It's been a while since I've posted or started a thread......but has anyone made this album with just the tutorial/video? I can,t buy a core kit (too expensive)...think I can do this with my own stash. So anybody have some hints?...btw it is from kathy king, paper phenomenon..can be seen on youtube.

It looks doable without the kit to me...

The tutorial is $40 vs the package deal of $120; HUGE difference. I looked at Kathy Orta's online shop to see what's in the kit. Really, they're all things a scrapbooker would probably already have in her stash with the bonus of using colors and patterns you actually like. Kraf-Tex and Basic Grey magnets are affordable via Amazon (that's where I buy mine). There were times I didn't even use Kraft-Tex and just used regular duct tape to strengthen the spine and I've never had a problem. I don't even buy chipboard anymore because I just use boxes, it's the same thing and often thicker and more durable. Also, she uses Sookwang double-sided tape, which you can buy from Amazon as well. Very good stuff.
The one thing I notice with Kathy Orta's projects is if you want the exact end-product, you have to follow her measurements carefully. The flaps, pockets, envelopes are not a big deal, but the foundation pages' measurements are very important.
If you plan on using thicker embellishments, make sure to adjust your spine thickness and the gaps between your hinges from the get-go to give you sufficient allowance so your book remains relatively flat when closed. You will notice on the video that even without photos the book is already tight. If I were doing this, I would widen the spine.

thank you ,,esp for the part about widening the spine....I just printed out the tut,,,65 pages or so, and downloaded the vids look like I will be in business shortly many will say it is a very expensive project from the online aspects, but I do think that any artist really puts in a lot of work to these and will keep them in business!

Honestly, I think $40 for a class for that level of a project is a decent price. Studio Calico charges $29 for simple & basic classes. Also, Kathy has patented her Hidden Hinge Plus binding system which she invented so it's just fair that she monetizes her invention. I don't know if you'd had experience following her tutorials before, but I think she's an excellent teacher and very detailed, always making sure she explains thoroughly. Most of the books I've created the last 2 years have come from her YouTube channel.
Enjoy!

I am about to embark on this project. I felt the same way and just bought the tutorial. I have made a few other things from Paper Phenomenon. I made the Haunted House (adorable) and the travel suitcase album. I need to still decorate that one.

I just looked into it...may have to make one looks interesting.
So for those of you that have used Kathy's classes sounds like you like them? I have been looking at her classes and been on the fence about taking one. She has some great ideas!

Wow, have never seen from this artist before. Love the retrospect album. Think I will buy the tutorial for my birthday. Where do you find the large envelopes she has in her core kit?
