I hear you! We need to buy a new car by early November and dh can't make up his mind on what we should get. I think we have decided and then the next day he comes home from work and says I changed my mind again I think we should go with x instead of y. I have a couple "requirements" and it will be a car that I may be driving a fair bit. but on the other hand there is a car that we are interested in but can't get till next March, and we will need a bigger car before then. so we really just can't make up our minds. I just want to make a decision and not have to think about it anymore. the last two cars we bought we knew exactly the car we wanted, just had to iron out the details. so this is a whole new experience for me.

I LOVE buying new cars. I usually go by myself, get the deal I want, and leave. I just got my newest car in March. Had a FUN day, and took myself to Biltmore House for lunch. Hubby and I are car people and have tons of fun with it. I know most don't enjoy it though. We are just weird. LOL!

I guess I should add that I would love *acquiring* a new car. But I hate the whole atmosphere of car sales people. Even worse are the used car sales people. ugh. This is why we only buy used cars from our local Honda dealer, the one we've dealt with for 25 years now.

I don't spend a lot of time comparison shopping or debating what I want. I find the car I want with the specs I want, go in with the price I want to pay in mind, get the deal and either sign it or don't. I've never really understood how it can be so hard for people. It's just a car! I have also never had bad sales people, so that could play a part.

The salesman knew exactly what I wanted and said that he had 3 customers wanting the same thing and couldn't find anything in the country. After 3 days of waiting for him to look, I found EXACTLY what I wanted an hour away. I called that dealer, made the deal on the phone, and went the next day to pay for it, and brought my baby home. The dealer here was SO shocked I found it on my own and only an hour away when he had others looking for the same thing. Doesn't take a scientist to look and find what you want on the internet these days. So, I guess my original salesman lost a deal because he didn't work fast enough or hard enough for me. I was SUPER pleased with what I did get. I guess he didn't take me seriously that I was there to buy what I wanted and would walk out with what I wanted. Guess he didn't understand that this 5 foot "tall" woman can be a firecracker.

I trade every 2 years and have been doing this for the last 23 years, so I have some experience at it. The main reason is because I have a drive to and from work that is extemely hard on a vehicle, so I buy new and trade before the warranty goes out. I only trade for what I can pay cash for the difference and don't ever have a car payment. With that being said I always make sure I am well prepared before I go to make the deal. I am very clear on how I deal and that I'm not going to sit in your dealership while you go "present my deal to the sales manager" while you are really discussing your upcoming tee time. I am always prepared to walk away. I don't care what you are giving me for my trade in and I don't care what you are selling me my new car for - I only want the final out the door price. I shop different dealerships, including online, and I tell them going in. It's amazing how well this works. I always get a better deal than most because I've done my homework and prepared to walk away.

And then the haggling around where they supposedly give you so much for your trade-in, but won't budge on the MSRP. If you tell them that you can get the same car for $5K below the MSRP at the dealership down the road, they then meet their price, but then offer you $5K less on the trade-in. It it is very annoying all in all for me. Especially I have the boys with me since it is summer.

If it is new car smell you want, you can buy it I hate new car shopping, but I have heard that if you belong to Costco, it is easy to get a good deal.

All they do is give you the name of the Costco approved salesperson at the Costco approved dealership of the car you are interested in. That person has to give you the no-haggle Costco price on the cars they have in stock. It is fine if you are not trading in, or buying a new model car (like a 2016 now). If if you want to buy a remaining 2015, you may be able to get a better deal on your own. And, if you have a trade-in, they can drop what they will offer you to make up for the money they lose on the Costco price.

How do you know what kind of car you want?
We talked about getting a specific car. I sat in it and felt like I was sitting in a fish bowl. So that ruled that one out.
Another car was super comfortable, but had the worst blind spot I have ever encountered in a car. So, nixed that one.
Part of the problem is, previously, we had a specific salesperson, at the Ford dealership, we liked and always purchased from. We have 5 Fords. But, I refuse to give Ford anymore business, because of the manner in which the company (Ford, not the dealership) has handled an issue with the last vehicle.
So we are rather lost as to what kind of vehicle to buy. Plus, we can't agree on a vehicle for anything.
Honestly, if someone told us they were buying us a vehicle, we could not pick one out.
Also, if you want to talk bad sales person...about two years ago, we looked at a car that I was rather obsessed with. I swear I sat in the driver's seat, looked at my son and told him I wanted it. The salesman was talking to my husband while this was going on. The guy refused to allow us to test drive the car. We had to agree to buy the vehicle first. This was not a high priced car, either. We walked. How are you supposed to make a decision without driving the vehicle? Past experience, driving a vehicle has told me the car was not for me.

