Another update: That painting, that got into the show? It just won a purchase award! (Last year there were only 4 purchase awards! 91 ppl in the show, 850 entries!). My painting will now go into the Permanent collection for "Cheap Joe's Art Stuff" which is a huge supply company! I did not gain signature status but I'm ok with that because I knew that the painting that was accepted was different from my other work. They said consistency was the issue... I actually agreed with them but I sent my best work I had available. Thank you all for always being so supportive! UPDATE: I was thinking about this post today and wanted to tell you guys.... I made it. I made it into this national show! I seriously almost had given up and almost didn't enter this year! This is almost like winning an Oscar in the watercolor world. I'm going for my signature status now (a big deal, means you're legit lol) Here is the painting that will be in the National Watercolor Society show this fall:
Thank you all for always being supportive of me! You've not only been good friends and fans, but great customers too! <3
Original post: I feel very much like most of my life is pretty much mirroring Sue Heck's. It seems like everything I do comes out as a good solid B. Maybe a B+ if I try REALLY HARD. I never ever feel "good enough". I entered my recent watercolor in a watercolor guild (national level). I feel it's the best thing I've created *EVER* in my life. Looked at last years exhibitors and felt like it could hold up. I was hopeful... and wrong. Didn't make it. I'm not blaming them, I'm not saying I was wrong or should be in it or that the judge was playing favorites or anything. I'm just mad that I did my absolute best, and once again, it wasn't good enough. I'm not asking anyone to tell me I'm great or stroke my ego. Really. I'm just wondering if anyone one else has the Sue Heck gene.

Wow I can't believe you didn't make it. I would really like to see what did as I believe you are an outstanding watercolorist.

Yep, my life to! And I am married to Axel! All that matters is that you feel you did your best. I quilt and I am not near as brave as you to enter my stuff. So kudos to you for putting yourself out there.

Well, shucks. But you are a WONDERFUL artist. I love your work. One of my friends where I live is also an artist and didn't make the most recent gallery showing. It has to be a difficult moment.

As the proud owner of one of your original watercolors, I've got to tell you that I LOVE your work. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I don't know what the judges were looking for, but if I were you, I wouldn't change a thing.

You have amazing talent...AMAZING! I would give my eye teeth (I'd say right arm, but then I couldn't paint) to have your skills. I'm like Sue Heck in that I'm really not good at anything. I often say I live a life of mediocrity.

I am sure that it is very difficult to be chosen --think of the job that those who have to chose the people! And think of this--if they choose 100 to represent --and you are ranked 101!!!!
It sucks and I get it!!!

Most of those juries are blind to new artists. So don't worry about it !

I think that brooches painting is beautiful .... but, hey, Sue-ish .... weren't you one of the scrapbook "elite" -- a HOF winner? LOL!!! Okay ... it was a few years ago, and maybe you aren't doing anything in that arena now, but you have felt positive reinforcement for creative endeavors.

Well, I would be happy to stroke your ego...wait, that sounds kind of weird, but you know what I mean, lol. I think you are extremely talented and those idiot judges just don't know what they are talking about.

I love Sue Heck! While things usually don't go her way, she has a great attitude & gets back up when she falls/hits a road block to try again.
Art to me is subjective. Everyone likes different things & some things appeal more to others. You not being selected is not necessarily a product of your work...maybe something connected with the Judge/s more.
Keep making work you love & growing your skills.

Lana, you are super talented. Art is so subjective. Case in point: we have an original from an artist from China named Zhang Bu. To some people, it looks stunning. To me it looks like a mess. He is a "famous" painter and had a big exhibition in town here when we bought the painting. Why I don't know.
Your abilities and successes are subjective, too. If I find a painting I really love (i.e. the broaches one) I would put that in my living room or bedroom. It appeals to me. To someone else, he/she might not get it at all. I love the work you do. It is interesting, has much detail to colour and shape and your mind is amazingly original.
I hate to say it, but there will be other contests. You are good enough to hopefully realize the judge(s) were wrong. Your work rocks. It just does.

I Sue Heck!! I'm sorry you are disappointed, but not making the cut does NOT mean your work is at B or B+ level at all. Several years ago I was on a judging panel at a school district level and it was heartbreakingly brutal. I seriously couldn't do it again the next year and it wasn't because I wanted to be nice and make everyone a winner, it was because the top level was so talented how do you cut anyone. A weird thing about anything creative is I have often gotten the most positive feedback and recognition for something I thought was OK and crickets for something I was bursting to share because it was so amazing. What is wrong with people?!

