Update 9/20:
My father James Grant Kelley Sr passed away this morning. He beat his cancer but his body couldn't recover from the infection he developed. He is no longer in any pain.
Thank you all for your love and support.
Original post:
He had his cancer surgery today. They removed his colon and part of his liver. The surgeon was able to reconnect so no ostomy bag! He has been in recovery for about an hour now and will be in a monitored bed for at least overnight. The doctor said he will probably be in the hospital for a week.
I'm going to hang around until I can see him and then go home. I'm exhausted, so much so that I fell in the bathroom overnight and have a nice shiner.
Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers!

I'm glad to hear the surgery went well. Go home and get some much deserved rest. You can't help your Dad if you're exhausted.

I did get some rest last night. Daddy's in some pain but they're about to switch up his meds to help. I just got back to TSICU from grabbing lunch and he's sitting in a chair! They're planning on moving him to the stepdown unit this afternoon.
My baby sister is coming tomorrow and my brother and uncle are coming into town Saturday so I'll get some relief. My stepmom is coming into town after her follow-up appointment (she had a procedure herself yesterday).

Latest update on my dad...
They just moved him to SIMU bed 29. They shooed me out while they got the transfer completed. Still in Hermann Pavilion. Next step probably in a day or two is a room , probably 9th floor Jones pavilion (same section where surgery was).

Hoo boy. The nurse just called. My dad pulled out his ng tube and was sitting straight up in bed and wanting to leave. She had me talk to him to calm him down. He was telling me he stopped there to pee and the next thing he knew they had stuck him in a bed and wouldn't let him go. I had to remind him he just had surgery. He said he still needed to get home. I said we can talk about that in the morning when I get there but to let the nurse take care of him tonight so he could get some rest. He seemed to be okay with that.
They changed up his pain meds this afternoon and put him on dilaudid via button. I'm sure that is what's doing it. The nurse is calling pain management. I had mentioned to her that he had pulled his covers off a couple of times this evening and when I asked what he was doing he said he was going to get up and change into his jammies. I was able to talk him out of that with a "trust me you don't want the top of your pj bottoms touching that incision right now."
I told the nurse if they have to restrain him to do so. She said a lap belt probably would do the trick. I said yep as soon as he tries to get up and that presses on his belly he won't be going anywhere.
Sigh. Guess I probably won't get much sleep tonight after all. If they call again I won't have much choice but to go back up there and make sure he doesn't freak out.

Sorry to hear that, post-operative confusion is unfortunately very common in elderly patients, a combination of different surrounds, anaesthetic drugs and painkillers. It usually gets worse at night, It can be very distressing for both the patient and the family, sometimes having a familiar face there helps, other times not. Usually it only lasts a few days and then they return to normal. Hopefully he'll have a few presses of his PCA and then just go to sleep for awhile and they won't need to call you again. I hope you'll be able to get some more sleep too.

I'm pretty sure it's the change from fentanyl to dilaudid - especially since I saw some disorientation today after the change (and told the nurses about the incidents). It just wasn't weird enough to snap that it could be the drugs.

My husband just came home yesterday after a week in the hospital for a colonoscopy gone bad. He ended up with a hole in his colon so his body cavity filled with gas and bacteria. He had 10" of colon removal and luckily they also were able to reconnect because we went in expecting an ostomy bag as well. He had a couple of large polyps and one that was removed left the hole. While in the hospital we learned that the other polyp was cancer, but they're confident they got it all. It was a long week. My husband also had a lot of crazy talk on the medications, a little still now that we're home and he's on oral meds. His Norco dose is twice the amount that I had for my joint replacements! Our biggest fear this week was his first BM. No one told us what to expect. It was mostly blood. So, don't be alarmed, but let the nurses know. BMs still aren't normal (not much solid food just yet), but there's no blood. Hopefully your dad is home within the week.
