One thing to keep in mind is that the difficulty of getting accepted to universities is going to vary from year to year. I've known kids that got into UNC but not State. Kids that got into State but not UNCW. One kid that got into Harvard but not UNC!!! Each year the admissions office is going to look for certain demographics and accept those students over others. A few of years ago it was easier to get into either NC State or Chapel Hill if you were a girl, but it flip - flopped two years later. I am often amazed at which of my students get accepted at these schools compared to who is wait-listed or flat-out rejected. Sometimes it doesn't make any sense to me! I'm saying all of this because I don't want anyone to get discouraged if there is a school they really want to attend. Apply. If you don't get in that year, try again the next. So many of our competitive schools are accepting transfer students that weren't deemed worthy enough to accept as freshmen. @@ Great advice!

HPU has a beautiful campus. I really don't know much about their academics.
Elon is a good school. I know a lot of attorneys that graduated from Elon Law and now have their own law firms and are pretty successful. Elon law is located behind the law firm I used to work at. It is in downtown Greensboro and their rate of growth is crazy. Elon is buying a lot of property downtown just for their law school.
Greensboro and North Carolina are beautiful places to live. I love it here.

We are blessed with great colleges/universities in NC! The cost (tuition/room/board/books) to attend both HPU & Elon are comparable to UNC for out-of-state students. However, both private universities have a higher admission rate (~60%) & are smaller compared to the first public university in the country (~30%); UNC is competitive for all students, regardless of residency! Best wishes to your daughters... My daughter got into Pitt, and it is the most expensive public school in the country for in-state. It's almost $19,000 tuition for in-state. So we don't even feel like we get a "discount" for being in-state compared to in-state if we lived in MD, VA, NC.
I can see why UNC is so competitive, it's a wonderful school! I got put on the waiting list for their law school (a long time ago!) and I called to see how close I was to getting in. They weren't able to say, but she told me that hardly anyone turns down UNC Law School, so not to expect to get in.
Wow - that is an unusually high in-state tuition compared to that at other flagship state schools, but I'm sure the relatively closer distance to home makes it palatable. As an UNC alumna (both undergrad & grad school), I appreciate your assessment & kind words! Of course, on 10/29, when UNC plays Pitt at Heinz Field, I have a feeling you may not be so gracious Hope your daughter has a wonderful college experience...

I am an alum of Salem College, another beautiful and historic campus and one of my good friends did her MBA at Wake Forest. I was interested in Guilford College as well but the program at Salem was stronger for what I needed at the time.
Now I realize everything I wrote really has nothing to do with your question, but I just wanted to chime in with more great NC school info.

I went to Pitt to law school, but I as a Univ. of Maryland alumni (and former member of the best conference around, ACC) I love every school in NC! My mom's family is from NC and we just love that state. I love the Tar Heels, and unless they are playing Maryland, I always pull for UNC. My husband's grandmother is from NC and has a stuffed Tar Heel that plays the UNC school song. We are big UNC fans in our family, even though none of us went there. My daughter has on her Carolina shirt now.

I told him about the courses I could take at Wake Forest and he told me to just go there instead. He said that all Salem was going to teach me was how to cook, clean and find a husband. @@ Can you tell I'm still a little bitter about it 30 years later? lol

I did not learn any of those things there! Plus, if you are actually husband-hunting, you will find more men at Wake Forest than at Salem! I can believe you are still bitter-Wake is a wonderful school but I am always surrounded by my Salem Sisters.
