My phone just rang so I answered it on the fly (in other words didn't look to see who was calling.) Him: Hello, Mrs. Joy, this is John from TSAir. We serviced your HVAC system a number of years ago and it's time for a tune-up. Me: No you didn't. Him: (starts to talk) Me: (interrupting him) You never serviced our unit. Him: Are you going to let me talk? Me: (now screaming into the phone) NO I'M NOT BECAUSE YOU'RE LYING. YOU'VE NEVER BEEN IN MY HOUSE BECAUSE WE'VE HAD THE SAME COMPANY SERVICE OUR UNIT SINCE WE MOVED IN. QUIT CALLING US. (Slamming down phone.) I'm amazed he stayed on the line as long as he did. ETA: Calls like this are what make me HBIC!!

Dictionary , That's funny that he checked and called to correct you, as if that would convince you to hire him! I had a telemarketer call to say our website wasn't performing the way that it should. I asked if he was calling to sell a service, and he said no. I asked why he was calling then, and he went back to noticing my website wasn't performing. I again asked if he was calling to sell me a product or service, and again he said no. I asked why he was calling then, if not to sell me something. He started in on the website performance, and that he could help. For free? I ask. Out of the goodness of your heart? I ask. Well, no... he finally fessed up to having a plan involving fees...

Wow what nerve! We renovated our home for 9 months last year into early this year. Somehow we got on a list somewhere and get between 5 - 10 calls a week with contractors wanting to work on our house. Makes me crazy. I love the ones who say *We're doing work in your neighborhood and wanted to know...* I know they are lying. The good contractors don't even have to advertise as all their business is referral.

I grabbed the phone without looking because it rang just as I was expecting an important phone call. A woman's voice says, with a laugh in it, "Boy, you sure are hard to get a hold of!" Given her words and tone (and the fact that people keep complaining that I am hard to reach), I foolishly assume it's one of my friends/family members and I'm not recognizing her voice because I'm dog tired and in pain at the moment, so I put on my faux chirpy voice and respond. Turns out its a telemarketer for some breast cancer charity who is informing me that they are sending me pledge cards. It's not bad enough to get telemarketing calls, but pretending to act like they know me? Bite me.

I received a call the other day. Guy said, 'I'm calling about the issues you've had with your Windows operating system.' I said ok and let him babble for a while before I told him that we don't have any Windows computers. He hung up very quickly.
Can't believe Dictionary's story of the guy following up on her husband's license!

Dumb telemarketers are the worst.
We had an inflatable bounce house rental business a few years ago. We closed the business over four years ago. Somehow Google has tied my name to the business (easily searchable I know) and found my phone number. I get calls weekly about the services they can provide for my service. For a while I just hung up. Then I decided to listen through the message and try to talk to somebody and tell them to put me on their do not call list. I did that several times. Finally the last call the guy prattled on and on about the FREE advertising he was going to give me. I explained that the business was closed and thanks for the call but please put us on the do not call list. He continues on and asks how can I possibly turn away FREE advertising? How will my business succeed without advertising? And it's FREE! I finally had to yell and say "I don't need FREE anything because I don't want customers! The business is CLOSED!" I haven't received any calls in several weeks.

I once signed up for some information on health insurance on line.
I ticked only contact me by email.
HA! They must have sold my number and called over 100 times THE FIRST DAY! I am not exaggerating. It was hell.
Each one was from a different number and area code. they would call constantly.
Finally I started responding in perfectly clear English.. I am sorry I don't understand English.. and then also in English do you speak.. insert language of the day.. Chinese, French whatever.
it took weeks but calls slowed down. Now I still get a call every 6 months or so. UGH

Some office supply salesman called our office today and told the office manager (who does the ordering of supplies, etc) that he'd like to talk to the "Man of the office" when she declined his services. She asked him to repeat himself and he said, "You know, your boss!" She hung up on him. Hello Mister, 1952 called and wants their sales pitch back!

Back in the day before cell phones, I moved into my very first apartment and had my new landline set up. That was the start of tons of telemarketing calls for "new homeowners". The most obnoxious one was for a roofing company. They left so many messages on my answering machine. One afternoon, I had had enough and decided to answer their call. I let the woman go on and on about her company's services. When she was done, I told her that it all sounded great, but she would need to contact the building owner since I couldn't afford an entire apartment complex's roof and would she like his number? I never received another call!

I get calls for a moving company. Our number is one off their number and they advertise their number with a word instead of the digits. I frequently call the homeowner back to tell them misdialed and give them the correct number. This has been going on for maybe 25 years.

I can't believe he'd call you and then ask if you were going to let him talk! Uh, no! You are under no obligation to listen to anything he has to say.

