Tonight my son opened the box of tropical Popsicles...same thing I buy one or two boxes of each week...usually at walmart. He opened it and said the tops looked funny..and then tasted weird? My husband tried it and said it had almost a chemical taste to it? I took a pic of it to send....
Few weeks ago I bought lunch meat at the grocery store. They have a section where it is cut and weighed same day...opened it The next morning (ham) and you could smell it across the kitchen and it was brown! I emailed the store when I got to work to express my disappointment and heard nothing...my husband took it back that night and got fresh ham. Altho about 4 weeks later...a $15 gift card showed up in the mail!

Yes. I usually call the 1-800 number. Every company has offered free coupons for the same product. I called about a bug in my bagged salad and received a $5 coupon. Several times, I've been asked to email a picture or send it to them.
I called a battery company because I wanted to make sure I didn't have counterfeit batteries (Slickdeals.com has companies selling them all the time). They were counterfeit and to my surprise the battery company sent me a $15 coupon for batteries. It wasn't their fault I purchased fake batteries. Because of their outstanding customer service, I am now a lifetime customer.
If a company is unaware of problems with their products, how can they improve?

Yes, I will write to a company or return the item if it doesn't meet my expectations/is bad.

I do notify companies because how can they mend a problem if they don't know. I am not expecting anything in return as I know I can return the item to the store but will say that several of the companies have sent me coupons for replacement and/or discount coupons for the original item and other product they sell. I have always been met with a favorable reply and thank you. Things happen even under the best of circumstances. trying to help it not happen again and to other purchasers just seems to be the right thing to do.

Not always, but quite often I will. Like others said, they can't fix the problem if they don't know there is one.

Every once in a while I will buy something at Publix that isn't right. I just take it back to them and they refund the money or allow me to exchange the item. They are really good about that.
But over all, I am actually more inclined to contact a company to tell them about good service or products. I think people tend to hear WAY more negative than good so when I find something that I particularly like or appreciate I will let them know.

A few years ago I bought some expensive razors and they had a soap/lotion thing on the end and I broke out in a terrible rash. They weren't outrageous but around $15 for the package I bought. The package said 100% guarantee. I sent a copy of my receipt back with the product, it cost me around $5 to ship it back. I never did hear from them. By sending them back, I thought I would at least only be wasting the $5 for return shipping. Turns out those stupid razors cost me $20!

Last month I contacted Ziploc because several of the bags in my box of sandwich bags didn't zip. They sent me a coupon for a free box, plus some other coupons as well.

It depends on what it is, how big an issue is, and how often it has happened. If it's a product we bought once to try and we didn't like it anyway, I wouldn't say anything. If it is the tea bags that I use all the time and one tea bag is broken open, I wouldn't, but when it happens again, I would and did. The spicy mustard we use had a defective squeeze top (the hole was way too small) and I emailed to see if that was something new so I would know not to buy it again. Same thing with some bizarrely flat, burned Cheezits we bought- six boxes, all the same. In all of those cases, I received free product, even though in two cases I was only asking a question.

Oh, yes! I can't tell you how many times I've complained to Publix about roasts. They always refund my money. And I e-mail the Luigi's Ice company regularly because sometimes the cups are only about 2/3 full-they always send me coupons for 2 free boxes. And I send food back in restaurants!

I complained to a cat food company recently because there was a piece of paper stuck in the canned food in the can. They kind of gave me the run around, then sent me a couple coupons for products of theirs I don't even buy. I have occasionally complained or complimented other companies as well.

I do. And every time I've been sent coupons back for a replacement product. It's a win-win.

If something is bad I try to return it. A while back when SoftSoap seemed to discontinue the foaming soap refills I emailed customer service. I never heard back and it is their loss since we now use Method.

I just sent an email to our grocery store. I bought hot dog buns and instead of being cut down the middle they were like 90% top and 10% bottom. I even sent them a picture by the campfire.

Sometimes I will contact the company.
Mostly I just return the product to the store I bought it from. If I can exchange it, great. But if I can't, I get a refund.
I had to do that twice at Walgreen's this week alone.
The first thing was a three hole punch. The third hole had a jagged piece of metal that prevented it from punching through the paper. I was able to exchange that (and I tried the new punch directly after I purchased it, before I even left the store).
The second item was an umbrella that had a one inch hole in it. I had to get a refund because they didn't have another identical umbrella to make an even exchange with.

I usually tweet a company about good and bad experiences. If I have an excellent experience with a company or product, I tweet about them. Same thing about bad experiences. I always get a reply to thank me or let me know they heard me. I'm not looking for freebies, I just want to be heard.

I think in the couple instances I have bought bad products, I have just returned them to the grocery store for replacements. The only things I can think offhand were a box of popsicles that had obviously melted and refrozen - they were all gooey. And a carton of half and half that was off.

I have, I can remember that Huggies sent me coupons because one bag of wipes wad open and turning brown in a box, and Kraft sent me coupons because i had gotten cheese that was crushed, the plastic wrapped singles were all smooshed together with the plastic. Oh and LEGO has terrific customer service as well. I got a mangled duplo and they mailed me a new one and had me send in the bad one to improve quality control in the future. Oh and McDonald's, i got a happy meal for my son and the transformer had a metal wire hanging out of the weapon I wrote asking for a new weapon and said I'd send in the old one. They did send me an envelope to send in the detective one but instead of a new toy they sent me gift cards. I guess that was better than what i asked for but i bet my son would have preferred his transformer worked. .. Eta i have returned obviously bad food to the store, but in tee case of the Huggies i had bought them so long ago i had lost gee receipt, and the cheese was only partly ruined and it was for feeding my dog pills so i just used the ones that weren't smashed and called the 1800# about the rest
