I am one proud wife. Some time ago, I received a phone call from Fred's warden. "I don't know what you'll think of this, but I'm putting his name in for Employee of the Year."
I replied, "Why don't you tell me why you chose him and I'll tell you what I think." If he was chosen just because he died I was going to have to say thank you but no thanks. Fred would not want, nor would I want for him, an award given out of sympathy.
The warden was very gracious to share his reasons for choosing Fred. And he submitted a beautiful writeup which truly represented my husband's work ethic. As well as treating inmates with respect, Fred was always looking for ways to make things better, more efficient, more cost effective.
To be able to sit down with our kids, and with Fred's parents and family, and share the news of this honor with them, was priceless.
Fred was known to say "work is not my life, work supports my life", but he appreciated this job that enabled him to provide for our family for the past 20 years and continues to provide for us even after his passing.
Tonight is the night of the award banquet. I am grateful to The warden and DOCS for honoring my husband for his dedication and hard work.
Today is "a day of gladness and feasting and a good day". Esther 9:19
Here is the letter he submitted on Fred's behalf:
Department of Corrections
2015 Correctional Officer of the Year
Sergeant Fred
Fred started with the department on February 21, 1995. Fred worked various positions throughout the department during his career. He always strived to maintain a high level of constant professionalism and always sought out additional knowledge wherever he was assigned. Fred’s level of respect and compassion for people, whether it was co-workers, the public or the incarcerated, was second to none. He became the department’s TAC (Terminal Agency Coordinator) officer in 2009. While in this position Fred was instrumental in implementing training, policies and ultimately, betterment of the department. He was always looking at ways to do the job better and more efficiently.
Fred was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on February 13, 2013. He continued with the TAC position and in July of 2013 he moved to our department’s Classification Unit. He was instrumental with the success of our newly restructured department. He continued to be an asset in all facets of the classification unit while continuing as the department’s TAC.
Fred became ill in January of 2015 which forced him to be out of work for an extended period of time. While out, Fred continued to assist the department in any way he could always, willing to answer TAC questions at any point thru emails, texts or phone calls.
Sgt. Fred passed on June 30, 2015. Fred’s dedication to his department was only rivaled by the dedication he showed to his family and church. He is survived by his wife Jennifer and their three children, J, L, and C. The ____ County Department of Corrections suffered a loss with the passing of Sgt. Fred that it will not soon recover from.
Due to the aforementioned reasons, it is with great honor that we select Sgt. Fred as the 2015 Correctional Officer of the Year for the _____ County Department of Corrections.
Me and the kids at the dinner. We had 2 full tables of family. We got a group pic and some other more professional photos which I will share when they are available.
The award, which they are having redone because the name of the county is spelled incorrectly.
