I don't watch videos and hardly use my phone for data at all but since getting the iPhone 6 plus my data usage jumped from 1.5 gb to over 8 GB per month. Of course Verizon says it's me but I'm not doing anything differently. My phone is using 1.3 GB a month JUST for system services and no one can help me figure out what those actually are. Haven't updated to 9 yet and not in any hurry to do so either. We had this same problem in June when my daughter went to a 6+. We found that it was because of a new setting that was included with the 6's. She used a ton of data one day at volleyball camp I got an alert that we were at 75%. I talked to her about it that night and said no more internet because we were only day 8 in our cycle and at 75%. She said she wasn't using internet. I tended to believe her because she was at an all day intensive volleyball camp. Anyway next day we are at 90% so now I was mad that she didn't listen. She said she wasn't on it all just took pictures and videos. I looked at the breakdown of usage and she was right. After some googling I found a lot of people had the same problem and it was because there was a default setting to upload pictures and videos to the cloud through LTE rather than waiting until you are connected to wifi. Go to settings-->Cellular-->Turn off photos. Hope that helps!

I don't have alerts set up and I rarely look at the teeny tiny icon at the top of my screen. I also never come close to my data usage, so I've never had a cause to set alerts up. I was at Chick-Fil-A the other day. I logged on to their free WIFI. After about half hour of surfing on my phone I just happened to notice my phone was on LTE, not WIFI. I verified when I first logged on that I had WIFI, but didn't keep checking. No idea how long I had been on LTE. Should we now have to pay attention to that at all times, or should we expect that if we logged on to WIFI and it's available, no matter the speed, that the phone shouldn't make a choice for us? While I think we should be responsible in some part, Apple should be responsible for letting us know the change as well. First, I will say that I strongly think *anyone* who is on a small limited plan (or who has a shared plan of any size) should have data alerts set up so they don't get caught by surprise. Carriers make it easy to do and to know where you are with your data usage, yet people still get these astonishing bills and think it's not their fault. Frankly, I have little sympathy for them. Smartphones - not just iPhones - have always switched between LTE and wifi has they are available. Apple has refined that now so people don't get stuck on wifi that's so slow it's basically unusable. Guess what most people blame that slowness on? Their phone, not the wifi. Of course the phone manufacturer wants to change that. I think the job of Apple (and any other smartphone manufacturer) is to provide the best possible hardware and software that will allow people to have the best possible mobile experience. It's our responsibility to manage our data usage according to the plan we've chosen. None of the smartphones I've had (3 different android phones) have switched. If I have wifi on, and there's a signal of any strength, it stays on wifi. If wifi is too slow for me I turn it off and then lte or whatever comes on.

I'm glad I read this. Today we bought a new phone and ipad air. My dh did some set up things on the air for our son and we left for the evening. We had a 75% usage message and then 90% while we were going to be out for about 5 hours.
The air doesn't have IOS9 though.

Thanks for the heads-up, and I'll make sure my kids know. DH and I are still grandfathered into an unlimited data plan from our first iPhone contract several years ago, so I rarely even think about data, but our teens only have a few gigs between them to use.

I am super late to this post and remembered seeing it but since we very seldom even got close to using all our data I did not follow the link.
Now I am super close this month for multiple reasons and see that my phone is using data on it's own overnight while in my house instead of the wifi.
The link no longer goes to anything to do with phones. Can someone help me out with how to tell my phone to always use wifi if available?
I talked to Verizon and their solution was simply to turn the cellular data button on and off if I was in wifi. Please tell me a more permanent solution.
TIA

TIA On an IPhone go to settings, cellular, and then scroll all the way to the bottom, there is the wifi assist button. Turn if off and it won't automatically switch from wifi to data if you are connected to wifi.

Thanks. I recently did the update and then noticed I was coming very close to my data limit. I do get notices from Vetizon, but assumed it was just me using more data, but couldn't really pinpoint why.

I think there has to be something new going on. DD has had major problems in the past few days going over. She's had to purchase more data four times this month. Yesterday she got the notice they added data to her account then 45 minutes later got another notice and she had been in her office on wi-fi the whole time and not using her phone. We spent over an hour at AT&T last night and they went through everything and couldn't find anything that wasn't turned off. Wifi assist was off, etc.

The link wouldn't work for me.
I am technology challenged. I do have wifi-assist turned off. In the settings, it shows the name of the wifi I am connected to. Is there something else I should be doing? Where and what is it, that I should be looking for. It it in the settings? Which category? Please help out the technology challenged. Thank you in advance!
Edited to add, I have iphone 5c.

This is for my iPhone and my iPad and my computer and my Kindle. I have not noticed any increase and have not gone over my 15 gigs. In fact, last month I watched a couple Netflix because I had six gigabytes left on the last day of service

When I click the link in the OP it takes me to something called DISTRACTIFY and I don't see anything about data usage. Can someone tell me what the magic button is please! LOL. Obviously I'm tech challenged in all ways!

I am sorry that I brought this old thread up. Fairly new not sure if I should have started a new one VS finding old one. However, I was still having trouble with data usage overnight even after turning off the wifi assist feature. I found this article very helpful. I hope this works. I have never done a link before and I am sure this is wrong but hope it gets you the page. Lots of hints. www.iphonehacks.com/2015/10/tips-to-reduce-high-data-usage-on-iphone-ios-9.html

I have satellite internet and that is our entire data cap for our house internet. Yah, needless to say, I keep a much closer eye on his data usage (or try to anyway). A huge part of the problem was his replacement (refurbished) phone from AT&T insurance didn't stay on the home Wifi but still, that's a ton of data for one person. This month, he's gone through 20 of our 30 which is still way overboard so I need to reign him in more especially with DD coming home this month to stay. I want to split the 30 evenly and try that. I have the AT&T app on my phone so just need to check on data more often. I did cut his off for a bit this month too. I shouldn't be surprised that his grades need a lot of improvement. He has Wifi at home so that means his 20 gigs of data is at school since he doesn't go many/any other places except a friend's house every now and then. Darn teens!

I hear ya! LOL I was "that mean Mom" who didn't get her kids smart phones until they went to college. Can you imagine! LOL My youngest just finished his first year at college. I didn't even get them a regular cell phone until they were 14. It wasn't a huge hardship. They had iTouch's and could get on the school wi-fi if they wanted. But, it is my very unpopular opinion that they do not need to have a cell phone on them at at school at all. My DD has graduated from college and her job requires zero cell phone usage. They can not even bring it in the building - it has to stay out in their cars, zero tolerance - if they have their phone one them - they are fired on the spot. She said it is actually very nice and she doesn't miss it at all now. I wonder how many people could do this now (not just young people)....

I guess if there was a true emergency, there must be a way to get ahold of the person through a central # (much like the "olden days"). Sometimes DH and I don't have our phones and we've commented that it was actually nice not to be tethered to them. It is a bad habit for many to always be checking them, playing on them. It's like a social crutch when out alone, etc. We are starting to look closer at our budget and may ask the kids to contribute to the bill (they are 16 and 19).

Thanks CeeScraps. WIFI assist! Got it. I still have an old 4S phone (sigh) but I'm going to make sure DD has that turned off on her 6.
