I keep trying to give her the benefit of the doubt and come up with some reason this made sense.
I got nothing.

"Blood coming out of her wherever" is a quote that comes to mind.
I just...I don't..I can't...no. No. NO!

I'm so grossed out. Totally unsanitary.
I'm all for female empowerment but ew. I guarantee she plugged that shiz up before she got in her car or went home.
ETA- now I really don't like her. I was sitting here enjoying eating some Oreo Thins and now I've lost my appetite. Bitch.

I thought maybe her period started during the marathon and during her run she came up this this idea to make it a cause rather than an embarassing moment?!

Um, what?!!! According to the article she's played with Thievery Corporation. They are awesome. Put on a frigging benefit concert. I'd pay for that.

I guess her point is supposed to be that there are women all over the world who don't have access to sanitary supplies so they DO have to deal with stuff like bleeding while trying to also live their lives.

I think she was trying to taking menstruation out of the closet of shame. Ok great. But can't we just start talking about it instead of bleeding all over ourselves??

Good for her. Gross as hell. Not something I'm going to do. But her period didn't stop her and maybe it will help raise awareness for one person out there. Why slam her?

My first reaction was that it's disgusting. But after reading the article, it made me think about how menstruation is treated as something shameful, even taboo in some cultures, and it shouldn't be. The picture of her smiling in triumph with blood all over her pants is a powerful image. I applaud her.

In 2011 a report found only 12% of Indian women used sanitary pads. The linked article is about an Indian man who improved the lives of rural Indian women by making a machine they could use to make and sell their own pads. It changed lives, girls could continue education, improve their lot etc. Bathrooms are not common, remember the cases of girls and women being raped on their way to open fields to defacate. It is easy to forget toilets, bathrooms, privacy, etc are not afforded to every woman. The article linked is long but so worth a read www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-26260978

I think she is totally awesome and this is pretty much the only way you could get coverage of the cause. She put herself out there, knowing she would get criticism, be physically uncomfortable, have photos of her taken that aren't particularly flattering - to help the lives of less fortunate women.
Let's face it, it is hard enough to get coverage of women's issues anyway. And throw in menstruation? We might as well be back in the 50's where people wouldn't say the word cancer. Talking about menstruation is pretty taboo. And it impacts so so so many women and is intertwined with so many other health and sanitation issues.
I think this woman is amazing, I think what she did was brilliant, and she brought attention to a cause that otherwise wouldn't get attention. I want to be her friend... and I'd put a towel down in my car to give her a ride! She is a rockstar to me.

I think what she did was awesome and incredibly courageous.
We take it for granted, but tampons and pads are not available to all women and they cannot go in public, work, etc during their periods.
I applaud her!!!!!
ETA. AN and I were posting at the same time. I agree with her!

Instead of bleeding to show awareness, why didn't she just ask people to bring a donation of supplies to help the cause? And as a scrapper, I would take a picture again, without the mess showing. I would rather load a cart at the store than see that!!

The problem is most people aren't talking about third world countries or donating products to third world countries. They're talking about her. So if her cause was to raise awareness about third world countries and lack of feminine products there...as she claimed--she hasn't really succeeded.

I would rather load a cart at the store than see that!! Because that does not help lessen the shame associated with this natural event, nor does it shed light on the women who have no supplies and cannot leave their homes for several days each month. They are considered unclean, dirty, etc. and are shamed to avoid being in public. Some do manage with rags, I understand. Can you imagine your life without pads and tampons each month?

Instead of bleeding to show awareness, why didn't she just ask people to bring a donation of supplies to help the cause? Because until you actually see the picture, I think most people won't even think about what it's really like for women who don't have access to sanitary supplies. A cart full of boxes of tampons and pads isn't going to make the same point that this photo does.

I would rather load a cart at the store than see that!! If she just asked people to bring a donation of supplies - who would? Would we be talking about it? No, we wouldn't. How would she have gotten out that message to bring a donation of supplies? If she was a celebrity or something, she could have just promoted it on Twitter/Facebook/whatever as her cause, but she's a normal person. There is no way in hell she would have gotten media coverage without this "stunt." We're talking about that to start with -- and I guarantee you a lot of people had no idea or had never even thought about this being an issue. The google rates on looking up "third world menstruation" and other types of phrases is going to go through the roof. This is an AMAZING publicity stunt to bring attention to a cause, and us talking about her is directly leading to people learning about a cause they had no idea even existed. I feel like people have no idea how guerrilla marketing & PR works...
