We were in NC for a family reunion this weekend and visited Elon University and High Point University. What beautiful schools! We visited on a Sunday and there was no one on campus so we just walked around. We live in PA and my daughter knows a classmate going to each of the schools.
We were amazed at the beauty of High Point but really know nothing about it. Does anyone know about either of these schools? I think my 15 yr. old (junior) wants to go to High Point based on the campus alone! We will do research, but thought I would try here and see if anyone has first hand knowledge.

My nephew is going to be a junior at Elan this year. I know he likes it a lot. He is majoring in finance and economics.

I live in between both schools. Both schools are super expensive! My DH went to Elon when it was just Elon College. Here's what I'll say about Elon (my opinion) - most of the students I've encountered around town going to Elon (and I've had student teachers in my classroom from there) are spoiled kids who think they can do no wrong. Mommy and Daddy often pay for everything and many of them have a sense of entitlement. Again, just MY opinion.
I wish I could help with High Point. I've only heard good things by word of mouth but don't know anyone who's actually gone thwre.

Both are expensive.. and High Point focuses on giving the students great customer service, with all sorts of "perks" like valet parking, I think it was voted most "spoiled university".
It gets on lots of lists but I hear the education at HPU is only okay not exceptional.
The only criticism I have ever heard of Elon, is that it is expensive. I know some of the schools programs are considered exceptional. Particularly in the arts.

HPU is consistently very highly rated. It's also very very expensive. That said, they do give their students an above-average experience -- they have an on-campus ice cream truck! And it's a gorgeous campus as well.

If cost is a factor, what about UNCG? (Univ of North Carolina Greensboro). In the same general location but a state school and maybe cheaper?

my impression is that they are full of spoiled entitled kids.
i am sure any kids would love his/her time there with all the perks, but that really isn't the point of college, is it?
i wonder how their job placement is?

I've heard great things about HP. The students that I've known who live it there aren't the typical college sorority types they might have been the misfits or awkward kids in high school. These kids are the ones that would have typically resigned themselves to community college but felt right at home at HP. They also are kids that I would never have expected to be able to afford private school. I know they got great offers and help but don't know if they ended up with loans too.
I don't know much about Elin.

We really knew nothing about either school until my daughter's friend told her he was going to Elon. He looked at Elon and HP but thought the academics (for his major) were better at Elon. So for fun, we visited both. When we saw how beautiful HP was (Elon was too!) we were amazed! Beautiful fountains everywhere and neat statues of historical characters on the benches. I joked with my husband that I wonder how they can afford the professors because it was like they spent so much money on the beauty of the campus. Well, one girl from our area is going there, so we will be excited to hear her thoughts.

We live in the Pittsburgh, PA area, and would love to move south! When we visited NC State (our 17 yr. old was accepted there) in April, we all said that NC residents are fortunate to have such wonderful colleges in the Raleigh area!

There are a lot of Pittsburgh Steeler fans in the Charlotte NC if you can tell by car stickers! LOL We know many from the PghPA area who now live in or near Charlotte. Our area seems to have a lot of transplants from PA, NJ and NY mostly.

They are "prep" schools. As far as we have seen nothing special. We personally are going a simpler way. My junior will graduate at the end of her junior year...a whole year early. She has a 3.8 gpa, tons of volunteer and many awards. We know she could get into a university, but she has chosen to go to the local community college to get her 2 year degree. Smaller classes, way less money and then transfer to a University. In the end her degree will be from a University & have cost a fraction. I would do alot more research, NC has so many amazing schools. We are partial to UNCW or Appalachian.

Appalachian State, Davidson, Warren Wilson, UNC- Wilmington, Western Carolina, just to name a few... unfortunately the way our legislature is funding education I am not sure the state schools will be able to maintain the high standards!

