Holy hell, stop trying to make it "yours". It is not yours, it belongs to the entire country and the entire country should be able to sing along to it at the proper pitch and cadence!!! This post was "inspired" by that nightmare rendition given by Kristen Chenowith at the Cubs-Mets game. Hideous.
Improper performing of the national anthem is a huge pet peeve of mine. You want to know why no one sings along to it any more? Because they literally can't!

fans should be able to sing along. I have never once not been able to sing O Canada, but The Star Spangler Banner is a crap shoot AND sometimes they screw it up so bad it is barely recognizable.

I really wish they would leave the "professionals" out of it and let the attendees sing it. I will say that the Zac Brown Band sang it when Detroit hosted the Winter Classic a few years ago, and they sang it correctly.

O Canada is easy to sing. The highest note is probably the second note. I can hardly sing the Star Spangled Banner, the high top notes have been butchered so badly by so many different singers, it usually ends badly.

I totally agree. The national anthem is not yours to put your artistic spin on it. Sing it the way it was meant to be sung. Period.
It's such a bone of contention for me, it makes me crazy. American or Canadian.

There are plenty of people in the US who can sing our national anthem correctly, without embellishments, "high" notes and all. They're just not famous. Many of them are under the age of twelve.
Personally I blame cuts in music education for the fact that many Americans can't sing our national anthem. It's really not that hard, and the "high" notes aren't that high. But if no one asked you to sing it at the age of eight or so, before you started thinking that you couldn't possibly sing it, then your adult self is going to be unlikely to try it.
I've heard the anthem sung beautifully and correctly by children, teens and adults at various sporting events. It's only when they bring in some celebrity to do it that it gets all messed up.

Agreed.
Jake Schroder did (does?) a great job at the Avs game. He doesn't try to change it up.
The National Anthem isn't about the person singing it.
(I can't hit the high note, so I go down a bit on it or become a little more quiet.)

And, please don't muck up the words. It actually irritates me that they put the words up on the jumbo tron. I believe that we should know the damn words. For the record, I hate God Bless America with a passion. The words are stupid and it is not my national anthem. If we were going to pick a back up, I would have rathered a different patriotic song. God Bless America only showed back up because Congress couldn't sing the Star Spangle Banner after 9/11 and GBA doesn't have a lot of words to remember. |

Totally agree! In that instance (and many others for that matter) less usually equals enough. 100 different runs does not make it great.. just pretty annoying sounding!

DD sang the National Anthem at a major event one time, and so many random people were complimenting her afterwards for singing it normally.

I am pretty sure that my ds didn't adequately learn the National Anthem, America the Beautiful, or any other American standards when he was in elementary school. That chick who sang the Canadian anthem last night at the Jays/Royals game butchered it. But I LOVED the trumpet version of the American anthem!

Thank you!!! it is disheartening to hear people make it their own. I used to feel proud, but as I hear it sung different, and wrong it makes it feel less of our song. I mean wrong as in wrong, forgetting the lyrics.

Most people think that the Star Spangled Banner is their "American Idol/The Voice" Audition. Nope. It pretty much is a march. It should be sung with pace, gusto and vitality not like a dirge or a gospel song. I don't care if you can hit the notes if you sing it as above and I certainly don't want to hear a bazillion trills that would make a song diva swoon. Get on with it and don't make me want to plug my ears to make it stop. Most school music programs that provide singers are really guilty of this, because this is their "opportunity". No. This is your chance to be of community/public service. Save your "opportunity" for your demo tape. Last time we went to a USL game we played Montreal so had both US and Canadian anthems. My eldest goes to University near the border so he sang along to each. Oh the dirty looks we got.  |

I am such a patriotic sap.
Some of my favorite moments are times like at a Florida football game, ninety thousand people all standing, singing the National Anthem, hats off...it is such a wonderful thing to witness.
But I will admit, patriotic sap that I am I do not care for the warbly trilly versions. I like the traditional version, the ones that we all get to sing along with-even if we are singing poorly and out of tune. It is a thing that can bring a hugely disparate group together for a few moments in time.
(When I was coming up, we learned the National Anthem-sang it all the time in school. But then again, we also learned all the branches of the military's standard songs-probably because it was the end of and the aftermath of Vietnam.)