I'm kind of OK at a lot of things, and awesome at nothing...I didn't get into architecture school, teaching school, and wrote a bunch of short stories that are not good enough to publish and have been turned down for volunteer jobs (aren't schools always asking for volunteers? Apparently not the ones near me).
I think your paintings are great.

I think we all have a little Sue Heck inside of us. Well, except for those people we all know who are #blessed at all times and seem to never lose at anything. But I digress....
Anyway, ((hugs)). I understand feeling like what you're doing never seems to be good enough. Hang in there.

Well, since you don't want to hear how beautiful your brooch painting is... Maybe you're overlooking some of your strengths... "Everything you do comes out a solid B"... You might laugh, but a lot of us are envious of that kind of consistency... I feel like my life is highs or lows, and the thought of taking on something new brings lots of worry and uncertainty... I'd love to be more consistent and feel like whatever I took on would at least be okay... "You feel it's the best thing you've created *EVER* in your life..." You worked and pushed yourself and got better... You have a natural talent, but you also work really hard at it... You're tenacious... You entered a national contest - you're brave... You have strengths and are an A+ at things... A lot of beautiful qualities and strengths are under appreciated in today's society... When you think of the personal qualities you admire in others, you'll probably find you have those same qualities...

It is all subjective but you were at the National level. You already won just getting there. It hurts no matter what level, county fair or national. You did your best and you are good- national level- wow! Many of us never could get there, "Sue". And by the way Sue Heck rocks! as do you.

Lots of Masters weren't appreciated in their life time, most died in poverty and would probably turn in their graves if they knew what their paintings sell for now. Heck, J K Rowling's Harry Potter manuscript was rejected by 12 publishing houses before being accepted. "Experts" don't know everything.
Your talents are numerous, photography, painting and bathroom building if I remember correctly! Trust your abilities and if it's important to you keep trying.

Vince Flynn had to self publish his first book and went on to have many NY Times bestsellers.
If you believe it's your best work, then YAY! You've done something amazing. Personally, I love your work. Please keep sharing with us.

You never know what the judges were looking for this year. Sometimes it's a matter of wanting either variety in the subjects or curating a theme for the show. It's not necessarily about skill. You did your best and that's what counts.
I do feel a bit like a hypocrite though, because I feel like Sue most days myself. No matter how hard I try, I'm always the "Oh, yeah, you do exist!" girl. People are fine talking to me if they run into me, but they don't call me to check in and they certainly don't invite me to parties or to go out for lunch or shopping. It's been that way my whole life. Someday I wonder if I'll ever get my yearbook moment. (BTW, favorite television moment EVER.)

I'm sorry. At least you put yourself out there! Yes, me and my daughter have the Sue Heck gene. When I was in high school, I was chosen to be the Sterling Scholar recipient for business. It was a big state wide competition. I felt I had a chance being a state officer in a business organization and lots of other things. I didn't make it past the first round. My daughter is sooooo much like Sue Heck. Crazy clothes and everything! This year she's going to a small charter school. One of her biggest hopes was less bullying. She even said it was going to be the year of (her name). Turns out one of the mean girls is going to the new school as well. I really wish people didn't remember her.

I love your art! I'm sorry that your painting didn't make it. It is so hard to know why they chose something else instead of yours - I am sure your work is equal to the competition.

Well - living as Sue Heck - isn't too bad because she stays so positive and in the end, she ends up happy
I get what you are saying though. It is really disappointing and frustrating when you put everything you have into something and the results are not what you expected.
I'm sorry you were disappointed

It is frustrating when something doesn't work out. Been there, for sure. A lot. I've seen your work and you are good. It's hard to see it after a rejection, but in reality, you know you are. I read an article once, a long time ago, that talked about jurying in to a show, from a judge's perspective. She said so many that clearly have what it takes to make it into a show, often don't -not because they aren't as good as the ones who did, but they have to make cuts somewhere and sometimes it's just little things that push one artist ahead of another. For instance between two equal choices the quality of photos, or they went with the color they preferred, or a subject matter they preferred, or some little thing that had nothing to do with skill. They just had to make a choice. I also saw a documentary on the painter Michael Godard. One of the things that stuck with me was, that he took his paintings to a gallery and they said they would never sell. That people that come to buy art aren't looking for those types of paintings. He talked them into just showing them and he'd come pick them up in some short period of time that I can't remember. They were very sure it would be a waste of time, but when he came back they had all sold and they wanted more. That was the high point of the documentary for me. I hope you get out of feeling less than, and get to that point soon, where this was just a blip and you're feeling good about your talent and skill once again.