We live in Raleigh. NC is lucky to have great universities. My DD is a grad of UNC-CH and DS went to App State. For the $$$ App is a bargain even for the out of state student.
I've known many who went to Elon. They loved it. They got a great education and subsequent great jobs. They are great kids and not entitled brats. I don't know much about High Point other than it has a pretty campus. Of the 2 I would pick Elon.
Another pretty campus NC school with a great reputation would be Wake Forest in Winston- Salem. DD went there for grad school.

My dd just graduated from Elon Law, and her SO graduated from a graduate program there. The undergrad university has a good reputation, and the campus was very pretty.
I think a couple of dd's friends in law school went to High Point, but I don't know anything about it.

I cried when my daughter didn't get in! We loved NC State when we went to Accepted Student visit day in April. That was my daughters 2nd favorite of the schools she got into.
We visited Wake Forest a couple years ago and loved it! We just got to spend a couple hours walking around campus one evening. We were on the way to our family reunion and ended up in Wake Forest so decided to walk around campus. What a beautiful "courtyard" area. The #5 student at my daughter's school is going to Wake Forest.

My daughter is only 12... but I want her to look at Elon... because they have a top notch musical theatre program... she might change her mind about what she wants to study between now and then.. but I highly doubt it. No one has mentioned..... Duke UNC is very competitive to get into even in state.

ktdoesntscrap... has your DD looked at UNCSA (school of the arts in Winston-Salem)? They have really cool summer arts camp and an amazing theater program. I think they have the High School for theater too (I know they have dance and music). DD#2 went to film camp between her jr and sr year of HS and fell in love. It's a small place but honestly they get so much hands on experience that they are generally ranked very high. I do highly recommend their summer camps -- while not cheap, they are very worth the experience!

@luvspaper We have... she really wants to go there for high school... I think in voice, you can attend your last two years of high school.
I think if I remember correctly she can go to on of the summer programs after 8th grade... she is heading into 7th. Definitely on our radar..
When I was looking for options last fall it did not come up in my searches it was only a fluke I found it. There is so much out there for kids to do.

We are blessed with great colleges/universities in NC! The cost (tuition/room/board/books) to attend both HPU & Elon are comparable to UNC for out-of-state students. However, both private universities have a higher admission rate (~60%) & are smaller compared to the first public university in the country (~30%); UNC is competitive for all students, regardless of residency! Best wishes to your daughters...

One thing to keep in mind is that the difficulty of getting accepted to universities is going to vary from year to year. I've known kids that got into UNC but not State. Kids that got into State but not UNCW. One kid that got into Harvard but not UNC!!!
Each year the admissions office is going to look for certain demographics and accept those students over others. A few of years ago it was easier to get into either NC State or Chapel Hill if you were a girl, but it flip - flopped two years later. I am often amazed at which of my students get accepted at these schools compared to who is wait-listed or flat-out rejected. Sometimes it doesn't make any sense to me!
I'm saying all of this because I don't want anyone to get discouraged if there is a school they really want to attend. Apply. If you don't get in that year, try again the next. So many of our competitive schools are accepting transfer students that weren't deemed worthy enough to accept as freshmen. @@

UNC has the option to transfer . If your GPA is good, you have completed your two year, then you can transfer in. There is a bit more to ot, but that is the jist. I'll never understand the reasoning behind paying for a basic degree at a University, instead of doing it at a community college. Maybe it's because community colleges are seen as lesser, but ours is amazing and growing each year. Wonderful teachers, small classes and you are not one in a class of 100.

My husband graduated from Wake Forest. It is a beautiful school! And it is small, I think around 4,000 undergrads. And it is part of the ACC, so there are plenty of sporting events to go to, if your kids like to watch sports.

So we don't even feel like we get a "discount" for being in-state compared to in-state if we lived in MD, VA, NC.
I can see why UNC is so competitive, it's a wonderful school! I got put on the waiting list for their law school (a long time ago!) and I called to see how close I was to getting in. They weren't able to say, but she told me that hardly anyone turns down UNC Law School, so not to expect to get in.
