner (which has a ton of options) you can order it unbound and not punched. Then piece together in a binder of your choosing. There is pretty much always a 10% off coupon floating around as well.

I will talk about paper planners all day long if you want to! I am officially a planner nerd. Complete with stickers and washi and all the other fun stuff. I actually use my planner too – I could not survive without it. For the record, I also use Google calendar on my phone. I just like writing things down and crossing things off. I have an A5 Filofax and an A5 KikkiK-- but both were between 75 and $100. There are several videos on YouTube about choosing a planner. They go through the different planners and the benefits of each I make my own inserts – that way I could customize them to exactly what I wanted/needed. But there are several good sellers on Etsy. Some you can print at home, others you can buy pre-printed. I know this is also a popular site: www.piaric.com/

I did look on Etsy for loose pages/refills/blank notebook paper but did not find a whole lot.

Pinterest has a lot of planner ideas. I created my own this year with a disc bound planner as a starter. I created my own pages that suited my needs and printed them on cheap cardstock from Michaels. So far it is working very well, and the most expensive thing I purchased was the hole punch.

I just don't want to commit that kind of money into something I'm not 100% I'm going to keep using or will work really well. I figure a less expensive one will work just as well and if I hate it / it's too big / wrong format I will have made a less expensive mistake. I spent the evening looking at blogs, videos, etc -- planner people are CRAZY! haha, just kidding. I am only barely familiar with paper planners as they started becoming popular in scrapbooking and the kit club I was with introduced their own line. It took me the entire night to figure out that I want an A5 size.

Since I haven't been able to find a printed teacher planner that meets my needs, I went looking for (and found) downloadable/printable planner pages. I can print/copy as many as I need, and only the ones I will use, and keep them in the pretty binder I bought. Dividers from the office supply aisle work just fine for me. Maybe something like that would work for you? Check out this site for an example. It appears to be free so not much investment to see if you like the concept.

I'm one of those crazy planner people I have the Filofax Malden and I love it but didn't start there. I wanted to make sure that the paper planner route was the way to go before I dropped that kind of $. I also have 2 planners made by chic sparrow. They are a midori type planner and the inserts are inexpensive and can easily be swapped out. Lots of etsy shops sell the inserts and there are many free printable ones out there. Ray Blake has a ton of freebees and he's a wealth of information. There are also plenty of Faux-dori's out there that are way less expensive than the leather versions. The only thing I'm not sure of though is if they come in the size that you are looking for. Good luck!

I was hoping to avoid printing/cutting/punching my own, especially since I really don't need customized lists or boxes. I really just want plain paper (with light patterning like ruled lines, grids, and some blank) so I can write. I may have to try printing.

ashley I have been looking at the Color Crush planners. They have a website, but only sell wholesale. I have found them for sale on etsy. From looking at the website, it looks like they only offer personal size. However, sellers on etsy such as Redd Robin Studios are offering pre-sales for A5 size coming out in September for around $55 with inserts or $45 for just the binder. I'm going to bite the bullet and order one. I just have to make a decision on the color. Color Crush Website

There certainly are tonnes of printables available out there -- both for free and purchase. I had really hoped to avoid printing my own. I just don't want one more thing to have to keep up with, yk? Totally terrified of how little time I'm going to have at home once I start working.

Love plum paper planners. The one I want for 2016 runs just over 50 with all the customization, but It actually runs Sept 2015-Dec 2016, as my previous plum paper will run out at the end of August. So I'm adding pieces to get it to work for me.

I carry it daily and the binder itself is still in excellent condition. I havent needed to add any pages of my own and always have extra space but I dont have kids so I could see how it could get filled up quickly. There are some really cute inserts it comes with and the snap on the front is strong

I must have gone through a ream of paper and a ton of ink and ended up with only a handful of usable papers (says a lot about my printing skills). The ink for my printer is expensive and it just wasn't worth the hassle - especially since the preprinted ones that I like are printed on quality paper, are neatly bound and are inexpensive. I do like looking at the inserts that Ray Blake has but just to get different ideas.

My favorite planners are the ones that zip closed, so that everything looks neat on the outside, even if I have a pud of loose pages inside.

Ashley-- have you looked at the Filofax Domino? It has an elastic band closure and is only $49. I'm considering getting the Aubergine polka dot one. I can attest to the quality of Filofax, and if you decide a paper planner is not for you, Filofaxes sell very well on the secondary market (they hold their value well).

That was one of the first ones I looked at last night while planner hunting, and I got so distracted by gold polka dots on other planners, I forgot about this one. Thanks! Also, it's good to know they can be bought/sold secondhand!

I use an A5 Filofax. They aren't under $50 but the weather lasts and lasts, so I splurged. I can't help you with finding one under $50 except to tell you to watch ebay, thrift stores or some facebook groups have buy/sell listings as part of their communities. I like buying my inserts from www.etsy.com/shop/KiddyQualia She has graph and lined paper in the A5 size. I've used her calendars, too, but they are really basic. If you're looking for something fancier similar to Erin Condren or Plum Paper, they won't meet your wants. The graph/lined paper is nice quality and she delivers quickly.

A navy would be beautiful, I went out of my comfort zone and got the coral/pink color.

Another Filofax fan here (I use the personal size). I buy/download from several different places, mainly from places I found on Pinterest. Most of my paper in my planner is pretty plain because I add washi tape, tabs, post-its, highlighters and markers
