I recently went to a management seminar and they used all kinds of acronyms. I didn't know what they were talking about until I figured out what the letters stood for. My brain does not automatically put words to the letters. When people use them on here (not aiming this at anyone in particular) I always wait for someone else to ask what the heck they are talking about. Do they bother anyone else?

I love them! but admittedly, when I don't know what they stand for, it's all just a jumble.

I work for the military and my husband is military. I'm so blind to them anymore. Even my kids talk acronyms fluently. It's ridiculous.

My DH uses them all the time (he's ex-military) and the company he works for uses them all the time. It used to really bother me, but now I just hold my hand up to make him pause and to remind him that not everyone understands all the acronyms he uses. I also will make my own up and throw them in a conversation. I love it when his face goes blank and he stares at me for a second trying to figure out what I'm talking about, lol.

I work for a municipal government so we use them all the time. I don't mind, but they have their place. My boss loves making them up for no reason. For example, we just received a grant from the federal government called "Western Diversification Canada 150 Fund". I agree that it is a mouthful. My boss dubbed it "Chips". HUH???
He said when he sees the name he thinks chips. Could we not say Canada 150? Or even 150? No one else on the planet is going to know what he is talking about. And if you have to take the time to explain it, then you should have just called it by its full name to start with!
Ok. You may have touched a nerve. Heeeee!

When I was teaching it was an alphabet soup - everything was an acronym. I almost fell out of my chair in the middle of a faculty meeting when we were told that our system was going to pilot the constructed response assessment test- that's right, it would make it the Constructed Response Assessment Pilot.... CRAP... we all knew it was CRAP, now it was just official!

We're a military family and I use them everyday. So they make sense to me here and most other places. When the kids write papers for school, they often put in acronyms and I tell them they have to write it out completely the first time.
When DH and I were first dating, he was at the Air Force Academy. I made him write out a cheat sheet for me. Now I see them like a word, rather than just a jumble of letters. Maybe a cheat sheet would help?

I think they're challenging. I feel like I'm sneaking into "the know" when I learn a new one. But sometimes I see one that is commonly meant to stand for something like Point of Sale, and my mind grabs a different meaning, Piece of Shit... for example. Then I'm "Not In The Know" any more...

It takes me a long time to catch onto the meaning, so I'm not a fan.

Detest them, especially in regards to medical.

I'm an engineer who does a lot of work for Defence. I can write whole emails in acronyms that even my manager doesn't understand but that the client does.
Some of it is for security and some of it is because our reports would be twice the length otherwise. Just like learning a new word, they quickly become part of your vocab and you don't have to translate the meaning. To the point where there are some that I know what they are physically, but don't know what the abbreviation stands for.
I do however feel that using them out of context to make other people feel out of the loop is crappy behaviour.

Most of the time, they don't bother me. It's when someone uses them to explain a medical condition, or something they are doing at work. If it's not an acronym that most people have heard in every day life, it helps if people will at least type the entire word/phase the first time they use it in the post. Then, they can use the acronym AFTER we know what they are talking about.

I sat through 9 hours of informational meetings today in the name of professional development, most of them jammed with acronyms. ESL, ELL, LEP, TADs, EVAAS, TEKS, IEP, IGP, SLC, BSC, STAAR, TELPAS, ARIA ... the list goes on. My brain is fried.

I don't mind them, use them, and enjoy figuring them out. Almost as much fun as trying to figure out what personalized license plates mean. my favorite was "Chatahallup" I saw recently around town. I

I work for the Canadian Federal Government and we also have an alphabet soup. They have their purpose but when I'm trying to figure out something about a division I don't work with often, it can be a real challenge.

If my brain wasn't so fried after a day a school, I could add another 10 to this list.

I love them but personalized license plates that I can't make sense of in 15 seconds are very annoying.

I use them daily in my field, but when I write reports of audits/reviews I always spell them out first, then use the acronym after.

I'm fine with acronyms until we get a new person and they want to know what it stands for....... I dunno, just accept it as the name and don't try to make it sensible!

DH was a civilian working for the DOD and they would make acronyms out of their acronyms. Craziness. It was hard to keep up with what was what.

I warn my kids they need to learn my work language because when I've lost my mind in the nursing home I'm going to want them --- insert acronym.
