A couple of weeks ago I bought a pair of Franco Sarto shoes at Hudson's Bay. They were $185 and I paid full price for them (which irked me because they were running a $30 off sale on shoes, but Franco Sartos were excluded). The style was called something I can't remember, let's say Carly, according to the sticker on the box.
The following week I was shopping at Winner's with DH (a place like TJ Maxx in the US, that sells overstock/discounted/last year's designer wear), and he came over to tell me he found my exact same shoes there. For $100.
I bought them of course, with plans to return the first pair, but then I noticed that the pair from Winner's was called Haverly. I took them home and lined them up with the first pair and they were identical. Then I noticed that the inside of the shoes I bought from Hudson's Bay was marked with the name Haverly as well, despite the name on the box being different.
So now I feel like Hudson's Bay slapped a sticker with a new name on a box of last year's shoes, and tried to sell them for way more than they should have. Would this irk you, or should I go find a different battle to fight? I have already returned the shoes, but was thinking of shooting an email off to corporate to let them know I think it was deceitful.

You got your money back? If it were me I'd let it go and be a little more careful before I buy something from them again.

I'm not seeing any dishonesty or deceit TBH, mountain out of molehill on your part.

Many products come from the same factory, but get a different label...mattresses and appliances have this all the time. It makes it hard to comparison shop.
I don't think it's dishonest. I just wouldn't buy from Hudson Bay again.

Often different stores carry the same product with a different name on it.
I have not uncommonly found an item cheaper at a bargain store than I paid for it at a department store. They are not always last year's items - sometimes they are manufacturer remainder that goes to TJ Maxx or wherever.
IMO you are always taking a risk that the same item is available cheaper elsewhere. The shoes were worth $185 to you because they were ticketed that price and you paid it. I don't think you were deceived.

If you got your money back from Hudson's Bay, considered yourself lucky.
I highly doubt that you email, letter or tweet will be recognised by anyone. The HBC is undergoing so many remodels and re-branding of stuff, this would be considered so minor, not worth the time or money for someone to respond to your complaint. You have to take into consideration the cost of postage to reply to you, the $ in time spent by one or more people looking into the matter and the $ in time spent by one or more people writing and making a report of this. This is small potatoes to them.
For a higher end item, ($1,000.00 or more), they make take time to look into the matter.
That is how the business at HBC works.
Winners is a store that has prices on their items for sale considerable less than MSRP, so I would not be surprised to see that the price is lower. Winner gets over-runs, items that didn't sell in Regular Retail Stores and from other sources.

Franco Sarto's Haverly shoes are still listed at HBC for $185 so you paid the advertised price for that pair of shoes regardless what was on the box. I don't think HBC has done anything deceptive or dishonest. Shoes that are very popular will be available year to year without changes to the styling (I can still buy the exact pair of Merrill mocs that I bought 10 years ago).
The shoes may have been in the wrong box, but you paid their advertised price for the shoe you wanted.
You were lucky to find the same shoe at a better price at Winners.

Alright - thanks for the perspective. Yes, thankfully I did get the refund, and I will certainly be more hesitant to shop there in the future - but I will hold off on penning my diatribe of an email to them.

Was it a sticker that could have been switched by a customer or accidentally placed? I don't see anything nefarious on the part of HBC. You got your full refund and you have the shoes for a cheaper price. Let it go.

I suspect one of two things happened:
First, as others have suggested, last year's shoes were renamed and the 2014 model was sent to the discount store. No malfeasance involved, but happily you found a good deal at the second store.
Or, it was the same shoe, same name, but placed in the wrong box at one of the stores. So you really bought "Carly" but it was in "Harvey"'s box. An error, but doesn't seem to be fraud. I think this is unlikely, since shoes generally have a sticker on the bottom of the sample showing the name.
As long as you got your money back, I wouldn't worry about it. Although it might be good to check the discount store first next time, since they seem to have very good deals.

It is also possible that the pair at Winners was a flawed pair- not something obvious to you and I but obvious to the mfg.'s quality control.

If you paid 100$ at winners, then it is very likely that the MSRP was 185$.
Besides putting it in the wrong box, I'm not sure how you think the Bay was deceptive?

I don't get where the Bay was in the wrong on this one. The shoes retailed for $185 and that's what you paid regardless of what box they were in. As an interesting (to me, anyway) aside, your perceived value of the shoes when you bought them was $185. You were happy enough with that price, otherwise, you wouldn't have purchased them. Upon seeing the shoes at a lower price, they are instantly devalued in your (and our) eyes. The psychology of economics is strange.

I don't think you have any proof this was done on purpose and without proof I would never write letters/email/involve corporate, etc.

You were willing to spend the $185 in the first place, so you valued them at that price. So you found the same shoes at a competitor at a better price and you got a refund at the Bay. That's called bargain shopping. What's there really to complain about? You got what you wanted. Your narrative about this, that and the other thing is really irrelevant. I don't even get how you're coming to any perceived notion that they are deceiving you or anyone.

You have no way of knowing if it was intentional or not... Maybe the original box was damaged and they simply picked a box for a similar shoe to put them in... Maybe a customer put them in the wrong box... Who cares - you're buying the shoe not the box... And if you were concerned with what season the shoes were from, I'd think you'd go to his website and see what was current this season... Or shop directly from him/his store... Had to see what kind of shoe we were talking about...lol

You already returned them and got your money back? I'd let it go. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if someone took this year's shoes and put them in a box from last year and got whatever discount they had on last year's shoes. When clerks are checking the shoes, they're usually just checking to make sure they're the same size and you're getting one right and one left shoe. I don't think any of them are actually checking the style's name.

One other thought...our TK Maxx (in the UK) does sell items that are this year's, so perhaps the same is also true for yours?
Anyway, glad you got your money back. Those are nice boots!

Thanks for the feedback. Lots of interesting opinions here, particularly about the psychology of shopping. To provide a bit more background, the sticker with the different shoe name still had an illustration of the same shoe. So yes, I automatically jumped to the conclusion that 'someone', be it the store or the manufacturer, was trying to pass off last year's shoe as something new and different. And yes, it irked me to think that that shoe could have been on last year's sale rack, went unsold, and was then being offered up as fresh new (edit to add: full price) merchandise this year. You are right when you point out that it very well could have been a mistake or something less nefarious. I am also that person that always thinks whatever I paid for airfare is too high - I'm always certain that someone else on the plane got a better deal than I did. I will own it. So the point about my perceived value of the shoes dropping when I saw the lower price hit home!
