My DD has an iphone 5S and today she was cleaning the bathroom and one of the cats jumped onto the shelf behind the toilet and knocked her iphone into the toilet. She was able to retrieve it right away and put it in some rice. But of course, it won't turn on right now. Verizon said to leave it at least a day before trying to turn it back on. But seriously, does the rice trick actually work? Has anyone's iphone survived water?

Yep! Put it in a bowl full of rice overnight. It will absorb the water. Completely cover it in the rice. I've revived two phones this way. One took a dunk in the pool and the other was doused in red wine...

Good to know someone has had a favorable outcome. Verizon told me it would cost us $350 to replace it and i really don't want to have to do that.

Dds didn't after being caught in a viscous rain storm, but a friend of mines did when it was dumped in a sink of water taken right out, put in rice and not touched for 24 hours

I dropped mine in the hot tub. Grabbed it out right away and put it in rice. After about an hour, I was limited to texting, but at least that part worked. The phone (being able to hear and any other sounds) took about a day. There is hope! Good luck!

My DD just washed hers a couple weeks ago. We did days and days of rice, with no luck. If I plug the phone in, the apple logo comes on and then it goes into recovery mode. I have tried connecting it to itunes and restoring it, but it gets halfway through the process and itunes says the phone is not responding or can't be contacted or some such thing. Luckily she is due for an upgrade in October and we have an old 4s she can use in the meantime.

I read online about a guy that took his phone apart and dusted it with compressed air to get the water out. I am wondering if it's maybe worthwhile to take it to our phone repair place and see if they will take the phone apart and get the water out. Thinking of at least trying after work.

My last iPhone survived two baths. Lol one in the toilet and one in the tub. Rice worked both times.

Yes. I dropped it into the toilet as well, and the rice trick worked. White rice- three days.

Yes! The rice trick will work but you need to leave it at least 24 hours. When we had this happen we left it in rice for 3 days. Make sure it is fully submerged in the rice.

Yep...it just took a long time to take pictures clearly again because water got into the camera and made the lens hazy

The rice trick worked with my nephew after he was thrown into a pool with it in his pocket.

Dd took hers in the shower. She had it in a ziplock, but it wasn't fully sealed and moisture got in. We didn't try rice because she didn't tell me about it happening. Her phone still works but the battery life is nill. We took it to the Apple Store. They wouldn't replace the battery because if the other water damage. They would replace the phone for $269, which is a better deal than Verizon quoted you. So, you might try that option if rice doesn't work.
We didn't replace DD's phone because she's eligible for an upgrade in Jan. She's just hoping it hangs on until then.

Mine survived a swim in the toilet. I think the case it was in kept too much water from getting in the SIM card slot. I kept in rice for around 12 hours and then it was fine.

Just a few days ago a friend dropped her brand new iPhone 6 in the pool. After a day in rice the only thing that doesn't work is the Touch ID. So there is hope!
My DH washed his Samsung (older gen) and it never woke up. He was sad because he loved that phone.

Sadly no. DS's had a swim in the pool (with one of those expensive ?lifeproof cases on). He left it in rice forever. 2 days before he even tried to turn it on, & then he just let it sit. After about 3 weeks I finally declared it dead. I'm glad it's worked for others though, I'd definitely give it a go.

Mine did not survive a fall in the sink and living in rice for two days I'm glad to hear that rice has worked for some people!

I was thrown in a pool with my phone in hand. Put it in rice it did nothing. I then let it sit in my hot car outside for awhile and it started working again.

My iPhone 5S took a quick splash in the toilet (clean, thank goodness!) as well. I retrieved it immediately, took it out of the case, turned it off and placed it in rice for an entire 24 hour period. I would mix the rice up every so often. That was within a month of when I got my phone and it still works without any issues two years later. Good luck!!!

Stupid question, does it have to be "real" white rice or would instant rice work?