I used to have a number that was the same digits as the pizza joint, but the last two transposed. I would get calls for pizza....most mostly drunk people in the evenings.

Our most recent wrong number was someone who was convinced that this was his podiatrist. To the extent of leaving a message on my answerphone (which has my personal message on it) and then phoning back to complain that his podiatrist hadn't returned his call!

I can't figure out what the end game is with the HVAC and home improvement telemarketing calls. I get so many that I started scheduling appointments with them. I actually said I needed work done and wanted someone to come out and give me an estimate. I did this maybe 10-12 times with all different companies and no one ever showed up or followed up. I offered a credit card to several to pay for an estimate and they didn't seem to want it.
So what gives? What do they want? And fwiw, when my husband found out what I was doing he blew a gasket and made me promise never to do it again.

I have several stories, but my favourite is when I lived in a rented flat with a friend. We would get several calls each week from a double-glazing company. Telling them that we were tenants and had no control over the windows didn't seem to stop them calling back, and we didn't like to be rude. Having had plenty of time to think about it, finally I said actually I WAS interested in a conservatory (sunroom), and I gave them all sorts of details about what I wanted. We had an appointment for a salesman all booked and then I said "If I get stuck in traffic on my way home from work, just knock on the door of the downstairs flat." There was a silence as that sank in. Then they hung up. They never called back.
Snigger.

Lately I've been getting a lot of calls like this:
Him: Do you have single or double pane windows?
Me: Why do you want to know?
Him: We are not selling anything. Do you have single or double pane windows?
Me: Like I asked before, "Why do you want to know?"
Him: Maam, we are not in sales. That's not what we do. We are just a window company.
Me: so why do you want to know?
Him: Because single pane windows are less energy efficient and it will raise the cost of your energy bills. Do you have single pane or double pane windows?
Me: So you are just asking out of the goodness of your heart?
Him: Umm...Well, um...

When they start calling, I usually get 3 a day. Then I block them and then of course they have different numbers, so I have to do it again. But I do get peace for awhile. They have turned me off to donating. Same with our local fire dept- caught him looking in my windows one day because I would never answer the door- pissed me right off.

Not hanging up or taking no for an answer isn't 'dumb'. If telemarketers did that, they would be out of business. It is in pretty much every rule book that you keep selling until you are hung up on or the person tells you to take them off the list. Ifyou 'let go' of a customer first, you will be fired, and rightly so because you probably will not be successful at phone sales. I know how much people hate telemarketers because i put myself through college by being one. I have heard every insult and taken every abuse you can dream up. But I'm not dumb. I made good money selling (for a college student living on her own).
Keep in mind that the person on the other end of the phone is an actual person. And they are doing a real job and making real money, you know, the kind of ethic that were supposed to hold in esteem. They are probably trying to feed their kid or work their way through college or get their car running again.
I was once at a family party and someone told the woman i was talking to that i was a telemarketer. The woman looked me in the eyes and said "oh god, i hate you people. "...

I don't hold lying, misrepresentation, and calls so repeated that they amount to harassment as any kind of "ethic" I hold in esteem. If the people are legitimate telemarketers, they are using an autodialer that uses randomly selected numbers from a database. It's not likely the person calling has redialed or even knows the number they are calling. For the system we used, calling back would be impossible, and it is designed that way to avoid harassment. Again, these are just people, doing a job, trying to pay the bills. (and i'm referring to legal telemarketing, not scams).

OMG! I just had one of these calls this afternoon. My dh answered the phone and knew it was a telemarketing call. The guy told him that we were friends. I guess he was convincing enough my husband handed me the phone. I get on the phone and he tells me he's following up on an online survey I took for their car insurance. I.LOST.MY.MIND! I cussed at him (oops.... ), called him a liar, and forcefully hit the "off" button! (So not as satisfying as slamming the phone down!). Why? Why do they lie? I swear, I know it can't be easy to be a telemarketer, but man, they're just sneaky and rude about it sometimes!

I actually had a call this morning from someone looking for details of the car accident I had within the last three years. I pointed out I hadn't had any. While she was talking, she actually cut off the call. She called me back and asked if I had hung up on her! The same thing happened again, and she called a third time telling me it was very rude to hang up while she was speaking. I informed her that neither of the first two disconnects were my fault, but that the third one certainly was - and hung up!

Solar sales calls are my pet peeve right now. We get both the constant phone calls and the knock on the door. We have solar already. It is especially funny when I tell that to the guy at the door. Seriously, can you not look at the roof before you walk up the driveway and ring the doorbell? Dictionary I can't believe the guy called you back about your DH's license!!
