Our cell phone contract will be up on August 1st. We have four phones on our plan with unlimited talk, text, and data. Even with two teens we average about 60 minutes of actual talk time a month. We are more of a data family totally and completely. (google hangouts, skype, and facebook messenger is our main form of communication) Average anywhere from 7-10gig total. But our cell coverage is spotty. We roam whenever we travel back to the midwest. Which is maybe two-three times a year for a week at a time.
We could switch to another provider that has better coverage and no roaming but with a data limit. In looking at a couple of different providers if we go with the 10 gig plans for four phones we will be paying about $30/month more.
So wwyd?

Apparently I don't know how to do a poll - please ignore the first option.

I'd stay with your current plan. What's the big deal of roaming for 2 wks a yr? Don't use your phones during that time. Good down time from them.

I would stay with unlimited data for a cheaper price. It is no big deal to me if I am roaming or not.

Do you have wifi at home? Then your kids aren't using data at home. I really like this app called onovo extend, it changed the settings on my phone and apps so I use a ton less data. I went from 3gig a month to .8 a month. It also told me which apps use the most data and I try my best not to use them when I'm not on wifi, instagram is one. I have a friend who won't email you photos unless she's connected to wifi.

Is that little bit of roaming worth $720 (over a two year contract) to you?
I'd stay put, personally.

I would, and did, switch to t-mobile from Verizon. The coverage is similar in the big cities we and the kids live in and for when we roam out of those areas, it's more than adequate. When we travel internationally it is better, way better, and way cheaper, then any of the other carriers. Internationally is free data and text, no need for an "international plan". We use hangouts for calls when we travel so that is perfect for us.
5 lines, unlimited talk and text, 2.5 GB EACH data at 4G LTE speeds then unlimited at 2G (yup), $140 plus taxes. You can get a 10GB plan but we've never needed it.
In your case being heavy data users I'd treat that unlimited data plan like it was gold, and especially as it's cheaper, wouldn't give it up.

When I think of spotty, I think of home coverage. Do you know that the other carrier works better where you go?

I'd stay with the unlimited plan.