We've always bought used cars, but even with that, whether private or dealer, there's always dicking around trying to figure out what price they'll take, making sure it includes all the features you want, etc etc. I saw one of these trucks on the road a few weeks ago and thought it was kind of interesting. Carvana - Skip the Dealership, Buy Online. It looks like basically you pick from their online inventory, they deliver it to you, and you have 7 days to test drive it, no questions asked if you want to return it. www.carvana.com/how-it-worksDefinitely an industry that could use an overhaul (and is protected by some seriously outdated and ridiculous laws), so I'm a fan.

PatterOh dear, that is a tough question. It's really different depending on the car we have to sell, the dealer, what happens, etc. But some things we always do is look up the Kelly Blue Book AND the Edmunds value of the car we are trading. We look at the high/low, and what we will reasonably accept for the trade. This is something I do not budge on unless they come down the appropriate amount on the sale of the new car. Also we know what we will accept for the price of a car. If it's not accepted, we walk. I did that when buying one of my daughter's cars last year. I told them what I would pay. They refused. I left. I then started talking to other dealerships in the state. One dealership was willing to give me my price, drive the car to my house, and take care of everything here instead of me going there. The dealer here kept continuing to call me, and I told him "Look, this is the offer I have from a dealer a couple of hours away. Break that offer, and I will buy the car from you." He talked to his manager, called me within 10 minutes, and made me a better offer. All of these dealers knew I was looking at several other dealers. They wanted the sale and were willing to do what it took for them to get the sale. We also never tell them what we are willing to pay--ever. Hope some of that helps. And MsKnit, we just always know what we want pretty much. We buy from specific manufacturers, and we know what we want within that manufacturer. We will do a lot of "build your own" on the website before we go to a dealer. Also, test driving is a big deciding factor for me because I am 5 feet "tall." I cannot reach the pedals in a lot of cars without being on top of the steering wheel. That bothers me tremendously so I have to fit comfortably, see comfortably, etc., before I ever consider a car. So while I might build one and love it with the options I have tried, it still may not work for me. Have fun looking. It's always fun to build them on the web!

My in-laws were looking to purchase a new vehicle. FIL was out and about and stopped at a dealership to take a look at a Nissan Murano. He drove it, liked it and then told the guy he was going to go get MIL to see what she thought. The sales manager was standing nearby and said "what, you're not allowed to make a decision without your wife?" FIL left and never went back. That guy cost the salesman a sale that day. I often wonder if he gave the manager a piece of his mind for it.

We've purchased 2 cars from Carmax and have no complaints. I love knowing exactly what price I'll be paying, no haggling and wondering if I got a good deal. This weekend, I looked online at the inventory of the location near my house, narrowed it down to 2 that I liked, went in this morning at 11AM and was home by 1PM with my new car.

We just bought a new truck. That particular truck was the ONLY one around. We searched 200 miles around us. So when we found it it's like dang. It's a high demand vehicle. This is the only one like it. now what. So you end up playing the whole "game" Then they give you laughable amount on the trade in. They came in 5000 less than we find the same truck selling at other dealers.
The whole process stinks. I swear every person that walks in a dealers door gets screwed.
Plus they listed our used truck for $1000 MORE than we paid THREE YEARS AGO. Augh! (and that's not how much we got in trade)

I really think the internet has made car buying a little less annoying. When I bought my minivan last year, I just looked online at various dealerships until I found exactly what I was looking for. I went there, test drove it, and then told them what price I wanted. They ended up giving me $1000 for my trade in and I didn't even expect that. But I think that if you don't know what kind of car you want, it is much harder because there's really so much to consider. I think knowing exactly what you want and what you are willing to pay for it makes it much easier to pin point your vehicle. And like others, I do hate the haggling. But I go in knowing how much I have to spend and I always buy used so I do Kelley Blue Book the car too so I know what is a fair price.

One of the best things about being a UAW employee or retiree is the no hassle new car buying. Doesn't matter where you go or who you deal with the Z plan is the same. Went to the dealership on Tues. and told the associate what we wanted. He found one and we had it on Thurs. We got a Ruby Red Ford Edge and I couldn't be happier. The smell of the leather is intoxicating. We had a 2007 Edge for 8 years and I wouldn't consider anything else. There's a $1000 rebate and 0% financing which is pretty hard to beat.

I do a lot of building on the websites, too, it's fun to dream! I guess I have a hard time knowing what constitutes a good deal, or how much I should expect them to come down from the MSRP. I know it's different for different brands, but I'm not sure my idea of a deal is realistic. Do you just go with your gut feeling, within your price parameters?

And we don't know what is going to work for us until we drive it. I want to be able to put our double Bob stroller in it. I need to have access to a car seat in the third row. I need something that handles well on steep windy roads. A lot of that you can't just tell by looking at a car online, you actually need to climb around in it and try it out. There are additional little things that I would like, but that aren't deal breakers. We are slowly going brand by brand to try different cars to see what might work for us. But we need to have a babysitter to watch the kids because I am not putting two car seats in every time we want to test drive something. Thankfully price isn't the final determining factor, but when we get there it will play in some.
