We're looking for a room for my daughter who'll be going to SFAI (San Francisco Art Institute) in August. She won't be living in the dorm, she's transferring as a Jr and didn't want the dorm. (it's looking better now though.) She's 22, non-smoker, quiet, clean, no-drama artist. Anyone with a son/daughter in the city or West Oakland need a roommate? or if you talk to them this weekend, can you ask if any of their friends need a new roommate? Or does anyone have any been-there-done-that suggestions? (She's posting/answering ads on the school housing board, Craig's list, looking on a couple other roommate sites, etc.) We're looking from Daly City to south Berkeley. She's interviewed at quite a few rooms, but they're getting 50-70 responses in the first day and she hasn't been chosen yet. We went up yesterday and rode the Bart from Oakland to SF, found the correct bus to her school and rode to her school. The whole trip is about an hour. Totally do-able. The school is on Chestnut, very close to the crooked part of Lombard, so Russian Hill/Nob Hill/ North Beach area but really the transit is so good that anywhere would be great. (except Tenderloin.) You never know. We're trying everything we can think of... I'll bump this thread throughout the weekend so I can catch my bay-area peas! Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give. - we need it!

My brother and SIL live in her house in the city (half a mile from Glen Park BART). They have an extra bedroom and bath downstairs (street level) that they use as a guest room ... and it does get used, so I wouldn't normally think they'd want to rent it out. BUT they are moving to his house in Berkeley in August or shortly thereafter, and I assume they'll want to rent out the SF house.
So I'll send him your post and vouch for you (serial killer I met online?? JK) in case he really is looking for renters come August. Maybe he'd want to rent out the downstairs bed/bath separately from the rest of the house upstairs?

my advice..haunt craigslistings.. go out and show up...be persistant. there seems to be quite a few places around me...sfsu/city college/ingleside.. and be willing to pay up to $1000 for a share in apartment. park merced, etc.
my son in his 20's (fortunately does not live at home) says they get room mates on craigslist. and with the tight market, you have to be persistant. make a resume ..have references. I live about 1 mile from glen park bart...
my dd found a share apt in park merced..shared room for about $900 a month. 4 girls in 2 bedroom apt. the market is heating up now as students are looking..so jump fast on anything that may work. anywhere in sf..there will be access to the bus system. also check out the excelsior. and outer sunset. a separate apt would be $1500--2500. a dorm would be a good choice...
I am happy to help but the housing market is very very tough here.

That's funny about the serial killer - in my dd's craiglist ad she only had a few requirements from her prospective housemates and "that you don't kill me" was one of them!! lol

I've never been there before and we were pleasantly surprised. She didn't get the room, the roomies were all late 20-early30 and didn't want a "baby" (said in a sweet way, but rejection is rejection! )

Thank you! I appreciate the offer of an emergency contact. That was my biggest fear with my (then) 18 year old moved to San Diego on her own. I was able to handle most of her emergencies by just talking to her on the cell until AAA came. Now if she needed to be snatched from harm's way, I did have one niece that could have been there, it was very comforting. It was never necessary, but it put my mind at ease to know someone was a phone call away. Wow - New Zealand, how exciting!! (do they need a replacement roommate when she moves out)

I'll ask my sister. She lives in North Beach area and had someone who was looking for someone to sublet 1.5 bd, 1 ba stuyvesant town. Rent controlled. Not sure if it is still available or the duration of the sublet, or the cost but I just messaged her to see if they were still looking.

Disappointing news here ... my brother says they are putting the house on the market. Sorry about that. He says a friend's daughter (early 20s) just found a one-room sublet somewhere within a mile of their place.

If they want someone in there while it's on the market..... And, that's pretty encouraging about their friend's daughter. I've found a couple of sub-lets but haven't contacted any yet because they're all short term. Our first choice is something for at least this school year. If we get into August and still nothing I'll be standing in line for something short-term. In the absolute WORST-CASE, she can drive from here - Santa Cruz. We've been back and forth so many times in the last few weeks, I'm getting used to it. But with traffic some nights it takes us 2.5 hrs. Best commute has been 1.5 hrs.

My brother goes to UC Berkeley and lives right there. I just emailed him to see if he knows of anything.
I feel your pain as he has had a terrible time finding housing in the past.

housing in a well liked area like glen park sells often within a week. or two at most. I would try to find something in the next week or two...august is going to be crazy hard to find something. there is movement again at christmas time...so a sublet may be the way to go. as she gets to know people, she may also learn about openings. many are filled by referral...not online.

Thank you Nicole, I appreciate it! omg, stsf, I know, it will be tough if it gets much later! And the "referral" part, that's why I'm asking everyone I run into, irl or online! I know it's likely that's how she'll find a place!

My brother is going to ask around, but at this point he suggested Craigslist. Apparently it is very commonly done in the area.

She responds to all new ads on Craigslist. The people she has gotten responses from say the number of responses is overwelming. If the room is under $1,0000/month, they'll get 50-70 responses within a few hours.
