Wear one. or end up in the ER getting your thumb stitched up. 'Nuff said. I'm a dork. Especially since I have a cut-proof glove, but didn't bother to put it on. <= idiot

Oh dear! I hope you heal quickly.
I have the glove, but hate to wear it. It's about 4 sizes too big for me. I love my mandoline and try to use the guard whenever I use it. But it's always a walk on the wild side.

Oh ow. I hope it heals quickly, those kind of injuries just make me cringe. Yeah. I'm a baby and wouldn't look at it while they were working on it. And it is even worse that it was at a military hospital and the guy treating me was in Navy Camo. And there is idiot coward me refusing to look at my bleeding thumb while he works on it... Sheesh!

Here is some advice I learned the first time I used a mandolin. 1. Turn on overhead lights. Or under cabinet lights. Even the outdoor lights. Light from the landing is not enough. 2. Read the instructions how to use said mandolin. 3. There is a plunger to put in food. Use that and not your hand especially your thumb. That may cause problems. 4. Throw darned thing away!

*shudders* That sounds painful! hope you heal quickly.
I just used a mandolin this weekend and was thinking I needed a glove that would keep me from getting sliced up. I didn't know there actually is such a thing! I'd appreciate someone posting a link to one they like. Thanks!

My daycare provider suffered a serious mandolin accident prepping snack during nap-time. The doorbell rang and she turned to look to see who it was while slicing. Thank goodness the kids weren't in the room and she had extra staff so she could leave.

My exH took our mandolin in the divorce (which was OK because he decided it was a necessity and bought it in the first place), and I haven't replaced it. It always made me nervous to use it.

I did that too. The cut wasn't the worst part in my opinion. The worst part was that my thumb throbbed for a week whenever it was below my heart level. I spent a week giving everyone the thumbs up sign! I didn't look either while they cleaned and stitched it up. And I didn't look when the stitches came out.
I was using the guard on mine and it jumped the track and well you know the rest...

Read the instructions how to use said mandolin. 3. There is a plunger to put in food. Use that and not your hand especially your thumb. That may cause problems. 4. Throw darned thing away! I love the beautiful even slices it makes though! My tomatoes are so nice and thin and even. And now my thumb is too! Ouch! How are you doing after your *shudder* eye shots? The swelling has finally gone down. It has helped a little. I was supposed to have radiation next, but decided not to go that route after the radiation oncologist told me that a small portion of my brain would also be irradiated as it was in the line of fire. The potential risks outweigh the potential benefits for that for me. *shudders* That sounds painful! hope you heal quickly. I'd appreciate someone posting a link to one they like. Thanks! Here's a link to the one I have but was too stupid to wear! It does work. I've sliced a couple of canning batches of cucumbers with it with no problem. I did that too. The cut wasn't the worst part in my opinion. The throbbing kept waking me up last night too. I'm sure it will be better tonight.

Yep... Learned the hard way about 3 weeks ago. The side of my thumb learned the lesson. I literally said, self use the guard and I didn't...... Duh.

I am afraid of our mandolin cutter, for the exact reason you posted. Glad you're okay!!
I only sliced off the very tip of my finger (the fingerprint area), and finally got it to stop bleeding by myself (after a couple hours). Of course, I wasn't using the thingamajig to hold the vegetable that you're supposed to, either... Still, I won't use the thing and it sits in the cabinet. A cut-proof glove would be a good idea.
(I just cut vegetables by hand, and I decided that nothing needs to be that thinly sliced.)

I am deathly afraid to even buy a mandolin because I've heard so many stories like yours ... Whenever they use them on cooking shows on TV I get super nervous ... on Chopped it is usually a disaster for someone The glove sounds like a cool idea though ... not that I plan to get a mandolin

Always wanted a mandolin. Always afraid of slicing my hand off. Never bought one.
Now I'm reconsidering. How do you care for the gloves? Do they get icky after a while?

I just hand wash it in the sink with water and a little dish soap and let it air dry. Easy peasy. I have absolutely no excuse for not wearing it, other than laziness.

Thanks link. I am the slowest prep chef in the world because of fear of cutting. Maybe I should get a pair to use with a paring knife. I am so lame.

My husband refuses to let me use one. He knows all too well how clumsy I am.

I had a friend who was a Pampered Chef rep who lost part of her thumb while demonstrating it--while reminding the customers to be very careful.

For $11.99 they certainly are worth the cost - if you wear them, unlike me! And I just wear one on my right hand, because that is the one I use to push the veggies across the mandoline. If I were chopping, I'd wear one on my left hand, since it would be in the line of knife chopping while holding the veggies.

Never heard of this, but I think if I bought it it'll be like my dishwashing gloves, sitting on the sink but I often only do a quick wash so I'm too lazy to put them on to protect my nails.

I'm going to give your glove a try. It comes in different sizes--which my original did not. I just toss mine in the wash with the other kitchen towels. But I air dry it, just in case it's meltable!

Aghh. I'm sorry to hear that you got hurt. That tool is my kitchen nightmare. I own a mandolin, but I barely use it because most of the times someone mentions a mandolin to me, it's followed by a story just like yours. I got the heebie-jeebies (no clue how that's spelled) just reading your thread title, but opened it against my better judgement. I had to stop reading the subsequent posts. I think I better head over to the "what are you overly paranoid" thread with this!

Ouch! I've only used mine once, and the plastic grip/shield worked well. Hope you're on the mend soon, and be careful!
