What is your favorite brand of hair color and why? If you have natural grey hair, does the color hold or does it start fading out right away? I am currently using Loreal Excellence and it does do a pretty good job. I have used Nice & Easy, but found that it starts fading quickly and many times the colors with gold or red in them have a brassy look. LE is working for me, but just wondering if there might be another brand that I might like better if I gave it a shot. Thanks in advance.

I use what you use. I tried some brand that was foamy, and didn't feel that I got the coverage like with the goopy Loreal product.
However, No matter what I use in the light brown/medium brown spectrum, the Loreal colors turn reddish after a few washings. It goes with my skin tones, but might not agree with all users. I don't know if that's a common Loreal issue or not.

I had your problem and just started using eSalon color last month! Highly recommend it for true color and for not fading.

I'm using Olio & I really like it. It covers my gray well, holds its color with only little fading. I don't like the applicator bottle though. I just use a bowl & brush like my stylist did. I've been to the eSalon website & have wanted to try them.

I use the same one you do with the highlighting kit. I've found it is the easiest and lasts longer than any other.

Garnier Nutrisse had been the best for us (both dd and myself). I do admit that I would mix colors and use a bowl and a brush as well. Much better results that way. We both do salon color now.

I used the L'Oreal with the highlighting kit for years. It was easy to use and I was happy with how long the color stayed. I do agree that it tended to turn reddish after a while.

I liked the first color I got, but wanted a bit more blonde for the summer. I went on and put in my request and they immediately updated my information for the next shipment. I received it this week and will be trying it this weekend. Their tools are great (I got the bowl and the brush to color) and the instructions are personalized just for you. So far, very impressed.

I had been using Colorsilk for a long time. Then they discontinued my color so I tried the next color number in the same family. We'll, it was fall and I was wearing a pumpkin on my head. I went to get a cut and let my stylist color my hair as it was that bad. I went a couple more times and had her color it. I wear very short hair and it was costing me $50-$60 every time, plus tip. I couldn't keep paying that, so the last time I went into Sally's Beauty Supply right after getting it colored and asked the lady working there if she could help me match it. The match she made was a bit darker red, but after about a week, I loved it. I find the color lasting better than any I've used. She matched me to Clairol Professional Soy 4Pkex liquicolor. On the package it says Deep Conditioning Gray Coverage.

I've used Ion (from Sally Beauty) for a few years, and most recently tried AGEbeautiful from there--which I think I'll keep using. Both have covered my VERY grey hair well without fading. That said, my grey is more like stark, eye-blinding white and the root growth is obvious after three weeks or so. That's not the dye's fault, that's just me.
Oh, and I have to add how much I hate, loathe, despise, and abhor dyeing my own hair. If it wasn't so expensive I'd get it done in a salon. I hate the mess. And dealing with glasses while dyeing because I'm so blind. And trying to get at my whole head? Aaggghhh! That said, I don't feel like my hair is more damaged because I dye it at home vs. at a salon.

Then I talked to my sylist one time about how even plain brown shades tended to turn reddish on me. She said some people's hair just has that tendency, and ANY warmish or even neutral tone will have that reddish effect on my hair. She said the solution was to choose an ash shade, because it counteracts that tendency. I now use a dark ash blonde shade, no reddish problems at all. Oh, and I use L'Oreal as well, the one that you mix in a bottle.

I heard the ash shades have a little more green in them, which makes sense-- brown is green and red mixed.

I've been using John Frieda recently, and am happy with it. The no-drip formula is nice.
I don't have *lots* of grey hair, just a small bit at my temples. It seems to cover it pretty well. I also think the colour holds up well. I usually colour it some sort of dark cherry red type colour, and I use shampoo for red-coloured hair and sometimes a colour-depositing conditioner.

That's so weird, because I've received the exact OPPOSITE advice from many hair dressers. My hair has red undertones, so when I colour it blonde, we have to avoid any ash-toned colours as it comes out BRASS in my hair.

She just held the samples up to my hair until she found one that matched the closest to what mine was a day or two after my stylist had colored it. I actually like the Sally's color better than my stylist after the first few washings as this color had a little more dimension to it.

I used to use one of the L'oreal ones -- I think it was Excellence. I liked that it came with a conditioner. However, I have stopped coloring totally since my grays actually now look like cool highlights. now to just get them grown out to a good length!

I am and have been using L'Oreal Excellence for many years. I use the medium brown color and my hair is well, medium brown. (see my avatar) I haven't changed brands because I am afraid that I will make my hair some weird funky color.
I do color about every 3 weeks just because I can't stand having any grow out visible.

L'Oreal Paris Feria Haircolor
Another negative vote for the foam hair color.

I've been using L'Oreal's Excellence Creme for a couple of years now. A few months ago, I tried another brand (John Freida, I think), and it was SO dark. Yikes... I like the L'Oreal because the cream doesn't drip at all, and the gray coverage is good. My hair grows really fast so I typically re-color every 4 weeks or so.

I use L'Oreal Preference Hair Color at home and I do use a medium brown ash shade. If I don't I get too much red. Not a good red-a fake looking red. It works out just right-at least according to my sister. She said my hair not looks exactly the same color it did before I went gray. Like it used to when I was younger.
I also hate doing it at home-I have long hair and it is a hassle, but it sure beats the cost at the salon! And I love the shine that it gives my hair. My hair grows fast! Like a weed. Sometimes I really wish it didn't.
I did try the L'Oreal Excellence Creme version once, but for me it was too difficult to get through my thick, now curly hair. The more fluid consistency of the Preference formula is much easier for me to apply. I just squirt it on in a line and then use my fingers to spread it in both directions, make another part and do it again and again.

PS Using a shampoo and conditioner without sulfates is key to keeping the color looking good longer. I've learned that through learning how to deal with this new curly hair. Thanks menopause!

L'Oreal Excellence and I pick a reddish shade on purpose. When I was having my hair colored/highlighted at the salon, she explained to me that some hair "lifts" red before it goes blonde - so if you're using a haircolor that lifts just a bit (any haircolor that contains peroxide) your hair may be going red regardless of the brand.
